Yesterday was the best weather for ages. 822 immigrants arrived on rubber dinghies yesterday. Who knows how many today and in the next few weeks if the good weather continues.

French Police seem to do nothing other than watch and take photos. 😢

I support controlled immigration too. One and a half million people in two years is not controlled though, and is far too high.
Thousands coming across in boats is not controlled either.

It’s an intolerable situation.
Several hundred arriving every day, all having to be accommodated, fed, medically treated if necessary, all at our expense.

There is hope though now there has been a move to the Right in Europe, fuelled it is said by increasing frustration with the illegal migrant situation affecting so many countries.
I have always said that the only way to tackle this is for every European country to work together to prevent them gaining a foothold in Europe in the first place.

Unfortunately though it looks as if we are about to have a Left wing government with no intention whatsoever of cutting migration.

You’re pleased that there is a move to the right in Europe? This isn’t right of centre but proper right. Is there not a lesson to be learned from history here?

Skydancer Thu 20-Jun-24 11:39:52

Governments throughout Europe need to get a grip on this otherwise we will be in the same mess as the mess that the immigrants are leaving behind. Surely part of the answer is to help the countries they are fleeing from. Young men need jobs and hope and they are leaving countries where they have neither. Unfortunately wars and climate change will also force people to flee their homes and try their luck elsewhere. Yes of course they are human beings. We all recognise that. But they cannot expect a small country such as ours to solve their problems. And to those who say we have always had immigration - yes of course we have but it has been slow and gradual unlike the current situation.

Cossy, how can anyone possibly know if someone arriving here on a boat and without papers has a history of criminality? We are only likely to find out when they reoffend here, by which time it’s too late.

As Oreo says, most of the men come from cultures where the norm is to use and abuse women.

How can so many, mainly single young men, possibly become integrated into the UK, self-supporting and contributing members of our society, which is alien to them? Wait and see how many more arrive today, tomorrow, every day whilst the weather is calm. It’s an impossible situation which will not be solved by Starmer’s plan to have a beefed up border force.

They are not in need of compassion. They are paying thousands to come here from a safe country .

Quite.
I’ve said it before and am willing to say it again, although I’ll doubtless be told how heartless I am. We have:
Insufficient housing
Insufficient GPs
Insufficient dentists
Insufficient access to medical care
Insufficient roads (overcrowd roads)
Insufficient water as soon as the sun shines for three weeks
A black hole, only set to get larger we are told, in our finances

Where are we supposed to put them? Along with the three quarters of a million people arriving legally, some of whom are desperately needed, but others who are not. We don’t need the dependents of students for example.

Our services cannot cope with 800 people arriving each day, almost all young men, and so in desperation we put them into hotels. One of the huge hotels on the seafront where I live is full of asylum seekers. It’s been closed for normal trading for several years now. When we go for a walk along the seafront we see them, sitting around on the many benches, usually on their mobile phones. To be honest, they must be bored rigid. Labour say they will process them quicker and that will solve the problem. But it won’t because we’ll still have a shortage of all the facilities listed above.
The first duty of a government is to protect and provide for its own population.

We’ll said….👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The lack of compassion amongst our community of GNs is shocking and sometimes born of fear and ignorance.

This current govt must be laughing g all the way to the bank with their divisive tactics. They have caused this, yet all I hear is “Labour will open the floodgates”

For goodness sake, when are you going to own up to the fact that this particular Tory govt have caused much misery and wasted many many millions of £££££ during their tenure.

👏👏👏

I hear received bigotry and Farageism. Similar to 1930's Germany.
This appalling government have a great deal to answer for, but up go the smokescreens and it works - blame the immigrants.

