Child poverty is overwhelming teachers & GPs!

Teachers and GPs are ‘staggering’ under extra demands caused by poverty in Great Britain
This is the headline of today’s Guardian which published a Joseph Rowntree Foundation report stating teachers and GPs in England, Scotland and Wales are informally acting as emergency food providers, welfare advisers, housing officers and social workers alongside their day jobs, as they devote more and more time and resources to support struggling parents and children.
- Primary school staff estimated 48% of their pupils, and primary care staff 57% of their patients, had experienced hardship at some point since the start of the school year or over the past 12 months.
- A third of schools, and nearly half of GP surgeries, had set up food banks to provide emergency food supplies to hungry pupils and families. Staff in schools in deprived areas estimated 44% of pupils had come to school hungry over the past year.
The article also highlights that the Tory manifesto plans to cut £12 bn from benefit spending which many of the families of these children rely on.
Many people will vote for the Tories on July 4th - seeking to achieve what? Yet more child poverty?

too many mohers get nails done hair dyed pink BEFORE buying food. When they do buy food it is junk (the plea i cannot afford fruit and veg is rubbish. They need to learn to cook and stop ordering deliveroo etc

You are so out of touch and such an insulting and ignorant comment.

People using foodbanks, includes a large percentage of working people, people like nurses and Primary School Teachers. Rents, fuel and energy costs are so high now.

You really have no idea!

I feel ashamed and embarrassed by some of the GNs comments attitudes on this thread. I seriously hope a) your situation takes a more positive turn and b) you’re not too offended by some people’s comments!

Thank you for drawing my attention to this. Perhaps you could supply their names and addresses so that I can visit them and teach them how to behave properly.

Or is this a generalization based on reading the red tops?

To for the uninformed; the number of people working who have to claim benefits has risen. This is because many people cannot survive on the minimum wage nor can they manage when their job has zero hour contracts. This is before they have to cope with rising rents.
I really think that people read less of the Daily Mail and listened less to politicians who blame everybody else.
Kindly do some research before making judgemental comments as it just show your ignorance.

This is such a complicated area. The thing is, running a family to a decent standard, even with two parents, is more demanding than ever. Not everyone has the personal resources of energy and organisation to do it, even if there is adequate money. Add in ill heath and emotional upheaval, be it breakdown of the relationship or worries about children, it's amazing that so many manage it.

fathers need to step up to the plate and provide for their children. I knew real poverty as a child but we always ate because my dad worked all hours to provide for us and my mother knew how to make very cheap meals. My parents knew how to parent and never relied on the state

So do you really want our grandchildren and future generations to live in “real” poverty!

yaiyai Wed 19-Jun-24 12:51:48

Cosy, true it isn’t the child’s fault. On the other hand, our benefits system is not teaching them the work ethic. I speak from personal experience of poverty. It might be better to reduce benefits for those with several children and divert the money to ensure they get a breakfast and school dinner.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Jun-24 12:59:25

jenpax, how can you possibly come to that conclusion from karmalady’s post? Her meaning could not be clearer.

Who would have thought that we would ever be discussing child poverty in the UK? I hope that the next government will prioritise this issue and reintroduce measures such as the Sure Start system. Meanwhile, as witnessed by many posts on here, there is far too much knee-jerk judgment and not enough compassion.

Altyann Wed 19-Jun-24 13:41:40

In my experience is the parents lack of personal responsibility. Having a brood they know they can't afford and choosing to not work or only part time. Why should the responsible who have 2 children because that's what they can afford pay extra tax to pay for someone else 3rd 4th and 5th

MaizieD Wed 19-Jun-24 14:17:42

As the British population is not even replacing itself at the moment....

The total fertility rate (TFR) decreased to 1.49 children per woman in 2022 from 1.55 in 2021; the TFR has been decreasing since 2010.

....perhaps we should be glad that some people are still producing more potential workers/taxpayers for the future...

EEJit Wed 19-Jun-24 14:18:45

How many of these parents smoke, drink, have Sky TV, drive a car, go out regularly?

Agree wholeheartedly with GSM’s comments. I also can’t comment as they would be deleted.

What Jan1956 says is correct. I have seen this on so many occasions. I saw a young Mum with 3 kids buying them all take out pre packed sandwiches which cost her nearly £16! What a total waste of money.

I know defenders of people who can’t budget will say “maybe it’s a treat”or “maybe she is in temporary accommodation with no cooking facilities”. She has a house and lives in our village.

8 slices of bread, some cheese/ham/egg and some butter wouldn’t be anywhere near£16.

Cateq Wed 19-Jun-24 17:11:23

Most of dads I know with a large number of children are mainly non catholic, my sil Db has about 8 kids to 3 different woman and he’s one of most bigoted people I’ve ever met. His 1st wife wouldn’t stay in the same room as my Dh because he is catholic

Farzanah Wed 19-Jun-24 17:17:14

Don’t poor and struggling people deserve some occasional treats too, to make life worth living, or should they dress in sackcloth and eat lentils?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Jun-24 17:21:27

Parents don’t deserve treats at the expense of their children. I have been sufficiently badly off to have chosen to feed my child instead of myself, thanks to his father. The child should always come first.

You could really say 9/10 years for Conservative government to get things done as the last term has been dealing with the fallout from Covid, Brexit and Ukraine. In their early years in power there was a financial worldwide meltdown.
Am no apologist for the Tories but the truth should still be stated.
So, yeah seriously I think certain things would be better done cross Party, the very least being the NHS and social care.
The Labour Party would need three clear terms and no wars, world financial troubles and nothing else like Covid to come along in order to fix the many problems. Is that likely you must ask yourself?
Keir Starmer will do his best but isn’t a miracle worker and will have to fight off the extreme within the Party as well as all the usual things that life will throw at any country from time to time.

Brexit was a self inflicted crisis by the Tories as has been the after math! Covid was mismanaged as can be seen by the PPE scandal and the parties at number 10 so the only aspect which is not down to them is Ukraine!

zakouma66 Wed 19-Jun-24 17:59:00

I believe some parents enjoy a treat with their children.

Fancy that!

Do you know this for a fact? Or are you quoting the crap churned out by the Daily Mail😡

albertina Wed 19-Jun-24 18:04:40

Many years ago I was accused by the snotty secretary at the Primary School I worked at that I was thinking of myself as Mother Theresa. So many children arrived at school every morning hungry that I organised breakfast cereals and milk for them. She didn't like it. To her mind, a problem child was one whose Range Rover wouldn't start in the morning.

This problem is far from new but it is getting much much worse and, frankly, it's breaking my heart.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Jun-24 18:06:45

Fine if the children have been properly fed and clothed and the bills paid. A treat doesn’t have to cost money. It can be a simple picnic or even spending time playing games.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 19-Jun-24 18:08:33

That was to zakouma.
