Just that really.

BlueBelle Tue 28-May-24 16:03:40

Well it was very obvious that she was being used as a scapegoat
I hope she gets apologies and compensation for blackening her name
Disgusting behaviour

vegansrock Tue 28-May-24 16:08:56

It was over 10 years ago and a few hundred quid. I don’t think anyone was really outraged by this, unlike the Michele Mone scandal involving millions, water companies paying dividendsto shareholders yet still in debt, utliliy bosses paid huge bonuses etc etc.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 28-May-24 16:09:53

Of what? There were allegations of breaching electoral law, falsely claiming single person’s council tax discount and tax evasion.

winterwhite Tue 28-May-24 16:10:19

Good. What we saw there was not pretty. I hope she'll bring some much-needed verve to the Labour campaign.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 28-May-24 16:11:24

Verve?

M0nica Tue 28-May-24 16:13:37

No, she has not been cleared. The police have cleared her saying 'council tax and personal tax do not fall into the jurisdiction of policing'

She is still be being investigated by HMRC, this is the main enquiry, the police investigation as just a little something on the side.

Verve?

From Dictionary.com:
^enthusiasm or vigor, as in literary or artistic work; spirit: Her latest novel lacks verve.
vivaciousness; liveliness; animation: I like a teacher with plenty of verve.^

Be fair Germanshepherdsmum, you are never going to vote Labour - you have told us more than once that you are going to vote Tory, as you are perfectly entitled to do - so what difference does it make to you what Angela Rayner does? You had an interest in whether she would be cleared or not, as we all did, but if other voters think she will bring verve to the campaign, they are entitled to do so! smile

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 16:19:25

Hang on. Just now in The Telegraph:

“ Police hand file on Angela Rayner two home row to HMRC
Spokesman says council tax and personal tax matters fall outside of its jurisdiction”

So just not a Police matter. Maybe just a tax payment issue?

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 16:20:12

X posed MOnica 😁

winterwhite Tue 28-May-24 16:20:28

Thank you, Doodledog. -vigour, enthusiasm, liveliness and animation- have not characterised the Labour campaign so far.

DiamondLily Tue 28-May-24 16:20:46

Well, she’s been cleared of the criminal stuff. The tax situation continues.🤷‍♀️

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 16:21:09

Eden Square Davey’s got that covered on his paddle board.

Callistemon21 Tue 28-May-24 16:21:44

To be fair, it was questioning the use of the word verve! Nothing wrong with that.
Verve is not a term I'd use to describe her at all.

As M0nica says, the investigations continue.

Gawd. I really must start proof reading …

Now to go after James Daly MP, a most peculiar man, who wrote to the police sparking off this whole fiasco but - oddly - when he appeared on various daytime progs and was asked exactly what he was accusing her of, he couldn't seem to make any sense. In effect, refusing to answer.

In effect, he must have been making it up. And that will be his eternal footmark in history.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 28-May-24 16:24:28

So she has only been cleared of the more minor offences - in respect of one no action could be taken now anyway. I would certainly like to see her convicted of tax evasion. No matter the amount involved, it’s a serious crime involving dishonesty.

DiamondLily Tue 28-May-24 16:26:21

If she has defrauded tax, then, like anyone else, she needs to pay the penalty..

If she hasn’t, then all good.

Callistemon21 Tue 28-May-24 16:27:37

Eden Square Davey’s got that covered on his paddle board.

Why do they get up to these daft photo opportunities?

They just make themselves look stupid and incompetent.
Neil falling over in the sea
Someone feeding his little daughter a beef burger during the BSE scandal
Ed M eating a beef burger
Boris on a zip wire
Now Ed D falling off a paddle board into calm (polluted) water

We do need to be careful what we post.

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 16:32:22

Well it seems that’s one issue but what about the capital gains tax which either she should have paid when she sold her own house or which she and her husband should have paid on the house that he sold. As a married couple you’re only allowed one principal residence? The other attracts CGT.

winterwhite Tue 28-May-24 16:34:17

Has it been shown that it was intentional dishonesty rather than a careless mistake? I didn't think so but may be wrong.

It can be hard to find the moral distinction between a small amount of evaded tax and £kkk of deliberately avoided tax.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 28-May-24 16:41:19

Tax evasion is tax evasion. Being careless with your taxes is not a defence, neither is the amount involved relevant to whether a crime has been committed. As I recall, Starmer has not seen what Rayner described as the ’advice’ she obtained, including advice from, of all people, an estate agent. He’s not stupid.

Oldbat1 Tue 28-May-24 16:43:16

Excellent!
