Humza Yusaf's resignation speech

What a joy it was to listen to, not for political reasons, but because of his command of language and oratorical skills.

His speech was measured with a beautifully chosen vocabulary and a measured delivery.

Nowadays when Boris Johnsons expostulations and arm waving is considered the epitome of political oratory. It was just so nice to hear a politician who really did have a command of language and delivery.

He may of course have been talking drivel, I wasn't really concenrating on what he said, but how he said it.

Maybe I should point out that Scotland has had just 3 FM's since the early 2000's

Thers have been six, paddyann

The first three First Ministers presumably don't count because they were Labour Party politicians.

😃

If it's accuracy you want best not to rely on paddyann who never comes back to retract inaccurate posts, whether using shouty capital letters or not.

Ah- the Scottish Whisky is a wonderful thing, especially if you are in a ranting mood !

Callistemon21 Wed 01-May-24 17:43:21

Well, at least he fell on his sword which is more than some leaders do who try to hang on by their finger-tips, scrabbling frantically until they have to be pushed.

OldFrill Wed 01-May-24 17:57:37

He was pushed as his potential deal with Alba wasn't allowed. If he hadn't gone he would not only have lost the no confidence vote (which was withdrawn once he stood down) but also the no confidence vote in the government and that would have caused an election. He was well and truly pushed on that sword, he had no way out. Nowadays the "hierarchy" of the Party is in control, not it's First Minister.

I respected that too I think it really counts. I hope a more stable situation can be reached before the GE with clear policy. From my personal POV I hope Scotland will stay in the UK but its not up to me, its up to Scottish citizens.

He had no choice he had placed himself in the most ridiculous mess imaginable. I am not sure what he thought was going to happen.

Well, he did but I can imagine other leaders trying to bluster their way out of it - and continuing to say how right they were for months afterwards.

Truss - still thinks everyone was out of step but her.

OldFrill Wed 01-May-24 19:17:35

He tried to bluster his way out if it by making a pact with Alba, but Sturgeon the SNP would never allow that.
He's not in any way politically astute, it's why she gave him the job, easily manipulated.

DamaskRose Wed 01-May-24 22:16:09

I agree wholeheartedly with all of OldFrills posts. He jumped before he was pushed. As did his predecessor. The only good thing about his speech (its content) was that it was better than the aforementioned predecessor’s. Unfortunately paddyann relies on the National and her own unreliable memory for “facts”.

Yikes! What a speech. Well modulated, erudite. And yet …
Another racist speech by Humza. ‘People like me’ and if I was to say “people like you” I would be accused of racism. Keen on his family now … don’t suppose he ever had an affair?
😁

Wow slander the man with no evidence!

Wyllow3 Thu 02-May-24 12:54:01

Slander is cheap and easy - but unwise. Poke around in any political POV background and its glass houses and throwing stones.

Urmstongran Thu 02-May-24 13:00:39

Humza Yousef was married first time and did have an affair as although his wife at the time converted to Muslim he said she “wasn’t Muslim enough”.

Google is your friend. I wasn’t casting aspersions. I’m no gossip.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 02-May-24 13:07:25

I have just listened to his white, white, white speech once more, just imagine if it had been a black, black, black speech…

Urmstongran Thu 02-May-24 13:11:21

It was vile wasn’t it? Such a racist rant.
Considering the high percentage of Scottish people who are WHITE it was really quite bizarre.

undines Thu 02-May-24 13:17:28

Cant stand him, fed up with hypocrisy and playing the 'race card' - or any of the other 'cards'. If I say too much more I would be banned, which says a lot for free speech (not!)

Namsnanny Thu 02-May-24 13:41:24

It does undines

I just dont understand why people who supported him (and obviously still do), are 'reluctant' to see it this way Gg13
They damage their own integrity imv.

Wyllow3 Thu 02-May-24 13:59:25

Are we talking about the same speech? I've just listened to the whole of his resignation speech, and don't recognise it in the posts above at all!

Humza Yusaf has beaten a tactical retreat, and so the vote of No Confidence in the Scottish Government failed by 58 votes to 70.
For those who have no interest in Scottish affairs, and the fate of the SNP, perhaps this will grab your attention, LABOUR voted with the TORIES...again.
But hey, it's a beautiful day. The sun is out, the bluebells are out. Perhaps by tonight, more Tories will be out?

The motion was put forward by the Scottish Labour so it would be expected they'd vote for it 😂

Maremia Thu 02-May-24 16:33:57

OldFrill, I would understand that if it was the first and only time. But it is not. In Scotland, Labour votes with Tories, time and time again. Check the record.

Have I missed the racist bit? He was just stating how far we have come over the last 50 years in terms of who leads us. If you closed your eyes and listened to this speech you would have no idea of his colour, age, race, religion. He just sounded quite professional and passionate to me. But then I take people on their actions and behaviours .

He made his white, white, white speech in June 2020
