What on earth is it with the Tories!?

Yesterday we had the bizarre interview with the Tory chairman who answered completely different questions asked by th3 Sky reporter, who in the end gave up and stopped the interview.

Cleverly was just on BBC answering questions getting an easy ride for a few minutes, then he was asked a challenging question about how on earth they were going to pay for their proposed spend and he answered with waffle, then was challenged again and he said

“Sorry have to go I’m late for another appointment”

And he went😄😄😼

I hope the Tories carry on as they are doing right now, so that those people with short memories will only have to look at the appalling behaviour over these last few weeks to remind them just how little they care about anyone but themselves, or can be trusted to actually tell the truth rather than the lies, deceits, and dont forget the Boris version of laws. You make them for everyone else but dont think you have to comply with them and then lie about what you have been doing. Whatever they promise , we can all promise jam tomorrow , but tomorrow never comes. They know that they will not win so they can promise Pie in the Sky for the next 4 weeks they wont have to actually do anything! We are still waiting for the Levelling Up (ha ha !) well the levelling up was where we all paid money that all travelled down to the south east!

This article is a sad indictment of UK society 2024!

Sunak in the interview that he needed to leave the D Day commemorations for - talking about being deprived as a child and understanding how people struggle

“Of course I understand people’s struggle - we had to go without when I was a child - I couldn’t have Sky TV”

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:15:28

Rachel Johnson - not strictly a Tory.

Talking about the violence that people with a high profile face, like politicians.

“I was attacked in Sainsbury’s - and I thought Sainsbury’s - it isn’t even Lidl”

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:22:54

Reacting to Sunak’s Sky TV comment on SM.

Apparently sky didn’t become mainstream until Sunak was 14-15.

So the fact that he missed something as a “child”which didn’t exist is quite interesting.

ronib Wed 12-Jun-24 07:37:42

Wwm2 simple fact check Sunak’s dob 1980. Sky news first in UK in 1989. So as a boy of 9 years old, Sunak might have noticed that he was not as advantaged as some. His parents clearly watched their pennies? Or perhaps they didn’t value Sky News? Or both.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:47:38

Sky didn’t become “mainstream” for another 5 years.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:50:43

But you missed the point.

The fact that Sunak when talking about childhood deprivation, considered that lack of sky tv a good example - simply does my head in. To use the vernacular 😄

Pantglas2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:50:54

Eurosport was available on Sky in 1990 WWMK2 and maybe he was surrounded by boys into football and was envious?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:52:52

You are missing the point!!

We are talking about the U.K. prime minister spectacularly failing to understand what childhood deprivation really means!

Pantglas2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:57:11

Right
.and which previous PM did?

ronib Wed 12-Jun-24 07:57:57

Wwm2 even if Sunak had an in-depth knowledge of childhood deprivation and trauma, that would not stop it from continuing to happen.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 07:59:09

Pantglas2

Right
.and which previous PM did?

And that is relevant because?

Ramsay MacDonald was illegitimate and from a very poor background. He didn’t have to worry about TV though.

Couldn’t Winchester College afford it?

rosie1959 Wed 12-Jun-24 08:09:30

Sunak was obviously caught out by this question he obviously didn't have a deprived upbringing but it would have been simpler just to say so. He was just relating from his own experiences. His parents prioritised the childrens education and no doubt they would have had to cut down on things but not to the extent of deprivation.
He can still understand it without having experienced it

Whitewavemark2 Wed 12-Jun-24 08:17:28

As someone said on SM

Goodness knows what Sunak has done to piss the gods off

But it is not yet 8am and already we have the nonsense of sky tv, then his claim that D Day overran and now we hear that the economy is flatlining.

It is really time to throw in the towelđŸ„ș

LizzieDrip Wed 12-Jun-24 08:18:26

ronib & pantglass have you read the Guardian article above?

I’d have more respect for Sunak if he owned his privilege; acknowledged he had a very fortunate upbringing; and accepted that not having Sky TV as a child isn’t remotely comparable to not having food!

The statistics for child poverty cited in that article are some of the saddest things I’ve read. The way that food banks have become normalised in the UK is an utter disgrace.

And, I’d be saying the same whichever government was in power - blue or red! If this happened under a Labour government I’d be writing to the PM, as a member of the LP, to express my disgust!

Pantglas2 Wed 12-Jun-24 08:28:30

Thank you Casdon - I knew it had bin awhile!

Pure curiosity WWMK2! I got as far back as Wilson before I gave up!

Exactly.

I shall follow their progress minutely and will set a high bar as far as my expectations are concerned, in every aspect of their government (if they get in).

In fact I expect much more of a labour government.

The YouGov poll now shows Reform as only 1 per cent below the Conservatives. That should be enough to get some of the virtue signallers clutching hysterically at their pearls.

We live in interesting times.

What has happened to the extended family in the Uk? As a granny, my daughter in law will ask me to cook occasional meals when time constraints are tight. As a granny, I don’t mind. As a granny, I would help as much as possible to ensure that my grandchildren have enough food and clothing. In fact, recently I have found EBay a good source of children’s clothing. I know that childhood deprivation is a terrible experience but where’s the family in all of this?

Me too WW.

I know Labour (if they get in) won’t be able to ‘fix’ everything straightaway, but I will expect them to address the needs of children in poverty.

I think Labour supporters do tend to set a high bar, and we are ready to hold our politicians to account. We tend not to ‘slavishly’ follow.

Sunak's parents were successful immigrants who worked hard, this is to be applauded. Why on earth he, or his advisers thought it a good idea to dismiss this success and indulge in some sort if twisted "ooh we 'ad it 'ard" rip off of the 4 Yorkshire men sketch is beyond me. Just own how lucky you were, acknowledge you have no direct experience of deprivation, and move on.
