If anyone thinks economic migrants, having paid exorbitant amounts to criminals should be here I’m afraid I disagree, send them back even if they have thrown their passports away. Let them sort things out for themselves. Why not destroy the boats or LILO’s before they leave France, it’s so stupid.

Better weather = many more immigrants 822 yesterday
(299 Posts)Yesterday was the best weather for ages. 822 immigrants arrived on rubber dinghies yesterday. Who knows how many today and in the next few weeks if the good weather continues.
French Police seem to do nothing other than watch and take photos. 😢

I doubt any of us is ignorant, but some of us want to see an end to uncontrolled immigration and those who have come here illegally returned or sent to Rwanda.
I think most of us would agree that Immigration of all types needs controlling, that if Asylum Seekers are able to come legally their claims are processed efficiently and that a mechanism is in place to send those not meeting the criteria for sending them to a safe destination.

Those coming from Vietnam are economic migrants and should be sent straight back.
Like Sunak's parents, Braverman's parents, Badenoch's? Pritti Patel? Zahawi? (at least he had the good grace to admit that he is thankful for the sanctuary and good education he received here. Sad he repaid it the way he did)
Or, are Tories from successful migrant families ok?
Governments don’t build houses. Nor do they make the land on which they are built, of which there is a finite supply. I am very familiar with planning laws, which are constantly blamed and always considered ‘in need of reform’. Developers are required to build a certain number of affordable homes on a private development. Despite the claims to the contrary, they usually comply with that obligation and housing associations buy the units. However, private buyers don’t want to live next to the social housing, especially if it’s rented, and who can blame them? Do we want to build large ghettos of affordable housing which will become the ‘no go’ council estates of the future? Politicians say what people want to hear. Does anyone have any idea how many homes need to be built to house all those currently homeless, families splitting up and the unrelenting stream of immigrants, legal or illegal? Or where it might be built so as to be sustainable - ie easy access to public transport and facilities? Or is sustainability to be foregone?
I live in a cul de sac of owner occupied housing, private rented housing and housing association housing. I'm very happy here and, as far as I know, everybody else is happy here too.
"Affordable" housing doesn't have to turn into ghettos.

There are many rented houses and flats in my road, we own our house, but all of our neighbours look after their homes and I have no issue whether my neighbours rent, buy or live in a housing association house so long as they are good neighbours.

Badenoch's parents have never lived in the UK. She admitted that her mother flew to London, so that she was born in the UK, which at the time gave her entitlement to British citizenship.

It does indeed need to be properly controlled wwm. In the past we have seen immigrants such as the Huguenots with their skills, and Jews who have been entrepreneurial and transformed the rag trade - and where would showbiz be without them? People from India and Pakistan are invaluable in the NHS and as shopkeepers, as well as having been a vital source of labour in the northern mills years ago. Poles are renowned as hard workers. The Irish built our railways, canals and roads. But nowadays we have thousands of single young men arriving from many countries with who knows what, if any skills and willingness to work - with unknown histories and from cultures which are very different from our own, where women are repressed, used and abused. They are not the immigrants of yesteryear.
Lot of stereotypes there!
Having grown up in a council house I feel quite strongly about this. Times were different then. Everybody in our Close kept their large gardens beautifully, hedges cut etc. very few had cars so grass verges outside were pristine. The rent man came round fortnightly and reported any properties that looked untidy or neglected. Residents were all local people.
Now people from anywhere can make a bid on a property, families might have a couple of cars so they park on the grass verges and gouge great tracks out of them.
My niece lives in a shared ownership property, 3 bed detached which is lovely. There are private houses too and housing assoc. ones. At the end are two beautiful 4 bed detached HA houses and in just a couple of years they look dreadful. Old bikes, pallets and other junk thrown outside, broken blinds at the windows, overgrown gardens, old cars outside etc. if these houses were private they would sell for £700,000 but people don’t realise how fortunate they are to get them. No respect like years ago.

