Paula Vennells has arrived at the inquiry to answer to her part in the Post Office Scandal. The Mirror says how much her life has changed without her highly lucrative job and losing the opportunity to become Bishop of London. I care not one jot for how her life has changed because it won't have changed as much as the poor postmasters and mistresses.

The KC is not having any of it. No one believes her lies at the inquiry. She's a disgrace for the decisions she made

Deedaa On the contrary Paula Vennells has shown haw far the equality of women has gone. Once even competent women could not rise to the heights that she has. Now we know that being a woman does not impeded even incompetent women form rising to the top!

I didn't know it was called the Peter principle MOnica but I saw it happen so many times in local government. People earning large salaries who were totally incompetent but continued to rise in the ranks.

I would say Paula Vennells is truly incompetent and has reached her high position through duplicity, supreme self-confidence, flattery and contacts in high places. Being an ordained minister will have made employers reluctant to doubt her veracity.
The tears are flowing because she is finally being forced to confront the immense trouble she is in, not regret for the irreparable damage she has caused to others. She is by no means the only person responsible but she is condemned because as an ordained priest she was presumed to be a person of integrity, and was awarded a CBE for her 'services.'

It's astonishing how people with such poor memories manage to bag themselves jobs at exec level on mega salaries. So many of them say they are totally ignorant of the responsibilities of the role they hold and their obligations to stakeholders and customers. Either they are total thickos or gold plated bull shitters
I've made my decision in which profile fits best.

When my son told me she was an Anglican vicar I tended to disbelieve him.

"Bless me Father for I have sinned"

Deedaa Thu 23-May-24 21:23:14

Well she's managed, single handedly, to put back the fight for women's equality by decades. And she's not done the Church Of England much good either.

Elrel Thu 23-May-24 21:15:53

She needs to stop feeling sorry for herself and start telling the truth.

M0nica Thu 23-May-24 20:17:30

Exactly!

Perhaps she will claim that she is suffering from Alzheimers or similar.

Do you remember Ernest Saunders and the Guiness tax scandal in the 1980s? he used the Alzheiners/depression/mental illness card to keep hmself out of gaol, or at least shorten his sentence.

Then managed to find his lost memory.

"I forget" is another way of saying "no comment."

Callistemon21 Thu 23-May-24 18:16:42

It takes quite a degree of competence to be a successful liar.

So far she is not even showing much competence at lying.
She's terribly forgetful.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 23-May-24 18:14:31

Or both …

Callistemon21 Thu 23-May-24 18:12:43

Germanshepherdsmum

Her memory seems somewhat patchy for someone in such a position.

She's either lying or was incredibly incompetent.

Smileless2012 Thu 23-May-24 17:15:26

IMO she's attempting to mislead the inquiry by lying GSM.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 23-May-24 17:10:06

I have only seen small clips of PV’s evidence, but what I have heard leads me to think she is what a judge would call ‘an unreliable witness’. Someone in such a position with apparently so little grasp of what was happening in the organisation is stretching credibility. And as an ordained cleric I hope she is not misleading the inquiry or, worse, lying.

M0nica Thu 23-May-24 16:54:25

62Gtanny it is called the Peter Principle.

The Peter principle states that in a hierarchical organisation every employee will rise in the hierarchy through promotion until they reach a level of incompetence.

There is a corollary to that and that is that they then get promoted above that level to move them from one job they are incompetent at on to another job where they will be even more incompetent.

This also applies to people getting their promotion by moving upwards by moving from company to company.

madeleine45 Thu 23-May-24 16:31:20

the crocodile tears meant nothing. She was in one of two situations. Either she totally knew what was happening, and was behaving in a dishonest and deceitful way and deserved to go to jail, Or she was totally incompetent in her job and did not know what others were doing . When you are the boss you are responsible for what happens and the buck stops with you. That is why you are paid well to deal with things. Either way she is at fault, and I am not surprised when people think her apologies are worthless

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 23-May-24 16:29:54

I wonder how she got through the selection process for ordination.

62Granny Thu 23-May-24 16:19:43

It makes you wonder how these people manage to fall into these high level jobs and be so incompetent at the same time. As I heard someone say "her tears are for herself NOT for the people she hurt with her incompetence"

Oldbat1 Thu 23-May-24 16:16:48

I am confused to what actually she did do to earn her huge salary. It seems she did very little and everyone else is responsible for everything. She has not held her hands up to anything. No integrity. I don’t feel at all sorry for her.

Blackwit Thu 23-May-24 15:56:52

I’ve been dipping into this inquiry and all I’m hearing is ‘I don’t recall/ I wasn’t told/ no-one showed me this/ it was someone else’s responsibility. What management skills does Vennells have? Where was the oversight? They all (particularly the legal team) appear to be inept and unprofessional at the very least. I think they all believed they’d never be held to account for the untold damage they caused.

Iam64 Thu 23-May-24 12:25:20

Oreo, she’s well practiced in obfuscation and distraction isn’t she. I suspect she’s worked hard on these existing skills in preparation for this inquiry.
I recognise our concern is her professional competence and honesty but - she strikes me as cold, clinical and manipulative
