Should Israel not compete in the European Song Contest?

I’ve seen tonight on the BBC news, that there are thousands of people marching and gathering in Malmo in Sweden, demanding that the Israeli entry to the song contest should not be allowed. The young girl who is representing Israel is only twenty years old, and she has been advised by the Israelis to stay in her hotel room all the time, except when she’s performing, for her own safety.
This disturbs me. Why is it acceptable to terrorise a young woman who is there merely to sing a song in a competition?

Whether the woman was shouting aat Shelmis or just generally is immaterial. To be anywhere near a demonstration where people are shouting through megaphones, joined by other people, a slogan that is, in this case anti-semitic, is going to be extremely intimidating to any Jewish person in hearing distance, when those doing it are part of a very large group, even in this country, were they to be close to the group and rcognised, they would almost undoubtedly be the subject of physical violence.

It is no different to the baying anti-gay mobs you used to get, the ones that fired a pub because it was a gay pub and killed several people.

Glorianny if the U.K. pro-Palestine camps are anything like those in the USA I totally understand why Shelmiss is concerned.

As others have posted upthread, not a day goes past where we hear from Jewish students on U.K. uni campuses who have been intimidated by pro-Palestinian supporters.

I do wonder why a fair few of the pro-Palestinian supporters, here and abroad feel the need to cover their faces with a Keffiyeh?

How does anyone know a jewish student anyway? Most are not easily identifiable.

And again we have the conflation of 'anti Netanyahu' and 'anti semitic'.
For clarity's sake, who on this thread supports Netanyahu, and who supports Hamas?
I will start the ball rolling, I support/agree with neither.

If someone criticises Putin they aren’t criticising everyone who is Russian Orthodox are they? So why is criticising Netanyahu ( who will probably go to jail when this war ends) be anti semitic?

If you knew anything about me or read myposts Freya you would know I live near one of the most easily identifiable group of Jewish people in the UK. They have lived there for many years and I hope are free from any abuse or attacks. Certainly none have been reported.

Most UK Jews are not easily recognisable. I think it's reasonable to ask how anyone on a UK campus identifies a Jewish student.
I don't think your Tube attacker was demonstrating was he?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 11-May-24 16:02:26

Glorianny there is a large Hasidic Jewish community close to me. They were always seen out and about, since 7th October they are conspicuous by their absence.

Maremia Sat 11-May-24 16:02:31

YES, MayBe 70, that is exactly the point I am trying to make.

Glorianny being supportive of Jews worldwide does not mean being unsympathetic towards the plight of innocent Palestinians.

Suggesting that posters are ignorant is a new low for you.

I really wish that you could find your empathy gene when posters say that they are intimidated rather than finding various ways to dismiss their feelings…

But people asked why demonstrators are wearing masks. That seems to indicate that they have no knowledge of the fears Palestinians in other countries have for those still living in areas controlled by Israel. What else is not knowing and not understanding?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 11-May-24 16:04:54

Glorianny whether or not the tube attacker was demonstrating or on his way to a demonstration is irrelevant.

The relevant part is that he intimated and attacked a Jew on a tube train in London, antisemitism is alive and kicking and not hiding anymore…

Maremia Sat 11-May-24 16:06:13

Molygo, do I understand you to mean that the thousands of children who have been being killed just now in Gaza were Hamas sympathisers? If that is so, what evidence do you present for this claim?

I've seen many from the community near me out and about, near their homes, and also at the train station.

Glorianny are you seriously suggesting that middle class white British students are likely to have relatives in Gaza, and that is the reason they are hiding their faces with a Keffiyeh?

Sorry M0nica that's a ridiculous comparison. No one is baying, no one is trying to burn anything, no one is trying to kill anyone.
A group of people are protesting about the slaughter of civilians and the oppression of Palestinians.

For many of them it's the latest bandwagon.

Glorianny they are fortunate not to live in close proximity to London where the pro-Palestinian marches are occurring regularly.

How do you know they are white? How do you know they are British? How do you know they are middle class?

There are around 20,000 Palestinians resident here. They will have children. Some of them will be in education. Others of Palestinian descent will be born British.
Of course some of them will have family in Gaza and the West Bank.

No but I don't think M0nica was either.
You really cannot equate a protest about the slaughter of civilians with anti-gay demonstrations.

Now you really are being ridiculous!

I have eyes, I can tell the difference between an Arab, and Asian a white person or indeed a black person.

I have ears and can tell an upper class accent when I hear it, just as I can tell a Welsh, Scottish, Irish (north or south), Asian, French accent etc.

The protestors on U.K. campuses or on the marches are more than happy to be interviewed to get their points of view across.

Are they being interviewed with their face covered? That must make it difficult to hear.
You know there are people of mixed race.Dual heritage some with a parent from Palestine, or Iran, or Afghanistan. I suppose you can tell them as well. Even with their face covered!!!
Such skill!!!
An ^upper-class accent^-not middle class then?

Glorianny does it ever occur to you that people other than yourself are capable of reading situations and observing the world?

It really is coming to the point where it is a total waste of my time replying to your posts, as you believe you and your opinions are the only ones that are true and matter…

M0nica Sat 11-May-24 17:27:28

Itisexactly the same. A mob shouting anti-semitic (homophobic) slogans and if a member of the condemned group is recognised the mob turn on them.

This will happen even when the majority of people present are non-violent, once mob rule takes over the result is the same.

Evidence of this?
Or is it just a fantasy?
So now support for Palestine is not only antisemitic it's homophobic as well. I suppose none of those demonstrating are gay then?
Perhaps you should read this article by a Palestinian Gay man on why homosexuals stand with Palestine
www.them.us/story/lgbtq-solidarity-palestine-saed-atshan
Or watch the Eurovision protests organised by Queers for Palestine.

Yeah my Twitter feed is full of gay men laughing at the irony of those protests.
