Smear Keir - desperate Tory tactics!

In a desperate attempt to reduce Labour’s influence, the Times is reporting that Tories are encouraging the PM to go after Starmer personally, with a smear campaign. It smacks of 13 year old bullies trying to put down the popular kid or as its known in America, Trump techniques. Would it encourage you to change your vote? After all Boris Johnson tried it!

Cossy

I meant ALL parties. I’m not interested in what they think about other parties, only their positive ideas and how it’s going to be funded!

👏👏

After years and years of personal attacks on Boris Johnson, (and there are still people whose only line of defence when cornered is, well, it's not as bad as Boris) I am amazed Tories haven't attacked, legitimately, Starmer's lies about his support for Jeremy Corbyn.

Casdon Thu 20-Jun-24 12:22:34

They have tried eazybee, many times. However, it’s like comparing an amateur footballer to Ronaldo in terms of the harm done to the reputation of the party and the UK comparing Starmer to Johnson. One of the biggest problems for the Tory leadership at the moment is the very boringness of Starmer, people with clean reputations are hard to find these days. We don’t condemn every Tory MP who endorsed Johnson, or Truss for their misguided or foolish support, do we?

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Jun-24 12:27:28

He had to answer questions on that on LBC a couple of days ago easybee.
At an election it tends to be all hand on deck despite disagreements whichever party you are in. One commits to a party and tries to change it from within, and thats what has happened.

We no longer have to smear the Tories as they are busy doing it to themselves.

The latest round of sleaze has just hit the headlines along with possible insider trading which is a criminal offence.

Milest0ne Thu 20-Jun-24 12:30:31

We have just had a letter from our MP. He claims that if a labour MP is elected we will be subjected to left wing politics from the local council in the neighbouring constituency to which our town is joined as a council area but not a parliamentary constituency.
I hope you understand the reasoning because it sounds like desperation to me

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Jun-24 12:32:43

Casdon
a valid point.

Two gambling probes -

(LBC)
“The Conservative party has been engulfed in a election betting scandal after one of its candidates and her husband are being investigated over a bet relating to the timing of the general election.
Tory candidate for Bristol North West Laura Saunders and the party’s director of campaigning Tony Lee are currently being looked into by the Gambling Commission”.

They can smear as much as they like, we have just filled in our postal ballots. As far as I’m concerned it’s an election free zone in this house and I am thankful for that.

Whatever happened to politicians that you could actually believe and respect, those who went into politics for the good of the country? Or was I just extremely naive in my youth?

brummie Thu 20-Jun-24 12:56:56

Starmer has smeared himself by aiding and abetting the genocide and forced famine in Palestine. Plus he plans to continue sending weapons to Israel. He has been proved to be a liar on multiple occasions. His MP in Putney has openly lied as well - and she did that in a church!

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Jun-24 13:05:29

As someone always politicly active I think that there was a great deal in the past we never found out as SM was not active. Much was hidden that comes out now. Especially those social media comments from the past that turn up.

I still believe and respect many politicians, certainly not all. But no point in being an idealist - it takes a certain kind of character to cope with the flack. All have flaws, but we all do.

sorry, but you were extremely naive in your youth! Having said that, most candidates, of all parties do, I think enter into politics with the best of intentions, but something happens when they get to Westminster and the daily plotting, scheming and working of the House. the difference is that we now find out, whereas previously, the owners of the newspapers (our only source of information), had their own interests in mind. Now, we have social media and the wonderful world of GN to keep us informed!

How on earth do you work that one out?

Bizarre.

Both Labour and Conservative are pro a cease fire and an ultimate two state solution.

My postal vote arrived this morning. I filled in my vote and posted it back. Now I can forget all about it! Great!!

My daughter is working abroad and has asked me to do a proxy postal vote for her. The council have stated that postal votes will not be posted to me till 26th June, when received I must fill it in and post it back. The postman/woman allocated to my road doesn't like doing it and we are lucky to get a delivery once a week, so my daughter who has strong political views is very likely going to be unable to vote at all.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 20-Jun-24 13:18:19

A comment on the radio this morning

“I wasn’t shocked by yet more sleaze from the Tory party, but I was amazed to hear that they have a director of campaign”

😄😄

Oreo Thu 20-Jun-24 13:22:27

Smearing by either side isn’t needed, it’s becoming more obvious how landslide to Labour will be even bigger than thought.

Polly7 Thu 20-Jun-24 13:38:45

Only one of the 2 at least has real heart in its place

It would be better if political parties were not allowed to make remarks about other parties but instead focus on their own policies.

Mojack26 Thu 20-Jun-24 14:00:38

Don't actually care they're all as bad as each other! Promise the earth and never deliver, it's all about what the 'other party' can't do! They all lie!

LizzieDrip Thu 20-Jun-24 14:14:05

That’s outrageous misdeke.

Surely your postal delivery shouldn’t be down to whether the post person ‘likes doing it’ or not. If there’s post to be delivered, they should deliver it!

I’d be on the phone complaining to Royal Mail and, if necessary, the Electoral Commission. Your daughter’s right to vote should not be decided by the whims of a post delivery person!

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Jun-24 14:20:57

I'd definitely be ringing my LA about this, as your daughter will not be the only one affected.
Postal votes have gone out later than usual, but I live in a city and good enough timing.

Absolutely. Just had my new Labour Councillor knock on my door, when I questioned him about starmer recognising Palestine, he waffled, when questions asked about tuition fees, he told me it was the Tories that brought them in, it was Blair, private schools, he said we had to get extra nursery money from somewhere.
He wanted me to vote for a chap who I'd never heard of, when reading the leaflet he was more interested in the towns 20 odd miles away, since boundary changes we've lost our sense of belonging to our nearest town, 2 miles down the road. He was arrogant and pushy, said it was a two horse race, if I voted for anyone else it would let the Tories back in, I said I'd heard it was the other way around. He wasn't amused, thanked him shut the door, leaflet in the bin. I will not be told, by anyone, who to vote for.
