Breaking news, just now.

So he’s looking for a safe seat!
Me, cynical?

The way I read it, he’s standing down as a Tory MP as a result of his defection to Labour, he was the Tory candidate for the election, is that correct?

Sorry, not sure if I’d made my question clear, so I’ve done a bit of googling and confirmed:
‘Mr Logan had been due to defend the seat in the general election, but after his shock defection, he hopes to become a Labour candidate in another constituency.’
From Yahoo news.

Diane Abbott looks very unwell in my opinion. I think she would do well to retire from all this stress and look after her health. However, I don’t suppose she wants any advice from me, or anyone else though.

On the way home from the cinema with my eleven year old grandson, the news came on the radio and Diane Abbott was mentioned. He said ‘Who is this woman?’ Even at eleven years old he’d become aware of her, since the media focus on her on every single news bulletin.

We saw IF. Definitely recommended as a lovely film for children, six years plus I would say, if anyone is searching for something to do with their grandchildren tomorrow.

A Tory MP has defected to Labour today:

He has joined the Labour Party, he is not intending to stand for Parliament again, just been interviewed on BBC news.

No. He just thinks Labour are the best bet. But, if he gets offered a seat, by Labour, it will be his decision.

I am sure she is. There are some very cross people in the left of the party, and Starmer is their bete noir.

Someone with Abbott’s best interests needs to care for her.

I’m sure that Mick Lynch, who advised his party members to vote for Brexit, loathes Starmer.

That would be kindest.

I’m beginning to wonder if Diane Abbott is being used by the activists on the far left to make trouble, which would be very unkind if she was in the process of negotiating a deal to retire which hadn’t concluded

Casdon I’m beginning to think the same thing myself. It’s all looking a bit sad.

She doesn’t seem herself, she’s uncomfortable when you watch her being interviewed, and I don’t get the impression that it’s anger.

Yes, I agree. She speaks about something, then changes her mind.

I think she’s being manipulated by those with an agenda.☹️

What Starmer is doing is to take Labour to the centre ground, that is clear from the way candidates are/have been chosen.

However, Labour has been a broad church and the left wing has always been a relatively vocal wing. I think that the different factions have in the past been quite well managed and I think Starmer would be better to deal with the issue with a more laid back approach.

Rayner said this afternoon, that she saw no reason why Abbott can’t stand for re-election.

However tbh I don’t think that she (Abbott) looks terribly well and perhaps the best thing would be to call it a day.

I agree. Abbott seems confused a lot of the time. She’s 70, so it could be a health issue. Retirement would seem to be a good option.

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 16:06:40

Unions have condemned Starmer for wanting rid of a far left
black woman. At the protest meeting yesterday Abbott spoke of being the first black woman MP, no mention of antisemitism

DiamondLily Thu 30-May-24 15:53:49

I don’t think anyone wants Abbott out because she’s black.

Starmer wants rid of what is seen as Corbynistas. Or those that support anti Semite tweets.

That’s why he ousted the very white Jeremy Corbyn.🙄

Anniebach Thu 30-May-24 14:55:19

Abbott has always played the racist card, seems now Starmer wants her out because she a left and black women,

Romola Thu 30-May-24 14:36:13

Why does the BBC keep wheeling out far-left Corbynites giving dire warnings to Keir Starmer about "paying a price" in the Diane Abbott sags?

maddyone Thu 30-May-24 11:14:42

Oh bless him ronib.
I also admit to dozing off during the children’s films on occasion GG.
It’s the fault of the cinema, they installed reclining seats!
At least the film will be marginally more interesting than whether Diane Abbott will or won’t stand for Parliament.

ronib Thu 30-May-24 11:06:00

GG13 my grandson objected to Garfield being abandoned by his father as a very young kitten. This is not right he said.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-May-24 10:51:35

maddyone I took my GS’s to The Garfield Movie yesterday, aged 4 and 9 they loved it.

(I admit to dozing off at one point 🤷‍♀️)
