Smear Keir - desperate Tory tactics!

In a desperate attempt to reduce Labour’s influence, the Times is reporting that Tories are encouraging the PM to go after Starmer personally, with a smear campaign. It smacks of 13 year old bullies trying to put down the popular kid or as its known in America, Trump techniques. Would it encourage you to change your vote? After all Boris Johnson tried it!

Rock bottom and still drilling

This claim sounds more like an attempt to smear the Tories.

This doesn't bother me - all the parties are smearing each other all the time. Look at the adverts being used. We had a post on Saturday with a link to voting tactically to keep the Tories out. Nobody felt aggrieved with that.

I saw this statement on the times headlines today

It’s totally ridiculous to be honest

Smear campaigns at election time have been going on for as long as I have been voting.

Nothing new or original.

Aveline Mon 17-Jun-24 17:16:31

It's free for all smear fest! No point in watching the News or reading the papers. It's just snipe snipe snipe at each other.

LizzieDrip Mon 17-Jun-24 17:20:23

It won’t influence me one iota - I know exactly who I’m voting for. The Tories can smear away to their hearts’ content - just makes them look even more desperate!

ronib Mon 17-Jun-24 17:20:50

My postal vote arrived this morning. I filled in my vote and posted it back. Now I can forget all about it! Great!!

I know, but what I said is what I meant.

Cossy Mon 17-Jun-24 17:59:44

I meant ALL parties. I’m not interested in what they think about other parties, only their positive ideas and how it’s going to be funded!

This is an interesting reflection from James O’Brien on LBC about Sunak being urged to smear Starmer, what issues a smear might cover and why previous attempts haven’t worked. Really worth a watch.

It happens every GE time tho doesn’t it, one side issuing smears and threats about the other side, unless real substance or new info then nobody really gives a toss.

Casdon Mon 17-Jun-24 18:32:25

The Tories did it in the last election, with Jeremy Corbyn. I don’t recall him trying to smear them, he was kept busy dodging bullets from all-comers. It’s much harder to smear Starmer I suspect, he isn’t a soft target.

Oreo Mon 17-Jun-24 18:53:03

Remember the ‘evil eyes’ posters made to smear Blair? 😄 Didn’t work, he got into power easily.

henetha Tue 18-Jun-24 00:06:11

They are all as bad as each other in their desperate attempts to get power.

maddyone Tue 18-Jun-24 00:23:54

It doesn’t matter to me what they say about each. It won’t make me change my mind about any of them. This sort of thing has been happening during elections for donkeys years.

sassysaysso Tue 18-Jun-24 05:55:09

There is of course no need for Labour to smear the Tories as the horrors of the last 14 years of Tory government speak for themselves.

Curtaintwitcher Tue 18-Jun-24 06:59:16

I think it might have the opposite effect to that intended. It's true that Starmer keeps changing his stance on everything so called him 'Mr Flip-flop' is appropriate. However, personal attacks are juvenile and don't enhance the party doing the name-calling.

Me too!

meddijess Thu 20-Jun-24 11:12:59

Sorry - I posted in response to ronib's post saying that she had already posted her postal vote!

Zoe65 Thu 20-Jun-24 11:30:35

Certainly wouldn’t listen or watch anything posted by james o brian the biggest leftie ever known .

Lizzie44 Thu 20-Jun-24 11:47:37

Lies, smears and name-calling have always been a part of election campaigns. Candidates behave like children in the playground. Best ignored. Decide which Party represents the values and policies that you adhere to, ignore the personal attacks and smears, and most importantly go out and vote.
