Should Israel not compete in the European Song Contest?

I’ve seen tonight on the BBC news, that there are thousands of people marching and gathering in Malmo in Sweden, demanding that the Israeli entry to the song contest should not be allowed. The young girl who is representing Israel is only twenty years old, and she has been advised by the Israelis to stay in her hotel room all the time, except when she’s performing, for her own safety.
This disturbs me. Why is it acceptable to terrorise a young woman who is there merely to sing a song in a competition?

Same sex relationships and/or sexual activity is banned in Gaza

It still has in place the British 1936 laws against homosexuality.

Yeah. If you'd read the link your would have realised the author was from the West Bank and read why he still thinks gay people should support Palestine.

Glorianny I read the link, if you read it to the end it mentions the British law.

So it does. It's also a post from a gay man who wants Palestinians supported by the LGBTQ society. So he agrees with the protest groups. Perhaps your parallels with anti-gay groups was a mistake.

You must spend all day researching, Glorianny to be able to impart so much information to all of the unenlightened masses on Gransnet.
How do you find the time to go on all these protests?

Thank you anyway.

Should Israel not compete in the Eurovision Song Contest?
I see the conversation has reverted to sex again. Should anywhere that condemns gays and lesbians be allowed to compete?

Very proud of Eden's performance despite all the horrible comments and booing. There was also a lot of clapping and she came 5th.
Amazing for a 20-year old, she held her head high and did a great job.

Galaxy Sun 12-May-24 06:41:28

Yes second highest of the public vote.

M0nica Sun 12-May-24 06:47:16

OH, for heavens sake Gloranny try reading posts and understanding them. No where did I suggest that being anti semitic was homophobic.

I was talking about demonstrations and mobs in general, whether they are anti-semitic, homophobic, demonstrating against cutting down trees, the closing of a school or the demise of a fish and chip shop.

When a large group of people get together to demonstrate against anything, even though all are essentially peaceful, there will always be a small group of people who join because they enjoy and want violence. The large group then takes on a personality of its own, quite separate from that of the individuals - and that is often an aggressive personality.

Look at reports of demonstrations all over the world and you see the dynamic, a large peaceful demonstration and then, spontaneously sometimes, or triggered by opposing groups, or forces of law and order, fighting starts, do all the demostrators scatter and go, no fighting starts, then vandalism, and if there are any opposing groups fights between them start. Then mobviolence takes over and ostensible peaceful demonstrators get drawn in.

Not sure what you're saying here. Israel, in Tel Aviv, also known as the Pink City., Lesbian,LGBT gay monrities have protection under law, although some of orthodox Jews disagree. The law is the law.

Israel was the first country i n the Middle East to recognise such rights.
Palestinians on the other hand,no no no to such rights.

Oreo Sun 12-May-24 08:35:45

What M0nica says is true.

Philippa60 Sun 12-May-24 08:41:46

Glorianny, have you ever visited Israel?
I'd be happy to show you around if you like.

Good for her!
5th place is not to be sniffed at.Our own effort should have come joint last with Ireland.

No there are a lot of places I haven't visited. Am I restricted to having opinions only about the places I have been to?

It's not somewhere that interests me particularly.
What happens in Israel may be perfectly lovely.
Unfortunately what Israel does to other places isn't.

Mollygo Sun 12-May-24 11:18:33

Unfortunately what Israel does to other places isn't.
And what other places do to Israelis, wherever they are obviously doesn’t count for some people.
There are wrongs in both sides, starting with the Hamas atrocities on this occasion.

I agree. I liked the Israeli entry.
It’s interesting that neutral Switzerland won. I thought their song was nothing special.
I thought the juries voting was interesting. Too frightened to vote for Israel so threw their votes behind neutral Switzerland. The public liked Israel’s song but also liked Switzerland’s song.
Nobody liked the British entry, but they rarely do. It’s strange because half the world wants to come to live here, and the other half won’t even give us a vote in a song contest 😂

Galaxy Sun 12-May-24 12:01:43

The British entry was awful. He cant sing.

It wouldn’t matter if he could grin

I've asked this before but I will try again.
I fully acknowledge the awful acts of terrorism that Hamas conducted on 7/10 needed to be dealt with.
That said how many Palestinians need to die before the requisite amount of punishment is met?
And will killing thousands of Palestinians really put an end to Hamas?

Callistemon21 Sun 12-May-24 12:12:47

In defence of Olly, he's had several hits with his band prior to this.

And how many antisemitic attacks and assaults need to happen world wide before the requisite amount of punishment is met?

rafichagran Sun 12-May-24 12:18:44

I though Eden conducted herself very well, she also gave a powerful beutiful performance.

Rondoallaturc Sun 12-May-24 12:37:04

Callistemon, you are right when you talk about people like Gloryannie having remarkable amounts of time to pursue negatives and to crusade for the re-education of the proletariat in her correct opinion. Sadly at a certain time in a care home ward with no one around them, pulse slowly diminishing, it may be too late to show positivity. Sad!

Galaxy Sun 12-May-24 13:21:35

Thats one of the most vile posts I have seen Rondo.
