Should Israel not compete in the European Song Contest?

I’ve seen tonight on the BBC news, that there are thousands of people marching and gathering in Malmo in Sweden, demanding that the Israeli entry to the song contest should not be allowed. The young girl who is representing Israel is only twenty years old, and she has been advised by the Israelis to stay in her hotel room all the time, except when she’s performing, for her own safety.
This disturbs me. Why is it acceptable to terrorise a young woman who is there merely to sing a song in a competition?

Yes I’m Jewish. I’ve stopped commenting on the issue of Gaza because the anti semitism on here sickens me and I don’t really want to engage with certain posters.

Russia invaded Ukraine for land grab.
Israel invaded Gaza in response to being attacked. There’s a big difference.

I know tickingbird

I was just trying to point out that both countries have been attacked by an outside aggressor, but are being treated totally differently.

‘When far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced Israel would seize 800 hectares of land in the West Bank last Friday, it did not come as a surprise to Hamza Zbiedat.

Though he is based in Ramallah, Zbiedat's family live in a small village close to the border between the West Bank and Jordan called Zubaydat, just north of the vast area now declared Israeli state land.

“Israel has fully controlled the Jordan Valley for the last 15 years at least,” says the advocacy officer for the Ma’an Development Center, a Palestinian civil society organisation. “The only thing left for Israel to do was to announce it.”

The Jordan Valley is a fertile strip of land that runs along the West Bank, east of the central highlands. Sparsely populated, it has many open and undeveloped areas – making it a precious reserve for the future development of the West Bank’
It seems that Israel have been taking land from the Palestinians for a long time. I don’t think that is right.

There is indeed a big difference tickingbird.

There are people in society who can’t or don’t want to acknowledge this.

As Louella says, it’s not a great time to be Jewish.

What kind of a society have we become? I’m ashamed of what is happening.

Not in my name.

Regardless of Israel’s actions there’s no excuse for anti semitism. I’m not responsible for the actions of another government of a country I don’t live in. For some strange reason nobody blames Muslims for the dreadful human rights abuses and evil actions of more than one Islamic country. Take your pick, there’s plenty of them to choose from; many, if not all, carrying out middle age atrocities year in year out. Are Muslims in the UK and elsewhere held to account for these evil regimes? No they aren’t so why are Jews the bad guys? It’s covert AS and the massacre on 7/10 has shone a light onto the hatred and prejudice that’s always been there.

It’s fact that protests began after the massacre and 3 weeks before Israel invaded Gaza. Figure that out.

I’ll leave you to it and won’t post on this anymore.

Jaberwok Fri 10-May-24 18:12:23

Totally agree with you tickingbird. How strange that only country in the Middle East that is safe for anyone other than heterosexuals is Israel. Women's rights? Look again to Israel, some countries are positively medieval in their attitude. It is ironic to see some marchers giving their allegiance to people, given the chance, would actually kill them!! Does anyone think this is actually understood??!!

maddyone Fri 10-May-24 18:19:07

But at least know that I and others agree with you tickingbird and that we feel for the situation you are caught up in that is not of your making.
The people responsible for all of this are the murderous Hamas.

Jaberwok and Tickingbird both express most eloquently how I feel. I'll leave it at that.

Maremia Fri 10-May-24 19:34:18

Did someone say 'land grab'? Check out any map of Israel in the 1950s, and compare it with a map from today. Notice how much land then was Palestinian territory, and how much is Palestinian now. I would suggest that is an example of 'land grab'.

Maremia Fri 10-May-24 19:37:33

And again we have the conflation of 'anti Netanyahu' and 'anti semitic'.
For clarity's sake, who on this thread supports Netanyahu, and who supports Hamas?
I will start the ball rolling, I support/agree with neither.

This.

I'm horrified at how much hiding in plain sight anti Semitism there is here.

Same here. Even Biden seems to be trying to rein Netanyahu in with no success.

No we don't if you have read some of the threads over the last few months.
There have been many deleted posts.

I see you’ve been deleted tickingbird. Interesting isn’t it - keep posting

Callistemon21 Sat 11-May-24 09:45:29

Keep posting tickingbird

I can't remember what your post said and whether it broke guidelines but someone's obviously touchy.

However, it is important that views can be expressed, debate is not stifled as, if we start to go down that route, it is very dangerous.

Shelmiss Sat 11-May-24 10:09:50

I’m Jewish. I’ve just heard that there has been a nice (not) little pro Palestine tent village erected on the Uni campus which will be lovely for me to see when I go on Wednesday.

I haven’t watched the Eurovision in years. I will be watching tonight.

maddyone Sat 11-May-24 10:44:53

I can’t imagine why tickingbird has been deleted. I didn’t think she’d said anything wrong.

maddyone Sat 11-May-24 10:46:42

Shelmiss please know that we're not all like that and we care about how our Jewish citizens are feeling at this difficult time for them flowers

Glorianny Sat 11-May-24 10:57:23

I don't know why tickingbird was deleted I don't agree with any one being deleted.
I do find this repeated and false accusation that all support for Palestine is antisemitic highly offensive. When it isn't actually being stated it is being insinuated.

I'm sorry Shelmiss finds the pro-Palestinian support camps intimidating. I would simply ask why?
The majority of those involved would fully support her and condemn any antisemitism. They are not people who support any form of oppression or discrimination. Which is why they are there. There may even be Jews amongst the demonstrators, because many of them oppose the actions of Israel.

Callistemon21 Sat 11-May-24 11:05:46

I do find this repeated and false accusation that all support for Palestine is antisemitic highly offensive. When it isn't actually being stated it is being insinuated.

That is totally untrue.

I doubt there is anyone who does not feel compassion for the Palestinian people, especially the women and children and wish to see an end to this conflict and a resolution.

However, at the moment, everything seems to be affected by this and by protestors who just want to disrupt everything.

maddyone Sat 11-May-24 11:34:15

Sadly the evidence recently appears to show that more and more the pro Palestinian protests are becoming more and more antisemitic. Jewish students in America are hassled and bullied if they try to get to their classes, and we seem to be following that example here in the UK at Oxford and Cambridge, where a news report I saw showed a reporter being jeered at and hassled because he asked the protesters about Jewish students. The marchers show antisemitism on their placards, including things such as Hitler was right. A man carrying a placard that said Hamas is terrorist was arrested a few weeks ago. The marches take place almost every week either in London and also elsewhere, in other cities.
And now we have thousands of protesters in Malmo outside the hotel where the young Israeli entrant is staying and apparently lots of booing when she performed at the competition. Nonetheless she’s through to the final tonight. I hope she’s allowed to perform without booing tonight.

Iam64 Sat 11-May-24 11:39:53

Well said maddy, calistemon and gsm. It’s nonsense to sanitise these camps and protests. Anti semitism on campus
