Breaking news, just now.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 22:33:35

For me, the absolute ‘certainty’ with which the article is written is vile. The claim that ‘Abbot is being barred’ is conveyed as fact, when it’s nothing of the sort. The authors of this dangerous cr** knew exactly what they were doing!

Anniebach

Surely she knew of the mud thrown from the right wing press,
she must have known,

I genuinely think not in this case. They knew maximum distress and confusion caused by not arranging an interview with both her and the LP before publishing.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 22:16:14

The Times should check in further that due diligence has been done

Willow any newspaper that’s part of the Murdoch regime (which the Times is) does not know the meaning of due diligence.

If O/P's give references to sources we can check them.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 22:02:15

Agree Wyllow.

Yes Annie, I asked myself that question! Although, it appears lots of others believed it too, and look at the mess it’s caused today. What a world we’re living in!

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 21:58:49

If you look at the two authors tweets, they are all directed against the LP.

The Times should check in further that due diligence has been done. It not a red top.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 21:48:29

Why why did she believe it

I meant break not brake loose

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 21:47:46

How low can you sink in a mainstream newspaper.
Not even asking Abbot before printing. Malicious right wing attack.

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 21:45:40

Just re-read this morning’s front page Times article. It’s a complete work of fiction - absolute misinformation. We must stop believing MSM!!!

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 21:33:15

Reports on Wednesday suggested she had wanted to announce her own retirement but was caught off guard by a story in the Times saying she would be barred from standing for Labour

How interesting Wyllow. If that’s the case it would appear that Murdoch’s press has done its job - printing an inaccurate article on the front page of the Times which has caused problems for Labour. I’m sure the Murdoch empire is feeling very smug tonight.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 21:27:11

Poignant note in an article in the Guardian,

" Reports on Wednesday suggested she had wanted to announce her own retirement but was caught off guard by a story in the Times saying she would be barred from standing for Labour

So it appears that the Times article hit her out of the blue and accounts for her tweet this morning where she posts the Times front page and says she is "Barred".

(But it does also appear she assumed she would be restored to her position of MP automatically and thats why she kept on saying "Barred" leaving much confusion as to the meaning of that).

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 21:20:15

And if it is decided no, all hell will brake loose, she has made sure of it

I agree with you Casdon and I’ll rephrase what I said. I look forward to an announcement that Diane Abbott is on the shortlist of candidates for the constituency, unless of course she decides of her own free will to retire.

Yes, I think this is definitely the best solution for all.

Unless I am mistaken, she wants to be reinstated as sitting MP.

Their survival and pretty early on the survival of their children depend on keeping quiet.

Obviously that doesn’t make it right

There are all sorts of communities where women are silenced.

1. There was no begging

2. Many communities prefer single sex arrangements. Orthodox Jews for example.

She was basically pleading for their votes and you know very little about Orthodox Jews and, in any case, there are very few of them in the UK. Jews in general come to that!

Well how very wrong you are. I live fairly close to community of Orthodox Jews and work in the area. I know ( first hand ) that at the medical centre there is a separate entrance, purpose built for women. I know the women marry very ,very young. I know they have an entirely separate and much diminished schooling system for all . Girls leave education at around 12 years old.
I know that the families are very large and ponder as to how they support themselves.

It’s all about control by men. All of it, whatever fundamentalist stripe of religion. Extremes in anything in life are never good - physically or mentally. The women should challenge this orthodoxy and tell the men to do one. They won’t though. Brainwashing starts in infancy …

Casdon Wed 29-May-24 19:40:36

I don’t agree with the principle of that nightowl. Being an incumbent MP should not mean the seat is yours for as long as you want it. The decision should be made by the party and local constituency. Not all MPs remain capable, for many reasons, of doing their jobs competently in the long term.

Cossy I’ve just heard Diane Abbott on the radio saying she will remain the local MP for as long as possible. So given Keir Starmer’s statement I await confirmation that the LP accepts her as the Labour candidate for her constituency. It isn’t for them or anyone else to tell her when she should retire.

No, of course not, it’s just my personal opinion.

Cossy Wed 29-May-24 19:38:11

Allsorts

I never realised what a very attractive young woman Diane Abbot was.
She has got a lot of stick, sometimes as she stuck by J Corbyn justified. However, Labour have a very poor record with women they don't promote or support them enough. Why couldn't they just let Diane retire at her will? Think it’s been handled badly and it’s come over has a bit spiteful.

I simply cannot agree that the LP “have a very poor record with women” and that they are not promoted or supported enough!

1992 Betty Boothroyd - Lab first women speaker in HoC.

Harriet Harman
Mo Mowlem
Barbara Castle

There have literally been dozens of good, Labour female MPs well supported by the LP.

Actually nightowl its up to the L Party voters in that constituency

I’ve just watched said video.

A) the part shown was all about the awfulness of the Gaza situation.
B) I couldn’t see much of the room, there may well have been women there.
C) she wasn’t begging. She was open and compassionate about the situation.
