Yet another defection by a Tory MP today. Natalie Elphick has obviously done this to make a point. She’s already said she’s standing down at the next GE but clearly wanted to cause a rumpus for the Tories. Her statement is scathing about Sunak. At this rate we won’t need a GE - all the Tory MPs will just voluntarily move over to the Labour seats
My enemy’s enemy is my friend
Mrs Elphicke is a bit of a loser who was given her seat by her local party because they felt sorry for her because her husband couldn't keep his fellow in his trousers and assaulted other women.
She should never have been selected .
There were no grounds other than pity for selecting her. She wasn't qualified in any way other than being an ex civil servant.
The Conservatives continue to be caught out by the old saying that Conservatives fall on sex scandals and Labour falls on money scandals (Angela?)
They continue to appoint candidates who aren't conservative but whose face fit with the left leaning One Nation Group - which is run by a porn addict.
Only you would describe the One Nation Group as left leaning Urmstongran. Moderate conservatism is nearer the mark.

I think the fact that neither of the defectors will be standing at the next GE was important in KS’s decision making here. Perhaps, if either had been intending to stand (particularly Elphick) there might have been a different outcome. As things stand, it’s all politicking! That said, if KS had turned them away, I dare say some would accuse him of being ‘holier than thou’. Tories are masters at playing the politics game; Labour has to do the same … whether we like it or not.
Necessary but not desirable. Not trustable.

"Labour falls on money scandals (Angela?)"
Had to laugh. the £1.500 compared with Conservative rip offs out of the public purse.
Elphicke isn’t left leaning😄😄.
Goodness the “lefty” “lefties” and “left leaning” comments on this site are actually hilarious atm!

They are quite different scenarios though. Dan Poulter is not a ‘difficult’ MP, he made the choice based on his own conscience, and hasn’t courted publicity. Had he been keen to continue as an MP presumably Labour would have accommodated him.
Yes I agree - Dan Poulter is a different case altogether.
Well I think the best comment on this has to be from Count Binface on Twitter/X. He said that Ms. Elphicke had attempted to defect to his party, but he prefers to take rubbish out, not bring it in. 🤣
I honestly believe that if an MP defects from one party to another, then there should automatically be a by-election. After all, the electorate is voting for a particular party at the ballot box.

Yes I saw that - brilliant - and can’t help but agree.

I agree with that, but not just for those who change party. I think those who are forced for whatever reason to leave their party and are therefore independents should also be subject to a by election. There are currently 17 of them, that can’t be right.
Yes, I agree on that score too, Casdon.

It's the GN equivalent of McCarthyism.

According to Wiki, she's done more than many MPs have:
"Elphicke was the author of the 2010 report Housing People; Financing Housing for the conservative think-tank Policy Exchange.[4] She led the Conservative Policy Forum when it was launched in 2011.[5] Elphicke worked for Stephenson Harwood, becoming a partner in their banking practice. She left in 2013 to found Million Homes, Million Lives, with Calum Mercer, a former finance director at Circle Housing.[6][7] However, this company was dissolved in 2016.[8] She was a non-executive director of the Student Loans Company, and chair of its Audit and Risk Committee. She was also an independent member of the Audit and Risk Committee at the Department for Education."
She doesn't sound like a loser.

I’m proposing that we form a LLL support group, this is my suggestion for our anthem. I guarantee you’ll like it all you LLLs out there.

I guess it’s politicking to further embarrass the Tories. She’s never going to be standing as a Labour candidate so making Sunak squirm is just a game.

I recall McCarthyism all too well (parents were strong socialists)
So I propose all the population be subject to:
"Are you, or anyone you know, has ever been a member or sympathiser of One Nation Conservatives, that dangerous crypto communist body"

Sad that only Jeff Lynne is still alive.
Bob Dylan is too I think/hope - they were just so brilliant.
With all these Conservative defections, Labour is in danger of making itself unelectable.
Yes, Bob Dylan is still with us.

'... and then there were none'!
I did say a while ago that with all the by-elections (plus now the defections) we won't need to bother with a General Election 😃
