The matter of Angela Rayner's house sale isn't going away.....

Angela Rayner is now to be investigated for breaking electoral law. It seems she has said that she married, and then lived in her ex council house for the next four years, while her husband lived in his nearby ex council house with her brother. Neighbours at her address said that her brother lived in her house alone, and that he referred to her as his landlady. This issue seems to be getting bigger by the day - surely electoral rolls show where people are registered to vote, and this should clarify the matter.

Thing is, MayBee, she hasn’t been slow to attack Conservatives, has she? If she has broken the law, or is lying, that’s serious. You know what she would be saying if the boot were on the other foot. I doubt she is the only person in her party who champions the poor and underprivileged.

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Apr-24 13:22:44

If, sadly, she does have to stand down (although if no laws are broken then she shouldn’t) will it just be from her position as deputy leader? In other words, will she remain as a Labour MP? I agree with MayBee70 AR is a remarkable woman💪🏻 and should not be lost by the Labour Party.

Have you seen the list of Tory MPs she called to resign😀😀

Enough said. She was proven right every single time!

Wyllow3 Sat 13-Apr-24 13:35:31

Or, Raynor consulted someone who was considered to know the legal situation but didn't properly.

I'm inclined to agree, MayBee. tho I'd add, some in the party.
Because every time "dirty tricks" are pulled, it reduces public belief in our system, ie "they're all the same".

Richard Holden (who as alluded to above, tried to get Beergate off the ground, is my son's MP. Holden went at it dirty and obsessively and all it did eventually lead to local chronicle headlines, "County Durham Tory MP Richard Holden accused of wasting police time over 'Beergate'"

Or, she didn’t consult anyone but says she did. Hence not even Starmer has seen the advice.

Agree Grandmabatty! This is the Tories and their client media up to their old tricks. Boris Johnson attends numerous parties during lockdown … but look, Keir Starmer has a beer and a curry not during lockdown. Nadhim Zahawi ‘comes to an arrangement with HRMC’ to pay £5million in unpaid taxes and penalties … but look, Angela Raynor may / may not owe £1k in tax from 10 years ago, before she was even an MP. William Wragg sends d* pics and discloses colleagues phone numbers to a stranger online, potentially causing a security risk … but look, AR may / may not have given an incorrect address. Why were journalists questioning AR’s neighbours anyway - smacks of a Tory / media witch hunt to me. They’re trying to create the create the narrative that ‘all politicians are as bad as each other’. Well, they’re not!

Nope, sorry, cannot agree.
All wrongdoing by politicians including lies and fraud needs looking at.This must include any politicians regardless of political party.

Exactly.

How can you possibly know what Starmer has, or hasn't seen?

Wyllow3 Sat 13-Apr-24 13:53:50

If the consultation was verbal only, no record.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:06:16

He has said on tv that he hasn’t seen the advice Maizie.

If only an oral opinion was given, why doesn’t she say that instead of refusing to give details? Any professional giving advice would record that advice preferably in a letter to the client, but certainly in a note on the client’s file.

Anniebach Sat 13-Apr-24 14:18:54

Why is she answerable to the press ?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:20:35

She is a politician. She is accountable.

LizzieDrip Sat 13-Apr-24 14:30:25

Obviously Zahawi didn’t consider himself accountable to anybody when he sent lawyers letters to Dan Neidle and some journalists threatening to sue them if they exposed his tax affairs.

Wyllow3 Sat 13-Apr-24 14:33:15

Whatever the original advice, it’s likely now that she is quite rightly being advised to not further comment by legal advisors until a great deal more is sorted out.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:33:37

Whether he considered himself accountable or not, he was held to account.

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 14:44:57

I don't know why people always bring up about her being a teen mum. Surely she has set a really good example to young Mums about what you can achieve even if you don;t do well at school and have a baby young. She aspired to more and that should be admired.

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 14:45:21

Not that being a Mum is something that should be looked down on anyway smile

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:45:51

I wish she had aspired to elocution lessons.

JaneJudge Sat 13-Apr-24 14:47:06

Having a regional accent is acceptable. I bet many Gransnetters have regional accents, myself included. It is nothing to be ashamed of, it is part of who we are or who we were.

eazybee Sat 13-Apr-24 14:48:22

Keir Starmer: 'She's not broken any rules, she's in fact taken legal and tax advice which has satisfied her and us and me about the position.' (March/April 2024)
Keir Starmer, asked again whether he had seen the tax advice given to Mrs. Rayner, admitted he hadn't: I don't need to see the legal advice, my team has seen it.' April 7th, 2024 ff.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:50:42

‘I don’t need to see the legal advice’. I beg to differ. Sometimes one can delegate too far.

growstuff Sat 13-Apr-24 14:51:10

Does the advice relate to the alleged electoral fraud or the alleged tax evasion? Does anybody actually know?

I agree that Rayner is accountable for aspects of her financial and electoral affairs, but I'd like to know what she has actually allegedly done - so many people already have their opinion - do they know for a fact what she's allegedly done?

Meanwhile, Rayner has said that she'll resign if she's found to be guilty. What else should she do? Be dragged naked behind a cart through the streets of Stockport?

For students of political life, this is a classic example of how to smear somebody.

I wish she had aspired to elocution lessons.

For goodness' sake! Unbelievable!

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 13-Apr-24 14:53:57

Can anyone other than someone there at the time ‘know what she has actually allegedly done’? We can only know what the allegations are.

Is she being charged with being a mother who sounds common? Wow! When did that find its way on to the statute books?

Nobody has mentioned her taste in shoes yet! hmm
