Just that really.

A member of my family votes conservative, seems this affects my political judgment !

zakouma66 Thu 30-May-24 09:03:53

I'm afraid decency and integrity have left the building long ago.

Nye Bevan, John Smith and so on. A bygone era. Mo Mowlan.

Although I are say somebody will point out some failings on their part.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 09:08:36

Keir Starmer, Gordon Brown, Harriett Harman, Neil Kinnock,

Quite agree that it is not AR’s fault that her immediate family are actively involved in the sex industry but doesn’t say much for that family’s political judgment or perhaps this is the sort of publicity AR wants?

Can you explain what her son’s involvement in porn says about the family’s political judgment? Do families have collective politics? Mine doesn’t. My mum and sister are Tories, and at least one family member is reputed to vote Lib Dem😲. Democracy, eh?

zakouma66 Thu 30-May-24 09:15:27

I think Gordon Brown is a man of principal and decency.

A human being with some backbone and morality.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 09:17:12

Agree, and a kind , gentle man with a good sense of humour

zakouma66 Thu 30-May-24 09:23:25

And not swigging bottles of wine every evening.

ronib Thu 30-May-24 09:28:45

Doodledog my take on this is that politicians are people in authority and with some degree of power. If I was running for office, I would beg my son to take down his porn site before it was discovered. Although I have to say that for the left wing, porn does seem a strange career choice but I expect it pays well. It doesn’t create a favourable impression in the more fuddy duddy voting population who crave normality and cross your legs Rayner is not filling that role. Role models…..

zakouma66 Thu 30-May-24 09:29:49

" cross your legs" ?

ronib Thu 30-May-24 09:30:40

Yup definitely the front bench in the House of Commons all need to wear trousers….

Doodledog Thu 30-May-24 09:48:31

ronib I would ask my son not to profit from porn whether I were running for office or not, but that's not the point. I don't know anything about the son's politics - is he left wing?

I'm not defending him. I don't like the porn industry at all. I'm not sure where it sits on the left/right political axis though - perhaps you can explain that one?

My point is simple. He is not Angela Rayner. Whether he is a serial killer or a saint is nothing to do with her.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 10:05:52

I so remember the mother of Dennis Nilsen, serial killer and
Necrophile , she traveled from Scotland every month to visit him, she was asked why visit such a man? Her reply?
He is my son.

Doodledog Thu 30-May-24 10:20:40

Quite. And are those who decry AR lining up to criticise the late Queen for not disowning Prince Andrew?

Has AR commented on any of this?

JaneJudge Thu 30-May-24 10:25:51

This thread has made an interesting read

ronib Thu 30-May-24 10:28:34

Doodledog not sure where your argument is taking you. As sure as light is day, Prince Andrew has been excluded from public life. Some kind of minimal standards on public life are very loosely applied still .
No one is decrying AR for her son whatever that means.

Galaxy Thu 30-May-24 10:28:37

Porn is vile and frequently abusive, I a not cheering it on for any political party. I actually think those who describe it as work are complicit in legitimising the harm it does.

JaneJudge Thu 30-May-24 10:31:13

and then there is Only Fans

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 10:41:30

I’m not defending porn - I don’t watch it or like it.

But, Only Fans is not really like the old style porn and sex industry. It’s purely voluntary, and people, of all sorts, seem to do various things on it.

No pimps, no exploitation, from what I know of it.

But, regardless, Rayner’s son and DIL are adults. You only need to read a few threads on GN to know that most older parents have little or no say in what their adult children do or say.

So, I wouldn’t hold this against her.🤷‍♀️

Galaxy Thu 30-May-24 10:47:06

I dont hold it against her but I am certainly not giving a moments thought to the possible hurt feelings of someone in the porn industry.

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 10:54:31

Fair enough. But, no one has suggested that Rayner herself is involved, and nor have they said that her son and DIL are feeling hurt.

Galaxy Thu 30-May-24 11:00:40

There is lots of 'oh not the children'.
It is of course possible that they or one of them have been coerced, in fact generally those involved particularly women fare very badly. It's one of those who are the perpetrators and who are the victims. But I am glad it has been raised so people can talk about it.

My argument is that AR has no control over her son, any more than the late Queen had over hers, or any of us have over the actions of adult children.

I see that as uncomplicated, but am struggling with your notion of 'family political judgement' and don't know how you are aware enough of the son's personal politics to feel that he has made a 'strange career choice'. Can you elucidate, please? If you are not decrying AR, what are you doing? Making a link between her son's behaviour and her political views is doing just that.

Galaxy I don't think anyone is excusing or cheering on porn, and I haven't seen anything suggesting that the son is complaining about hurt feelings.

Raynor has been cleared, it's time to stop picking on everything about her and family personally. How many MP's would stand up to equal scrutiny. Stick to the politics.
