No surprise there.

It has been obvious for months

I would guess that most of the hostages are dead, and the ones left alive, if any, now seem of very little importance on the world stage including on here where only one or two seem to have concern for them. A cease fire must include immediate return of ALL.hostages, dead or alive, but of course that won't happen, so not much hope for a cease fire. S.A needs to take a long hard look at itself and question its record on human rights? Abysmal come to mind.

Well......... imo things can't move forward unless they return hostages. Part of cease fire.

The O/P is far too brief.
"The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has applied for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas's leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, for war crimes.

Karim Khan KC said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both men bore criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity from the day of Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October onwards.

Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas's political leader Ismail Haniyeh, along with the group's military chief Mohammed Deif, are also wanted for arrest."

Hamas will return hostages ?

The O/P sums it up perfectly ‘Netanyahu and others’

The others are of no importance,

Wyllow3 Sat 25-May-24 12:53:52

Need a cease fire first?

Anniebach Sat 25-May-24 12:31:24

Hamas will obey. ?

Yes, neither set of civilians can be blamed for what their leaders do. They just suffer the consequences.

Surely that is why the ICC has taken this step? To try to prevent more civilians suffering the consequences of their leaders (on both sides). Any trial will have to be supported by proper evidence. Israel has not allowed free access but there are validated videos that have been seen and reports from a number of established and well respected NGOs. I believe the ICC has asked for Israel to permit access to Gaza by independent people.

SA were wrong to submit only one State's leaders for investigation. There's a long, dreadfully sad, complicated history since 1948, many wrongs, many "inevitable but how to attribute blame's", many attempts to broker peace.

I dont think it the most useful way of getting people round the table atm

Wyllow3 Sat 25-May-24 12:04:42

Yes:
It's important to me that we are addressing the leaders/regimes of the parties involved not the whole of a peoples. That not all Israeli citizens or Palestinian citizens agree with a regime (s).
There's a lot to unpick.

DiamondLily Sat 25-May-24 11:57:33

Of course, but I think the leaders of both sides have been awful.

I think any prosecutions should wait until there can be independent reports.

Both sides indulge in spin, propaganda and lies.🤷‍♀️

Any prosecutions will wait until after an arrest warrant is issued anyway. But surely such a ruling should cause concern?

No Annie, a country defending itself is not breaking international law but this has gone way beyond that.

Glorianny Sat 25-May-24 10:50:22

Anniebach

A country defending itself against attack is breaking international law ? No

So you know better than the lawyers from many different countries who make up the ICJ?
Are you suggesting that they are all antisemitic?

Anniebach Sat 25-May-24 10:46:07

Protection for all , Jews being the exception

Glorianny Sat 25-May-24 10:41:43

Anti semitism must be exposed, be it in lavatories or courts of law.

International law is just that Anniebach it is applied regardless of religion or nationality. Breaking it means that nowhere has any sort of humanity or morality or protection. It was established to provide protection for all. Disregarding it is dangerous.

I wondered "why SA" too and googled a bit of history - it seems it goes back to the 1990's

"The African National Congress had close relations with Palestine Liberation Organization. Nelson Mandela had close relations with Yasser Arafat. After the first non-racial elections in 1994, South Africa established diplomatic relations with the State of Palestine on February 15, 1995.

Anniebach Sat 25-May-24 10:39:26

I so agree Oreo

A discussion about an Israeli head of state breaking international law diverted to graffiti in toilets. I suppose when there is absolutely no justification for some views it is the only way to go.

And what do you have to say about anyone painting swastikas on doors?
Hmmm?

Start a thread on that and I'll comment. This is about the Israeli Head of State breaking International Law.
What is more important?

Oreo Sat 25-May-24 10:34:28

SA must be either wanting more brownie points on the world stage or is in a helluva mess internally, and where do they get off being high and mighty with their record on human rights!!

Anniebach Sat 25-May-24 10:25:24

South Africa needs to sort itself out

Wyllow3 Sat 25-May-24 10:24:49

I think we can talk about both, its not an either/or.

Are you suggesting that the judges who made this decision have acted out of anti semitism and not on the evidence that they have seen and heard?
