Must say I really enjoyed his personal resignation letter, it’s nice to see a bit of eccentricity in politics sometimes!

Wasn't he the one who had a tax problem when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer?

Casdon Thu 09-May-24 08:29:58

Yes, I was purely talking about the content of his resignation letter though, because we rarely see signs of humour these days, and I miss it, perhaps I’m on my own there.

Just another in a long list of dishonest MP's. Tax fiddler and managed to wriggle out of paying the full amount when he got caught out. Came to 'an agreement'. It's who you know sometimes.

Oldbat1 Thu 09-May-24 11:59:55

I think many wealthy MPs see it as a hobby. He is yet another millionnaire who can now go off and make yet more money to add to his wealth.

Glorianny Thu 09-May-24 12:04:00

Rats?
I suppose saying you won't stand is better than just losing your seat in an election!

growstuff Thu 09-May-24 12:38:02

Ah well! What can one expect from the child of asylum seekers? hmm I'm sure he would have been absolutely fine in Rwanda.

Agreed Glorianny. It’s about saving face for many of these rich Tories now. People such as Zahawi don’t like to be on the losing side.

I suspect HMRC had difficulty proving the exact amount due so a settlement was reached, including payment of substantial penalties. It is not unusual that this happens. I am not aware of any evidence that less than the full amount of tax and penalties proven by HMRC to be due was paid. And btw, I can’t stand the man so have no axe to grind.

Oh dear, he'll have to pay his bill for heating his stables out of his own money now.. 😉

I believe at one point he was the richest MP. Hey ho, he can fly off to exotic places and ride his horses, lucky old him!

I started this post specifically because I thought his resignation letter was a refreshing change from the usual gushing blandness, I’ve realised I’m the only one though, so back to my box.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 09-May-24 17:16:17

I haven’t seen his resignation letter - I thought it would have been in your link. However I note from the link that he describes Shakespeare as his most famous constituent. Can one still be a constituent despite having been dead since 1616? Is this something the voter ID requirements are supposed to guard against?

Casdon Thu 09-May-24 17:31:50

It was on my link, to see it in full it was on the X link in the BBC article. I’m sure he didn’t literally mean Shakespeare was his constituent, it was a joke!

Namsnanny Thu 09-May-24 17:48:49

I thought it was quite subtle in it's self praise. Other than that, nothing special.
But then I haven't read many resignation letters tbh.

HousePlantQueen Thu 09-May-24 18:33:17

I shall have a read of it. I have to admit to being disappointed when yet another one announces he will not be standing for election, I am looking forward to the 'Portillo moments' but it looks as if it will not be quite as exciting as I hoped.

OldFrill Thu 09-May-24 19:34:41

Seems rather full of himself reminding us of all the positions he's held. Rather an obituary than a resignation.

He knows what it was like to have nothing.

There may be many.

Are there enough railways in the world? 😁
I do enjoy a Portillo railway journey.

I agree with you about his letter.
The opening sentiment was particularly lovely.
I hate it when these “pantomime villain” Torys show that they are actually human beings!

"Born in Iraq in 1967, he could have been sent to fight in the 1980s Iran-Iraq War but instead he and his parents fled Iraq and he grew up in the UK.
In his statement on X, Mr Zahawi said: "Every morning as I shave my head in the mirror, I have to pinch myself. How is it that a boy from Baghdad who came to these shores, fleeing persecution and unable to speak a word of English, was able to do as much as I have?"
And he seems unable to see any contradiction when he supports 'Stop the boats'...!! 😱

It is a mystery to me too... not very bright really.

I liked ‘every morning when I shaved my head’ 😊

Ah well. The Tory party are not a sinking ship. They are already sunk. They are a national humiliation. Economically inept, corrupt and out of touch. They have failed in every way and in all things. I want them consigned to History. They are all rats and shameless.

But guess what? they will get their index linked pensions, cushy directorships while we suffer at their decimation of the economy on a micro and macro level. Problem is - who is there as a viable alternative?

Reform possibly.
