The matter of Angela Rayner's house sale isn't going away.....

Angela Rayner is now to be investigated for breaking electoral law. It seems she has said that she married, and then lived in her ex council house for the next four years, while her husband lived in his nearby ex council house with her brother. Neighbours at her address said that her brother lived in her house alone, and that he referred to her as his landlady. This issue seems to be getting bigger by the day - surely electoral rolls show where people are registered to vote, and this should clarify the matter.

GSM Of course her life experience represents rather more of the population than exEtonian’s do. They are a tiny but powerful elite. Their comfortable lives, with few if any financial worries, have protected them from the experience of most ordinary people.
No, you will will not be alone, but that doesn’t mean you are right.

Anniebach I am disappointed in you.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 19:11:35

My goodness, the hatred of anyone who might be a bit better off and who respects some social standards is really coming out here. ‘Toffs’? ‘Elite’? So much hatred of anyone who has more than others. As ever.

Anniebach Sat 13-Apr-24 19:14:14

eazybee because i quoted Nye Bevan?

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 19:16:20

Maybe people are just sharing their own lives experiences

I’ve been judged for my accent

I am working class and have two degrees and plenty of qualifications. I had my children young and had a disabled child. Maybe Angela Rayner gives me something to aspire to, too 🤷‍♀️ We aren’t represented in parliament usually

Not hatred from me, but it would be difficult to ignore what many voters have said about the current MPs, especially around the referendum debate, eg Islington elite etc. Nobody could accuse Rayner of belonging to that set! grin

PS. I have a cut glass plummy accent, which covers up my lack of wealth wink.

PPS. I don't have tattoos or multiple piercings and don't wear tracksuits or pyjamas to go to Tesco. I guess I must be posh.

What is Toryism but organised spivvery? … No amount of cajolery can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party … So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.

I’ve seen no evidence of hatred of people who might be a bit better off etc? Many of the so called lefties on this forum are far from poverty stricken.
The dreadful comments about Angela’s accent, her pregnancy at 15, her ‘coarseness’ etc - how can this be ok yet genuine well founded complaints about the over privileged ‘elite’ have wrecked our public services

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 19:34:24

I don’t have tattoos either but my ears are pierced

Believe it or not, silverlining, I am not alone. If you think her life experience represents that of the majority of the population, heaven help us.

Not the majority, but a significant number. Many of those are people who don't think that toffs and the "elite" understand their lives or could represent them and sometimes don't bother to vote.

Someone once asked me what class my parents were. I replied working class. Rethinking it I said no, unemployed class..then changed it to unemployable class. It was only the luck of going to both a good primary school and then a good secondary school that resulted in me becoming lower middle class. That’s why I’m so passionate about education.

MissAdventure Sat 13-Apr-24 19:40:40

I don't believe class changes with money.

If that was fje case, presumably everyone would be happy for Rayner to be put in a higher class bracket than them.

RosiesMaw Sat 13-Apr-24 19:57:17

Class is a totally outdated construct.

Casdon Sat 13-Apr-24 19:58:55

But snobbery is still alive and kicking.

I can’t believe people think it’s ok to criticise Angela Rayners accent, good heavens, , don’t we have more than enough ex Etonian’s, with little lived experience of the lives of the majority of the population.

She is a woman who despite a poor start in life has succeeded in breaching that almost insurmountable barrier. She is to be applauded especially by other women.

I haven’t criticised her regional accent - (as I said clearly in my earlier post) it’s the spiteful, sneering way she speaks of others but then she probably knows no better.

I also compared her to Labour’s former Home Secretary Alan Johnson who worked hard to better himself so he could interact effectively with anyone from whatever walk of life. There are plenty of famous people, not just politicians, who have done the same without losing their regional accents.

Thank you.
I don't consider you thick either.

Yes Anniebach, that was a shameful remark for anyone to make and I am surprised at you for repeating it.

Agree MissA. I think she’s a seriously wealthy woman these days! I’m also speculating if that’s part of the reason she doesn’t want to publish her financial status.
😮
Doesn’t fuss me in the slightest but might upset some voters who like to identify with working class roots.
I admire her for making the most of her opportunities in life. I think she’s feisty and brave really.
Mind you - that’s easy if the wings beneath your wings are union backed.

She’s Labours ‘attack dog’. Probably coached by Alistair Campbell.

It is just an awful comment.

I am thinking back a few years to when Corbyn was on our screens and had his heart set on becoming PM and was coming out with things like “Labour are going to make kinder and more gentle politics”. He obviously didn’t send AR the memo.

I have not read a thing on here about AR that is disgraceful. People have given their honest opinions but they are not disgraceful.

I doubt it very much. I can't see that Blair's spin doctor and Rayner would have much in common. hmm

Labour just can't win, so it seems. There are those who accuse Labour of encouraging people not to have aspirations and putting the emphasis on support with benefits and statist "big brother". However, those who do have aspirations and reap the rewards from their hard work and aspirations are denigrated too. It's a tough one!
