No surprise there.

It has been obvious for months

Nothing will happen. He'll simply howl about anti-semetism, that old smokescreen, Biden will back him up and that's it. The End.

It is anti semitism

I'm glad people are starting to realise this isn't about taking sides but about humanity. Once we lose sight of that it's a bleak world indeed.

Here's hoping!

I think tbh it began with the Balfour declaration. Western interference.

Prior to that people of all faiths lived cheek by jowl in peace and harmony.

That's not quite true, but it's certainly true that the policy makers didn't care less about the people who already lived on the land which Zionists were promised.

Jews and Muslims have not "historically hated each other". Jews lived peacefully in the Muslim territory know as Al Andaluz, which comprised Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and the South of France.
Jews constituted more than five per cent of the population. Al-Andalus was a key centre of Jewish life during the early Middle Ages, produced important scholars and was one of the most stable and wealthy Jewish communities.
The real persecution, the forcible conversion, the burning and execution began when the Christians conquered the area. And many of the antisemitic views are linked to Christianity.

Muslims and Jews also lived together in Palestine until after WW2. It was the events of 1948 when Jewish terrorists the Irgun began driving out Muslims that caused the conflict.

But that's why Jews were driven out of the Holy Land hundreds of years ago. The three Abrahamic religions have been fighting over it for centuries. I don't think it's true that Jews and Arabs have always lived in harmony, but if you look back through history, Christians have been responsible for most of the persecution of Jews - and the direct reason that the state of Israel was created in 1948.

Thank you. My wonky spelling.

Oreo Wed 22-May-24 17:39:47

The history may be interesting but we are where we are right here and now.
Christians don’t bother Jews but Muslims generally and Arab Muslims specifically do have a problem with Jews. That won’t end for a very long time.

maddyone Wed 22-May-24 17:50:14

That certainly seems to be the case Oreo.

Steelygran Wed 22-May-24 18:26:05

There are too many generalisations here about Muslim people and Palestinians. There seems to be quite a disturbing undertone to this discussion.
All lives are surely equal - those of Palestinians as much as Israelis.

Absolutely correctSteelygran

The ICJ has ordered Israel as follows; "immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part". It has also order Israel to open the Rafah crossing to allow aid into Gaza. Israel will, of course, ignore it. The full judgement can be found here.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-May-24 15:27:02

foxie48 the ICJ has also ordered Hamas to immediately release all livd hostages and return the bodies of all those who have died.

I doubt very much that Hamas will comply.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-May-24 15:27:48

Oh flippity flip livd should be live

maddyone Fri 24-May-24 15:29:35

They should allow aid in, but they need to find the hostages. Their bodies, which clearly have been kept, or those who have survived, and they need to apprehend the Hamas fighters holed up in Rafah.
Imagine if some authority had said in WW2, stop before you reach Berlin. The allies would have taken not a jot of notice and so fascism was overcome.

Vintagewhine Fri 24-May-24 17:51:29

Hamas is a terrorist organization so I wouldn't expect it to follow any rules or orders and those that are supporting them with arms and money won't be bothered either. It's a different situation for Israel because of the countries that have signed up to the UN, it will be of concern to them. Didn't the UN come into existence because of the abuses committed in WW2?

Swastikas have been painted in lavatories in an Oxford College

foxie48 Fri 24-May-24 18:13:40

That's disgraceful. I would chuck out anyone found doing anything like that and refer them to the police.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-May-24 18:54:02

Utterly unacceptable and ignorant.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-May-24 18:58:00

Swastikas have been painted in lavatories in an Oxford College

What on earth are they teaching/learning at uni’s these days!

foxie48 Fri 24-May-24 19:29:19

It appears that the graffiti was on two toilet doors, the police have been involved and the college authorities are taking the matter very seriously. I think it would be wrong to assume that this is the sort of behaviour that is representative of most students, at Oxford or anywhere else.

Anniebach Fri 24-May-24 19:33:13

The lavatories, suitable place for antisemites

maddyone Fri 24-May-24 21:38:39

I think it must have been done either by students, or by someone who works in the college. When my son was at Oxford (St John’s College) no one could get into the college without a pass. There was a gateman. He knew the students. Visitors had to be collected by their student or get a pass. This was in term time. I think parts of the colleges are open during holidays and visitors can visit the quads. So I think it must have been an insider and not some random person from outside.

Glorianny Sat 25-May-24 09:49:31

A discussion about an Israeli head of state breaking international law diverted to graffiti in toilets. I suppose when there is absolutely no justification for some views it is the only way to go.
