Just that really.

Maremia Thu 30-May-24 11:40:02

Wasn't it the tightening up of tax avoidance/evasion protocols that really prompted BEXIT?

Maremia Thu 30-May-24 11:42:32

Willow3, nailed it.

Doodledog of course working in the sex industry is not your standard middle class career choice. When you have a very high profile mother , I wonder why you would risk discrediting her especially when she is seeking high office?
Maybe it’s just sour grapes on my part having guided my adult children to meaningful and useful career paths. It tends to reinforce the differences between the Labour Party and myself and although I had seriously considered voting Labour, I see that it does not align with my values.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-May-24 11:51:34

Nor mine. I have to wonder about the upbringing of someone who thinks being a sex worker is an acceptable way to earn a living, and about the values of their parents.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 12:05:28

GSM you hold parents responsible for their adult choices ?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-May-24 12:13:04

If they are both parenting the child, yes I do. They should be instilling values into the child. The values instilled into this young man are highly questionable.

Maribr Thu 30-May-24 12:16:14

German Shepard - please don’t get high and mighty about dishonesty , or we could start discussing the many cases of dishonesty perpetrated by this government, their friends like Michelle Mone and dare I mention Boris . I agree dishonesty is wrong but the Angela Raynor case pales into insignificance compared to that lot . Anyway - PS I read HMRC are not proceeding with her case either

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 12:16:49

I think some of this is unfair. Of course most of us try to influence our children to be productive adults in worthwhile careers.

But, it doesn’t always work like that.

Thatcher’s son was, quite honestly, devious and dishonest. But, like her or loathe her, you can’t really blame her for his behaviour.

The offspring of plenty of politicians, all parties, and royals, has been less than savoury.

As parents, we can only do our best. If my ACs chose to set up an Only Fans website, they wouldn’t be influenced by my opinions. I hope they don’t - but I wouldn’t feel responsible if they did.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-May-24 12:21:30

Dishonesty is dishonesty. It doesn’t come on a sliding scale. As a retired solicitor honesty and integrity have always been important personal qualities to me. That is not ‘getting high and mighty’.

Casdon Thu 30-May-24 12:23:45

Should anybody be petty enough to search the annals to find evidence of the transgressions of MPs children, you can rest assured that they are not party specific, and some of them are a lot more serious than this.

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 12:30:48

Obviously most of us try to bring up our children to be honest and have integrity.

Along with things like not taking drugs, not breaking the law, not abusing alcohol etc.

But, once they reach adulthood, ACs make their own choices - whatever we think.

I think people do worse things than Only Fans - including the offspring of many parents with honesty and integrity.

M0nica

No, she has not been cleared. The police have cleared her saying 'council tax and personal tax do not fall into the jurisdiction of policing'

She is still be being investigated by HMRC, this is the main enquiry, the police investigation as just a little something on the side.

She is not. HMRC have dropped the case - no case to answer!

ronib Thu 30-May-24 12:31:47

Yes very sadly Diane Abbott has had a terrible time with her son and I hope that they are both in a better place now. It isn’t easy bringing up children is it?

😂
Sour grapes? Why would someone be envious of a mother whose child is working in porn? Virtue signal alert - I am delighted that my children are also on meaningful and useful career paths grin. The difference is that I don't harbour resentment that they don't make their livings from pornography, which is what your 'sour grapes' comment is suggesting you are doing.

I am pleased that Mr Dog and I were able to provide a background that was a springboard to their being able to get on those paths, but I otherwise leave the credit for their hard work to them.

Why should AR's son's choices align with the values of the LP? You are making all sorts of allegations here that you aren't backing up at all. You are assuming that he is a member of the LP, and presumably that he has influence over their policies, but seem reluctant to provide evidence of this. You suggest that there is such a thing as 'family political choices', but again, haven't explained what this means. You have also suggested that porn sits somewhere on the left/right axis, but have ignored my request for clarification here, too.

A career in porn doesn't align with my values either, but I am capable of seeing that adults act independently of their parents. AFAIK, AR has not defended her son's choices in this regard.

I'm unsure as to what you think AR should do about this. 'Begging' her son to take down the site is unlikely to work. If it is illegal she could report him to the police, but if not I'm at a loss to know what she could do to please her detractors. Resign? Mark Thatcher wasn't a paragon of virtue either, was he? for what that's worth. His mother didn't resign, though.

I'm not sure what to say about someone's son's behaviour putting you off voting Labour, other than that it's not likely to make a huge difference to the result. If such a tenuous link to their policies is enough to dissuade you from endorsing the policies that do align with your values then you probably weren't considering the vote as seriously as you suggest.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 12:34:29

So often there are families with several children, when adults
they live completely different lives

ronib Thu 30-May-24 12:41:39

Doodledog how do you know how seriously I was considering my vote? Quite ridiculous

Not quite as ridiculous as claiming that the actions of an MPs adult child would be the issue that would put you off voting for a party though. Just be honest and admit you posted this information because it reinforced your prejudices.

ronib Thu 30-May-24 13:13:38

Casdon it’s completely pointless arguing about this. You won’t believe me and I simply don’t care.

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 13:21:06

I think, for me, it’s got to be about policies, and which party is best placed to try and sort out the chaotic mess we are currently living in.

I don’t really care too much what Rayner’s adults children do, and I care even less about Diane Abbott, and her continuing, confused dramas.

MissAdventure Thu 30-May-24 13:23:06

Does anyone know if it's actually true?
Fawkes' YouTube channel has nothing at all on there for the last month.

zakouma66 Thu 30-May-24 14:12:46

Parents can instil values and try their very hardest. Many, through absolutely no fault of their own, are struggling.

Young people have their own minds and ideas.

montymops Thu 30-May-24 14:13:08

Tax avoidance is legal - tax evasion is illegal.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-May-24 14:15:52

Yes, we know.

Seagull72 Thu 30-May-24 14:21:03

Wasting taxpayers’ money and police time. The media love all these petty dramas. The Tory MP that asked the police to investigate this was also responsible for Keir Starmer and “Beergate” fiasco. He should be held accountable for wasting police time and using it for propaganda reasons.
