Yesterday was the best weather for ages. 822 immigrants arrived on rubber dinghies yesterday. Who knows how many today and in the next few weeks if the good weather continues.

French Police seem to do nothing other than watch and take photos. 😢

I was going some positive examples zakouma. Do you expect an exhaustive dissertation? Some of the young men arriving in boats may have skills - what of the rest? And don’t tell me that none of them come from countries where women are not repressed. You may be sufficiently fortunate not to have experienced the way men treat women in their countries of origin. Many are not so fortunate and that is the treatment they can expect here if they have the misfortune to form a relationship with some of these illegal immigrants.

Just out of interest, which countries in particular are you referring to which oppress their women?

Chestnut
and don’t forget sewage
That subject is something I do know about. My son in law is in recruitment. One client is the owner of a company that operate sewage plants.
The amount of processing doesn’t tally with the population numbers.

These young men you describe zakouma66 cannot prove they are qualified in anything because they have destroyed their paperwork. Their bad luck!

If their women are not repressed how come they cannot sit in the same rooms in their mosques? How come they have to trot along behind their husbands when they’re out?

How come in this hot weather the men go out in cargo pants and vests and the women are swathed, head to toe in metres of cloth.

Wow, just wow.

Is having a relationship with an "illegal" immigrant different from having a relationship with a legal immigrant?

I guess so because with a legal immigrant you would know something about them. Illegal immigrants, you know nothing about them because they destroy their ID etc. they could be rapists, murderers, criminals and you have no way of checking also a lot of them spin a good yarn.

Let’s start with those at the top/ near the top of the official figures of where these ( mostly men) come from.
Iran
Sudan
Afghanistan

What decent English woman in their right mind would want to form a relationship of any kind with an illegal immigrant?

Afghanistan

I don't know if this helps but my female friends who are Sudanese engineers, don't strike me as repressed.

Seriously, some of the stuff on here is off the radar crazy.

It does indeed need to be properly controlled wwm. In the past we have seen immigrants such as the Huguenots with their skills, and Jews who have been entrepreneurial and transformed the rag trade - and where would showbiz be without them? People from India and Pakistan are invaluable in the NHS and as shopkeepers, as well as having been a vital source of labour in the northern mills years ago. Poles are renowned as hard workers. The Irish built our railways, canals and roads. But nowadays we have thousands of single young men arriving from many countries with who knows what, if any skills and willingness to work - with unknown histories and from cultures which are very different from our own, where women are repressed, used and abused. They are not the immigrants of yesteryear.

dear me, people from India and Pakistan are in the NHS or shopkeepers? really? Aren't they lawyers, home makers, window cleaners, shop assistants?
Historically there was an influx of workers to Northern Mill towns.
I know a very lazy Polish person.

How on earth can you presume that the much reviled " young men" dont have skills and that the women are repressed.

I can tell you from first hand experience, that the repressed woman trope just isn't true at all.

Open your mind.

Perhaps you should visit Concern Worldwide and Global citizen. It'll open your mind.

I don't know whether you followed the demonstrations in Iran a few months ago, but there were men demonstrating to support the women. Some of them were arrested and punished and, no doubt, have their cards marked by the authorities.

MayBee70 Fri 21-Jun-24 19:35:59

But the Taliban only took over because we left the country and its people to them. And many of the people trying to escape from Afghanistan are doing so because they helped us and are now persecuted because of it. We totally deserted them.

Just checked. Seven men were executed in Iran for supporting women protesting against the morality police.

maddyone Fri 21-Jun-24 19:57:28

Do you really need a list?
There are a huge number of countries where men oppress women. Many, many countries in Africa. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Soudi Arabia, Gaza, and I could go on.
Obviously not every man oppresses his wife, but many, many do. That’s why we see women totally covered up and walking behind their husbands, even in this country. There are women in Britain who are abused by their menfolk. Murders of girls who try to exercise control over their own lives is common in many countries, but not unknown here in the UK.

Quite correct, and well done to those men.
But out in the sticks in Iran, men still stone women to death.

I wish those involved in organising these boats and dinghies were not continually referred to as "people smugglers" - articles in the media about them sometimes read more like an Enid Blyton novel (Five Go To Smuggler's Cave).

These individuals are involved in forgery, they are vicious, violent thugs - not averse to intimidation and threats of (and actual) assault on those on whom they've imposed an extortionate fee, if they show hesitation or ask questions.

They aren't the root cause of the migrant crossings, but they are cold-blooded, ruthless, opportunists who don't give a fig for the consequences of their trade in human traffic, neither their 'customers' nor their host countries.

They put people in dinghies that are not seaworthy - they can buy them cheap, second-hand - without life jackets.

And it's a lucrative 'business'.

According to the BBC who interviewed Europe's most-wanted smuggler - they can charge £6 thousand per person. If nearly 30,000 migrants attempted the crossing in 2023 - well, you work it out.

IMO they are no different to drugs barons, the Mafia - they are profiting from people's misfortune / poverty / call it what you will - they are evil, criminal thugs.

The UK forces had no choice in leaving Afghanistan, the USA decided on the date.

oreo Fair play and fair comment.

I’ll take a deep breath next time you post something offensive and remember it’s not directed at me! grin

Yeah, you do that.
The only kind of posts I report are the personal attack ones.
What you find offensive in an opinion isn’t what everyone does.If posters can’t tell the difference between having varying viewpoints and outright rudeness they shouldn’t be commenting.I regularly take a deep breath when reading some posts, it’s the best way.

The US handled it badly and it was a panicked exit by all, and was no fault of the UK.
Many Afghans are now living here but there was no way we could get them all out in the circumstances.
