I’m pretty sure the reason why Sunak called the election was because he knew they were plotting to remove him.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 11-Jun-24 08:09:57

Is Sunak a post turtle?

DiamondLily Tue 11-Jun-24 07:42:29

Well, the latest rumours are that, if the polls don’t move, Sunak will be out.

How on earth the Tories think this will work, halfway through an election campaign, is unclear.

Before the election I should have added.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 11-Jun-24 06:29:19

I would not be remotely surprised to discover that if the polls don’t start shifting after the manifesto today that the Tories don’t start eyeing up the possibility of joining up with reform.

Yes, agreed! John Smith was probably the best PM we never had - sadlysad

Whitewavemark2 Mon 10-Jun-24 17:53:39

People of integrity and commitment

I liked John Smith and Tony Benn in particular.

Am I alone in remembering far left as those who wanted to nationalise everything? Blair got rid of Clause 4, so the party moved to the right. The far left produced some excellent MPs who believed in worker's rights, established and fought for a free NHS and decent education. They were dedicated and moral people. It's a pity there aren't more like them in the party today.
Let's remember
Aneurin Bevan
Barbara Castle
Tony Benn
Clare Short
John Smith
Robin Cook
All to the left of today's LP

But, but, but...

COMMUNISTS.... wink

Whilst I don’t wish to nationalise everything, nationalising our utilities was a disaster!

Ah yes. We had reasonable costs, were not pouring money into the pockets of investors, who always pass on price hikes but never price reductions.
Then there's water. The sea is full of sewage, so are many rivers. While investors have taken £85 Billion + out of 10 water companies.

But public ownership was dreadful????

Iam64 I have lost the will to debate after being castigated for giving my views (on a different thread). Apparently I get too ‘het up’.

So I’ve stepped back from the fray, but still enjoy following the views expressed by you and others (who perhaps don’t get quite so ‘het up’)smile

Well not het up but amazed that Sunak has said nothing on Braverman remaining a candidate after that.

Thank you for your very “kind” words.

I’ve never expected anyone to agree with me, and you’re talking nonsense about Rayner, a woman you clearly don’t like, which is absolutely fine.

I’m neither pompous nor in need of your false sympathy. “Poor you”.

Think if anyone comes across as “pompous” on this thread, it’s actually you.

I’m actually far more of a centralist, than “leftie”, but I simply cannot bear to have a further 14 years of utter turmoil such as this government has provided, so yes, I will be voting Labour at the GE.

I’m certainly not “Ill informed”, I take a great interest in politics and others views.

I’m not the one who referred to her as “rabid” left, and yes she’s very outspoken and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with challenging if you don’t agree with something.

This govt has done nothing but fall out with other and point the finger at each other at every opportunity.

I’m sorry you’re unable to express your own views or enter into debates without becoming personal and insulting.

Oo yes Maddyone I’m all for comfy knickersgrin

maddyone Mon 10-Jun-24 13:52:52

Very true Casdon. I didn’t think of that. It’s just that I don’t know the answer to the question. I guess we’ll all know after the election.

Now on the subject of comfy knickers…..

Casdon Mon 10-Jun-24 13:50:37

Remember that famous quote though maddyone
“If the world were good for nothing else, it is a fine subject for speculation.” (William Hazlitt)
It’s true, we all speculate about what’s going to happen, life would be very dull if we didn’t.

maddyone Mon 10-Jun-24 13:50:33

LizzyDrip you really can’t beat a pair of comfy knickers, can you?
Just wondering, should my comment be on the do you feel young thread? Anyway, I’m all for comfy knickers, and comfy everything else too.

maddyone Mon 10-Jun-24 13:37:53

I don’t know if that’s the way the Conservatives are heading. None of us do. We can speculate but we can’t know. For what it’s worth, I don’t think Nigel Farage will join with the Conservatives but I guess we’ll all have to wait until after the election and see what happens then. Pointless to speculate.

LizzieDrip Mon 10-Jun-24 13:34:01

thanks Thanks all - your words are really appreciated and I agree with your comments.

Knickers well and truly untwisted - it was very uncomfortable having ‘em twisted actually, so it’s a big reliefgrin

Loving the image of the parrot saying ‘bugger ‘em’ with a Yorkshire accent ‘*Glorianny*grin

WW and Cossy (and Tennyson) thanks for the moral boostthanks Much needed and appreciated.

We say ‘bugger ‘em’ in Yorkshire too!

Yes but with a Yorkshire accent. My great aunt living in London had a parrot that said it, and everyone knew who it was copying because of the accent.
