Farage has told Nick Robinson that the West "provoked" Russia's invasion of Ukraine with EU and NATO expansions

Much as you might expect from one of Putin's "useful idiot" who even had his own show on Russia TV.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 21-Jun-24 19:09:14

He is a fifth columnist. Working for a Putin with Trump’s support!

Wheniwasyourage Fri 21-Jun-24 20:06:57

Unfortunately I think you’re right, Whitewavemark2. How sad that we’ve come to this. sad

Vintagewhine Sat 22-Jun-24 07:38:02

He's not the only one though. Didn't Boris have close connections with Russians?

ronib Sat 22-Jun-24 07:48:43

In this instance, Farage is correct.

keepingquiet Sat 22-Jun-24 07:51:54

Brexit fed right into Putin's hands and brought about the Ukraine invasion.

Farage isn’t the only person blaming the eu and nato.
This article in the Guardian might explain to some who can’t get past their hatred of Farage to see that there is some truth in what he said.

I have voted for Farage as he knows exactly what he is talking about.

Calendargirl Sat 22-Jun-24 08:47:02

I watched the interview.

I found it interesting, as did Nigel in reply to many of Nick Robinson’s questions. “That’s interesting” was his starter for most of his answers. Gave him a breathing space to retaliate.

Say what you like, he made a more watchable interviewee than some of the others.

And he made some valid points.

I read that NF was at a venue the other night that held 850 and it was full and turning people away.

Chestnut Sat 22-Jun-24 09:32:28

Some people here see conspiracy theories everywhere! So you think anyone who isn't left or hard left is a traitor. 😂

Of course all the other leaders make perfect sense and have all the answers.

I don't quite know why, petra, but somehow I'm deeply suspicious of anything promulgated by the Cato Institute. aControlled by far right libertarian billionaires...

The Guardian doesn't necessarily endorse all the views it publishes. It leaves it to its readers to make their own judgements.

Citing a 40yr + old agreement with a Russian leader of a completely different calibre and geopolitical outlook from Putin doesn't convince me that Putin had any right to invade Ukraine or take control of any former Soviet Union countries.

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Jun-24 10:43:20

I agree, MaizieD. I read the article carefully and can see that Russia wouldn't want more nations to join NATO from their POV but that is not an excuse

- those nations have every right to self determination just as the Ukraine does.

The Telegraph this morning said

"Nigel Farage has just proven that he’s not a serious leader
The Reform head is naive at best. It was Western weakness, not Nato expansion, that encouraged Russia to invade Ukraine"

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Jun-24 10:50:44

What I cant find anywhere is what Farage is actually suggesting we do - pull out of support? Just like with his policy of "returning the small boats at sea" he gives POV

but doesn't actually say any "how" policy wise

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Jun-24 10:55:50

Meanwhile Farage's buddy Trump is making completely contradictory statements, one moment saying he'd stop aid to Ukraine, and other that Ukraine's survival is important to the US.

(If you google "Trump on Ukraine" you can find many of these contra dictionary statements.

I think Farage should actually say what he would do.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 22-Jun-24 11:11:38

Have any of you watched the interview?

What he said was President Putin has used the excuse of NATO & EU expansion to tell the Russian population, they are coming for us

He also said that he warned the European Parliament 10 years ago that Putin wanted a war with Europe.

I will not be voting Reform or Greens, not sure who will get my X

Quokka Sat 22-Jun-24 11:21:27

Dangerous man. Able to sway folk with dubious rhetoric.

Quokka Sat 22-Jun-24 11:22:12

Able to sway gullible folk by his rhetoric.

Wyllow3 Sat 22-Jun-24 11:42:37

Many Western leaders and think tanks predicted further Russian action after Georgia, Chechnya, and the 2014 invasion of Crimea in Ukraine.

Farage is claiming that he only he saw what was coming through his "special knowledge". All self serving rhetoric.

Casdon Sat 22-Jun-24 13:41:36

I’m surprised at his naivety in actually saying his thoughts out loud. It’s headline news, he’s been widely condemned including by the right wing press, and it won’t do him any favours in the election at all.

karmalady Sat 22-Jun-24 13:46:26

poke a bear with a stick and he will turn on you. Farage is right

Whitewavemark2 Sat 22-Jun-24 13:55:26

Cut Farage in half and he will have Trump written right through him.

He is dangerous and extremely unpleasant.

HousePlantQueen Sat 22-Jun-24 13:56:57

PoorJenny

I have voted for Farage as he knows exactly what he is talking about.

well unless you have a postal vote in Clacton, this is untrue

Chestnut Sat 22-Jun-24 14:26:31

The conspiracy theorists are out in full swing. Anyone who is not a leftie must be a dangerous traitor.

It's clear that people are scared of Farage but you need to be much more fearful of Galloway and his cronies. They are gathering momentum and forming a party. The local election gave us a possible glimpse of where that is heading.

So maybe we should have another thread about Galloway and see if there is as much hatred shown towards him.

Casdon Sat 22-Jun-24 14:34:56

If Galloway were to make such a dangerous statement in a TV interview he would also rightly be castigated by the media Chestnut. As far as I’m aware Galloway has no supporters on Gransnet, so I doubt anybody would be defending what he said. As it is, Galloway has a minimal public profile, I haven’t heard anything he’s said about this election so far?
