No surprise there.

It has been obvious for months

Do you think the hostages have access to medical care?

silverlining48 Sat 01-Jun-24 12:27:46

Maddy. Probably not, because of the situation in Gaza where there is no access, to anyone. It’s all been bombed out of existence as we have all seen on tv.
I have every sympathy for the hostages who are also innocent of any of this and it’s innocents who always suffer.
I don’t think Netanyahu is even interested in their release despite the families demonstrations in Israel. He has his own agenda which might be his reliance on his far right government refusing to agree to any peace talks. He would also end up in prison in all probability once he loses power.

There is access to medical care in Gaza. We know this because we’ve all seen people being rushed into hospitals, although they are absolutely overwhelmed with patients, I know some hospitals have been bombed to destruction though, so clearly medical facilities are far too limited now. However bad things are in Gaza, and they are bad, there was never a reason for the terrorists to take hostages into Gaza and to torture and rape them.
It’s all terrible, but we must remember that if Hamas had not gone on that murderous rampage on October 7th 2023, and taken the over two hundred men, women, and children into Gaza as hostages, this situation would never have happened.
Whatever we think of Netanyahu, the Israelis have voted him into power six times according to what I’ve read. This surprised me somewhat to be honest. I have no idea what will happen to him after all this is over, and that is the business of the Israelis, because Israel is a democratic country. But now the objective must be to release the remaining hostages and return the bodies of those hostages who have been killed, and to secure a ceasefire which must be adhered to by both sides, and finally to get more food and services into Gaza. What may happen in the long term is something none of us can know.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 01-Jun-24 13:49:03

One thing for sure - as long as Israel acts as an occupying force denying people a statehood there will never be peace.

foxie48 Sat 01-Jun-24 15:05:15

Just to clarify, Netanyahu didn't get a majority, the Likud party got 23% of the votes and it has only been by bringing in the far right that he has managed to stay in power as PM.

Here's an account of conditions in Gaza.
84% of healthcare places are damaged
Before the war Gaza only had electricity for 12 hours a day. Now it has none.

Quite some support for the far right obviously

Grantanow Sat 01-Jun-24 15:42:20

The original post says 'ICJ seeks'. It is NOT the court which seeks warrants, it is the prosecutor asking the court to issue warrants. That is why the OP is inaccurate.

Uri Geller, just listened to him speak of ‘peace in our time’

Quite some support for the far right obviously

They are a mixture of far right and ultra- orthodox parties, who believe in advancing settlements and do not recognise the rights of the Palestinians. Whereas secular Jews in Israel are more on the left politically and tend to be much more supportive of a two party state. The definition of right and left is not the same as we would understand in the UK. It is of note that the orthodox Jews have a much higher birthrate than the secular Jews and this has meant they are a much more powerful group than they were in the past. Israel is far from the country that Ben Gurion founded which was built on socialist principles. However, Israel has proportional representation and the difference between the votes was equivalent to less than one seat on the Knesset, so the country was pretty much equally divided.

On Ashley’s Wikipedia bio it says that one person has been found guilty and jailed, the other is awaiting sentencing for stealing her diary….

Sorry wrong thread 🤷‍♀️

Update:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz55y6k0p5go

The far right parties will not agree with the peace deal, but other parties willing to step up for a coalition. Meanwhile "10's. of thousands" demonstrating.

I just hope a way can be found.

foxie48 Sun 02-Jun-24 11:51:54

Thanks, I'd read that and it was exactly what I thought would happen. Thousands are telling Netanyahu to step down and the families of the hostages are saying he never prioritised getting the hostages home. What a mess. Smotrich and Ben-Givr need to be ousted too, they say they will leave the govt if he agrees a deal, well he needs to call their bluff.

Wyllow3 Sun 02-Jun-24 12:02:42

Yes, I was surprised that Smotrich and Ben-Givr actually said they would withdraw from the government if it goes ahead - they've laid down a challenge.

Smotrich wants permanent occupation of Gaza. Are Israeli families prepared to back this with more family members recruited to the IDF?

Wyllow3 Sun 02-Jun-24 12:05:28

Or ideas of moving Israel’s Palestinians out of Gaza?

Anniebach Sun 02-Jun-24 12:05:34

Do they want to live with daily fear of Hamas

Wyllow3 Sun 02-Jun-24 12:07:53

No, agreed.
Its's a "how". Whether both sides let international involvement in? (I have to say, if I were a Palestinian, I might not want Hamas either but not feel able to say so!)

My Jewish friend posted on her Facebook page today:

We live in a world
Where Jewish women
Who are raped
Are valued less than the
Terrorists who raped them.

I know that people are concerned for the Palestinians on Gransnet, rather the terrorists, but I can understand why my friend, and other Jewish people would think this. It’s how appears to them. They have lived a lifetime of antisemitism and all the marches, and online comments convince them that this is the case. I have seen some antisemitic posts on Gransnet. Some have been deleted. Others still stand.

No, I don't think so. There is a group of parents who are saying they don't want their children in Gaza and are asking for a permanent ceasefire. I wonder how it sits with them that the children of the Ultra-orthodox can dodge military service and study the Torah instead?

Wyllow3 Sun 02-Jun-24 12:17:58

Officially that status has apparently been abolished (I went googling)

www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/04/israel-ultra-orthodox-jews-haredim-benjamin-netanyahu-court-military-conscription-gaza-war#:~:text=The%20special%20legal%20status%20of,mandatory%20for%20most%20other%20Jewish

Worth reading as politically their views are very complicated.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That’s exactly what a lot of Jewish people are thinking.
Even on a forum like this there are well meaning older women who are effectively airbrushing the horrible murders of last October from history by saying ‘oh but the poor Palestinians were being repressed by Israel so what do they expect’ and ‘today’s terrorists are tomorrow’s freedom fighters’. I have read both those messages on threads here.Quite a few things said are def antisemitic, it gives the world a free pass to let rip on that.

Wyllow3 Sun 02-Jun-24 12:36:21

I agree with challenging anti-semitism when found on here! No free passes.

But what do you think of "which way ahead?"

Anniebach Sun 02-Jun-24 12:37:35

Maddy Oreo. 👏👏👏👏

Whitewavemark2 Sun 02-Jun-24 14:22:56

If I was an Israeli citizen with a son or daughter being held hostage, and then I heard that my government was turning down the chance of them being returned home, I would fight Netanyahu with every breath in my body.

Every day that goes past, means there is less likely hood of them returning home.