I have taught English to some of these very young immigrants and would rather be accused of “misguided compassion’’ rather than sending them back to the poverty or oppressive regimes from which many of them came

Many in poverty here, including 2nd generation immigrants, wonder where they can escape too. Illegal immigrants aren't in poverty if they , or their families, are able to keep finding money for transportation to the UK.
In most countries you can apply for work visa for UK, including Nigeria, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Ghana etc, wonder why they don't.? Many do, including my neighbours, both working.
This input is unbalacing our population, . In 2023 72.2 % of people here, from outside the UK and Europe, were unemployed, so how can they benefit the UK and how can this be allowed to continue. As it will under Labour, same as the Conservatives. There are already culture clashes between the different ethnic minorities, a disaster for our country, , as they bring their baggage with them.

Rubbish.
I blame governments and the illegal migrant problem. It doesn’t have to be either /or.
It’s a huge problem for all European countries and the failure of their governments to deal with this mass illegal migration is what’s driving change. It’s nothing like 1930’s Germany as Jews were blamed who already lived there and were German!

Oh dear, some people really don't like the truth and then resort to insults to hide the fact.

Nobody knows if the Rwanda plan will work or if it is as bonkers as some claim.
However some migrants have turned up in Ireland and have stated it’s specifically to prevent them being deported to Rwanda, so it looks like the deterrent element is working.

Interestingly too, a number of EU countries are also looking at processing their illegal migrants in an offshore island or country.

Rishi Sunak has stated that his ultimate plan is to accept a certain number of migrants containing skills and qualifications we need here, and in addition allow a set number of those genuinely escaping persecution. When that set number is reached, no further applicants will be accepted.

Surely nobody can complain about that common sense plan.

But the people on boats aren't always coming from the countries where it's possible to apply for a work visa. The top two origin countries of asylum seekers in the UK in 2023 were Afghanistan and Iran.

People seeking asylum make up a very small percentage of immigrants to the UK. The majority do have visas, so why haven't those numbers been controlled?

Other countries, including the UK, didn't want Jews from Europe, despite the very real threats.

Rishi and his party have had FOURTEEN years to find policies and processes to control our borders and immigration of every kind.

Immigration of every kind has risen alarmingly in those last fourteen years.

I agree 100% with GSM.

My feelings towards these incomers are well known.

Been watching on Sky how the Greeks and the Mexican immigration people deal with them. We could learn some lessons there. We are too soft.

Are you advocating murder?

JenniferEccles Thu 20-Jun-24 15:11:57

That is true Cossy but attempts to control the numbers arriving have been thwarted at every turn by the Left, politicians, Left leaning lawyers and, frankly, daft Christian clergy who have been fooled by those claiming to have converted to Christianity to avoid deportation.

And the much larger percentage who come here by legal means?

I thought Brexit was supposed to be the solution to all of these problems …
confused?

Cossy Thu 20-Jun-24 15:36:26

Really!

* Since January 2023 there have been 28 cases heard at the Upper Tribunal in which a claimant cited conversion to Christianity as a reason to be granted asylum, about 1 per cent of cases heard in the period. Of those, seven appeals were approved, 13 were dismissed and new hearings were ordered in eight cases.*

Oh not again! When Conservatives came to power Blair and co had already opened the gates to anybody who wanted to come. Do you honestly think they could just stop them again?

Everything they have tried to do they have been stopped from doing by do gooders and lawyers. The immigrants even complain when they are housed in hotels, barges etc because they say that’s not good enough and their supporters encourage them.

Greta Thu 20-Jun-24 16:25:59

Yes, who can forget the Brexit mantra "Take Back Control? What Brexit did achieve was that many skilled EU citizens who were actively contributing to the UK economy decided to go back home. But oh - they left a gap in the market. Who could have guessed...

Casdon Thu 20-Jun-24 16:33:24

There were 685,000 net migrants to the UK in 2023. There were 52,530 recorded entries through illegal or irregular routes for the 12 months ended June 2023 (nearest comparable figures I could find).
In 2009, the last full year of Labour government, there were 169,000 migrants. Labour policy from 15 years ago is not the problem.
