Labour and the Tories have disenfranchised me

I always vote. Even at our Parish Council elections. Like so many, I feel I have an obligation to those who fought so hard for me to have that basic right.

This time I feel completely disenfranchised as I have no desire to vote for any of them. I've recently moved from a constituency where the MP works tirelessly for the constituents and, I believe, goes the extra mile in supporting charitable and community projects and initiatives. I was happy to vote for him even if I was a bit disillusioned with his party line.

This time around, after thinking long and hard, I probably won't vote. It goes against everything I believe in and how I was brought up.

Maybe my thinking is naive, or just a way of justifying my decision, but I believe that by NOT voting I am showing my contempt at a broken political system and because of that contempt I CHOOSE not to vote and thanks to those who allowed me to have that choice.

It's like deciding whether I should vote for Jack the Ripper or Harold Shipman. angry

No' Siope.it was entirely because the numbers did not add up

Then why were there 5 or 6 days (maybe more, I can’t recall) of negotiations between the LibDems and Labour?

Siope Sun 16-Jun-24 22:40:57

I’m not, of course, suggesting that a progressive alliance would have been sustainable even in the medium term, but it was possible, and I think, would have been preferable (even more so with hindsight) to try.

Andrew Adonis who was involved with the coalition talks between Lib and Labour said Clegg was a closet Tory

Iam64 Mon 17-Jun-24 08:48:01

Clegg must have been a closet Tory as in coalition his party failed to oppose the bedroom tax. Once out of power, Clegg announced now they understood more about the serious problems it caused, they’d oppose.

I live in a leafy London suburb, and have had no leaflets, flyers or door knocking from any of them. Our long standing Tory MP (who was pretty good, locally) has resigned, but I would imagine it will be another Tory who wins.

I did, however, get a letter, from Sunak, (addressing me by my Christian name…aargh!), telling me why I should really appreciate all he’s done for me, and the country, and vote Tory lol

No chance.🙄

Davey questioned on the coalition said last week he was proud
of their years with the Conservative government

We haven’t had any leaflets through the door.

The only posters/placards round here so far are for the sitting Conservative MP.

Iam64 Mon 17-Jun-24 10:14:24

I heard him Anniebach. In fact I heard the manifesto launch as I was driving for over an hour. I began to feel embarrassed for Ed Davey, an over emotional man clearly out of his depth

Oreo Mon 17-Jun-24 13:21:18

What is it with the Lib Dems? They never get a good leader.

Wyllow3 Mon 17-Jun-24 13:26:14

Good question Oreo as we have some good people at a local council level. Maybe its because they have been out of Westminster power so long.

Anniebach Mon 17-Jun-24 13:36:24

Why oh why did Davey have to keep leaping around in a wet suit ?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 17-Jun-24 13:36:56

Ridiculous.

Anniebach Mon 17-Jun-24 13:43:30

He certainly is not of Olympic gold build silly man

Wyllow3 Mon 17-Jun-24 13:47:40

One stunt would have been enough...

Because of FPTP and the adversarial style of debates it's very difficult to get a decent idea of Lib Dem policies.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 17-Jun-24 13:49:46

He can’t expect to be taken seriously when he does such daft things.

Wyllow3 Mon 17-Jun-24 14:05:51

Well, millions are going to in the election but it was a silly way to start.

Casdon Mon 17-Jun-24 17:09:33

It doesn’t appear to be doing any harm to the LibDems chances, unless all the polls are wrong. I think they have a good chance of doing better than they have for years at this election - it’s a small investment for a big return if they get 50+ seats.

Iam64 Mon 17-Jun-24 17:39:25

Ok Casdon, good point. Rather the Lib Dem’s in a libdem-con marginal than Reform
I did hear a Monster Raving Loony manifesto promise. To put Doctors Receptionists in charge of the Border Force with the result nobody gets in.
Apologies for poor taste but ……

Casdon Mon 17-Jun-24 18:16:09

Iam64 grin

I might be the only one regarding the LibDems, but I think targeting specific seats is going to prove a very productive approach, because they can concentrate resources and time on those constituencies. Ed Davey is getting himself in the news however he can, he even had a TV style makeover apparently last week!

Wyllow3 Mon 17-Jun-24 18:20:35

I think thats true as regard targets here. Safe Labour seat - none of usual Lib Dem placards, they are concentrating on an adjoining seat, all out (against Labour).

Gave me the best laugh of the week, thanks for that.😂

Yes, it made me laugh too. We really need to find things to laugh about, so much makes me want to weep!

It didn't do Boris any harm and it is appealing to younger voters. Apparently he does follow up his antics with a related serious issue but that seems to get lost.

The Daily Star has come out and endorsed Binman:
National Service for former Prime Miniaters,
Water chiefs to swim in British rivers,
Croissant prices to be capped at £1.10.

It certainly has its attractions. I wonder if he is standing in my constituency.