Sales of rubber boats, outboard motors, etc, have been restricted around coastal areas in France.
The French police frequently put a knife in the ones they get hold off.
The criminal thug element order them online. Or even steal them from further afield.
And they (the criminal thugs) are very good at finding secluded areas away from the police prying eye from which to launch. They move their 'launchings' around and seem to be able to outwit the police.
Of course, the police cannot be manning the coastline in huge numbers because there aren't enough of them. Even though they've doubled the numbers patrolling the north shore.
That's why you will sometimes see photo's of immigrants in boats sailing off with the police watching them. What you don't see is the fact that they've just become visible to the police because they've been hiding behind a rocky outpost. And, once they are actually in the water, there's little the police can do - the boats are too far out for them to wade to, and any other action, like shooting holes in the boats would be a criminal offence. Both under maritime and civil law, I suspect.
I don't think it's as easy as people seem to think it is when they say, "why don't they just do this / that / or the other. Not on around 150 km of coastline.
Policing anyway can only, really, ever be part of the solution. IMO.
I agree with GSM no private builder is going to get building unless it is to his financial benefit we have a parcel of land near us which first had planning permission nearly 50 years ago, the land was not developed at all until last year.
It’s both HPQ. The government has mismanaged this situation terribly, and deliberately allowed so many legal migrants to come because they think they help the economy. Theoretically they should, but sadly that’s not happened. However we do have many more carers and healthcare workers who we desperately need so I’m glad they’re here at least. What we don’t need are the thousands of migrants coming in small boats each year, who are costing us millions of pounds every day.

Agree . I was brought in a council house, we had lovely neighbours and lived out in the countryside. All the families looked after their garden, kids were taught not to leave their tops all over the road
I bought my little house in a lovely cul de sac, and along with my neighbours kept it clean, tended front gardens.
Unfortunately , either side of me, sold , now have tenants in, seem nice people, but oh goodness the mess, overgrown gardens, shoes and toys left all over the front, weeds escaping into my frontage as not being cut back , washing hung over bushes. What a nightmare. We are all sick of it, but what can you do, landlords don't care as long as they get their rent money. Keep doing the Lottery.!!!

dear me, people from India and Pakistan are in the NHS or shopkeepers? really? Aren't they lawyers, home makers, window cleaners, shop assistants?
Historically there was an influx of workers to Northern Mill towns.
I know a very lazy Polish person.
How on earth can you presume that the much reviled " young men" dont have skills and that the women are repressed.
I can tell you from first hand experience, that the repressed woman trope just isn't true at all.
Open your mind.
I know a very lazy Polish person
Course you do!
These young men you describe zakouma66 cannot prove they are qualified in anything because they have destroyed their paperwork. Their bad luck!
If their women are not repressed how come they cannot sit in the same rooms in their mosques? How come they have to trot along behind their husbands when they’re out?
How come in this hot weather the men go out in cargo pants and vests and the women are swathed, head to toe in metres of cloth.
Cossy
Let’s try not to be personal on here please, GSM and I often disagree, but both of us are decent people, we are just at opposite ends of the political spectrum, but I’ll wager we have other things in common. I know we both care animals, dogs especially.
Let’s not let politics or religion get in the way of decent debate and civil comments.
We all feel strongly about certain issues. We all have the right to express ourselves without fear or resorting to snide remarks.
I totally understand how easy it is to get upset.
Enjoy your weekend folks
Hmmm, yes we certainly do have the right to express ourselves without rudeness don’t we Cossy.
I don’t expect any more personal attacks on me after reading what you just wrote.
I was going some positive examples zakouma. Do you expect an exhaustive dissertation? Some of the young men arriving in boats may have skills - what of the rest? And don’t tell me that none of them come from countries where women are not repressed. You may be sufficiently fortunate not to have experienced the way men treat women in their countries of origin. Many are not so fortunate and that is the treatment they can expect here if they have the misfortune to form a relationship with some of these illegal immigrants.
I only ever see young Men on these boats, very few Women and Children. Mostly coming from France which is not a war torn Country. Why is the Government allowing this to happen on a daily basis ? Apparently Turkey has a massive hand in enabling them to get here. The French are doing nothing to stop them even though we pay them a massive amount. Where is our Navy to protect our shores from this invasion ?

GSM was using examples and while stereotyping it’s still true that Indian and Pakistani small shopkeepers have saved the corner shop from vanishing all over the UK and the same in the NHS along with members of the Windrush generation.
We don’t know what skills illegal immigrants bring with them but we don’t want all the thousands of them weekly who have no papers or proof of who they are.We have legal immigrants here to do jobs already.

They could just get a flight to Mexico, Biden is just letting them enter to get votes!
What kind of nonsensical comment is this???!!!
oreo Fair play and fair comment.
I’ll take a deep breath next time you post something offensive and remember it’s not directed at me!

Goodness!
I think, I may be wrong, that many people have posted why the RN are not involved.
Turkey have taken shedloads of refugees, but also have a very unstable economy and some borders with very dubious countries.
I don’t know why this govt has allowed this to go on so long and why it gets worse by the day, why don’t you ask the PM?
