I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

hollysteers Fri 24-May-24 20:01:37

Tactical voter here to help the Tories on their way (out).

Speaking as a pinkish person, GSM your comments are surprisingly narrow minded from a very successful professional (so I believe) and it is not morally superior for Gransnet to be “the only social media I use”.
Do you not have intellectual, and even professional, friends who vote Labour?
I do.

This thread has turned into the script for a sitcom.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-May-24 19:57:13

Yup, yawn, ditto politics of envy, "they're ignorant" and offensive to the many LP members I know from many backgrounds. Cheap labels from the lazy.

Ok I must be a champagne socialist because I enjoy champagne and avoid Prosecco.
I have in-law relatives who live in the south east, they do not know a single Labour voter other than our shared relative, the wonderful mr I, who died 18 months ago, along with his/ our adult children, my sisters and pretty much all our friends. Our friends are journalists, teachers, doctors, architects, lawyers, social workers, psychologists, vets, personal trainers, bid writers, sales execs, senior managers in private and public sectors and more. We share a desire for a Labour government. It won’t be perfect in anyone’s eyes we will all have favoured areas deserving of more public money. Our in laws in the south east are without exception conservative voters. They don’t quite ‘ get’ what they call “the north”.

Fine lot of good Johnson’s so called charisma did for the country

I didn’t mention Boris Johnson, nor was I even thinking of him. However I think Janet Street-Porter is right. This is a thread about, and for posters who don’t know who to vote for, which includes me, and I’m certain doesn’t include you Maybee, but please correct me if I’m wrong. As far as I’m concerned, both Sunak and Starmer are charmless and unconvincing. I’m fairly certain I won’t vote for either of their parties, but that leaves me with a quandary because who on earth do I vote for?

I'll post what I like thank you, just who do you think you are to tell me what I can and can't post, anyway I'm sure you'll be there ready and waiting to correct any posters who get it wrong although only if the posters support Conservatives or Reform.

If you lie I, or somebody else will correct what you say, yes.

Ee by gum, me lady Germanshepherdsmum ‘ere’s yer delivery - sorry fer me dirty ‘ands. Can’t afford no water to wash ‘em.

Doffs cap; bows head; walks backwards away from ‘er ladyship. Bluddy ‘ell!!!

What rubbish. Don’t you ever have anything delivered? Do the delivery guys speak to you like that? And btw people in Norfolk don’t speak with northern accents.

Well GSM it was your choice to put greed above anything else.

I was very surprised to read such a rude and unkind comment as this on Gransnet. I thought we were better than this.

LizzieDrip Fri 24-May-24 19:42:26

GSM
“The phrase “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” currently means being able to do something by yourself. No matter your circumstances, this phrase implies, you should be able to achieve wealth and success.”

This is how you constantly describe your life experience. I rest my case!

zakouma66 Fri 24-May-24 19:38:18

What is a bootstrap anyway?

Haha, I’ve just read that Janet Street-Porter has described our two main Party leaders thus; two leaders who are about as charismatic as a slap in the face with a wet kipper. It made me laugh and how right she is.

Fine lot of good Johnson’s so called charisma did for the country.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 24-May-24 19:35:43

Where have I said I have ‘pulled myself up by my bootstraps’ Lizzie? I didn’t come from the gutter.

Champagne socialists…hmm.
My tory friend kept referring to champagne socialists in that dismissive judgemental fashion and I had to ask why people who vote Labour shoukd not have a glass of bubbly now and again. She had no answer.

I think you can only be a Socialist if you say " Ey up Trouble at Mill".

Flat hat, flat vowels are the order of the day.

LizzieDrip Fri 24-May-24 19:20:59

I hold my hands up to not really knowing anyone who votes Labour. Maybe the delivery drivers and the ladies who serve me in local shops are dyed in the wool Labour supporters but it’s not exactly what you discuss in passing. My perception comes from what I read on GN (the only social media I use) and from ‘ordinary’ people I see interviewed on tv

Wow! GSM just when I think you couldn’t get any more narrow-minded and prejudiced, you come out with a statement like that. You sound like a 19th Century lady of the manner. You, who have supposedly (as you often like to tell us) pulled yourself up ‘by your bootstraps’ don’t know anyone who votes Labour. I can almost hear the sneer in your voice when I read your post. I suppose I’ll be accused, by your ‘fans’, of being rude to you - well, so be it. There are some people who just don’t deserve anything else.

I’ll decide on the day. Not convinced by any of them.

Hear hear.

I am leaning towards Reform.
Dont know if they will put up a candidate here.

As it happens, our MP I quite like.

I may do what I have done before, and vote for a minor candidate.

I so wish people wouldnt autmatically keep voting for one of the two main partes.
And then complain there is no one to vote for!
When there ballot often has up to 10 candidates on it. [Not in Scotland as I understand it].

All in all, I am clear as mud really.

Then vote LibDem and campaign for proportional representation.

I take your point about proportional representation.
Though from what little I know, it makes for muddled leadership/government.

No to LibDem. Sometimes I feel I am most far from Lib Dem out of all the parties.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 24-May-24 19:17:11

It’s a fine line between incentivising entrepreneurship and attracting investors/investment in the UK which should in my opinion have tax advantages and the multi millionaire/billionaires who have risked their money on the above and now reaping rewards paying accountants to keep their tax liabilities as low as possible.

Ooops! I meant "make" not "male" in my last post.

Yes, we know that, but is avoidance always moral or what the Treasury needs? The government just has to change the law to male avoidance illegal. Maybe it does need to be discussed - and who better than somebody who knows what he's talking about?

Avoidance covers ISA’s , not sure abolishing them will be a vote winner.

They aren't after small savers/ISA's check out the article.

You know as well as I do that there are some methods of tax avoidance which are on the verge of being immoral. Presumably that kind of issue would be discussed. Any government uses tax incentives to influence behaviour. ISAs are intended to encourage people to save.

We have friends of all political persuasions, rich Conservatives, Champagne Socialists, those who never vote, some who only have state pensions (who happen to be dyed in the wool Tories)

I value my friends for themselves not for their political views.

Ah! So you do know some socialists. Do they know you think they're thick?

I have never and would never call anyone thick growstuff

I assume you are mixing me up with another poster?

Sorry, I apologise. Yes, I did mean another poster.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-May-24 18:53:03

I have no need to expand my social circle wwm. I’m surprised your conversations with delivery drivers extend to knowing their political preferences. I only ask about their day, how many more deliveries they have to do and talk about the weather. I doubt they would welcome being questioned about their political preferences.

Good grief passing the time of day with other folk is one of life’s pleasures 😄 and that includes moaning (or supporting) the government. Making assumptions about their voting preferences is also not terribly intelligent as we cannot know anything about their educational or social background.
