I find it astonishing that immigrants from the UK (*I refuse to refer to them as ex-pats*) who haven’t lived here for many years can still affect the outcome of our election, and therefore who governs the Uk.

Talk about leaving your country and then shafting it!

Given the general demographic of these immigrants, I’m not surprised the 15 year rule was abolished by the Tories!

Got you talking. Actually I am still thinking about it . People in the UK want me to vote to ‘assist’ with getting the Tories out and I am registered but haven’t yet voted. I don’t actually like any of them so in the end may not bother. We’ll see. One vote won’t make any diff anyway.

I'm not sure what LizzieDrip means because we've lost so many doctors, nurses skilled people to Australia and New Zealand, some might return if they found working conditions here had become better.

Yes it's too late to register but if you are already registered as an overseas voter, the registration lasts for three years before it has to be renewed.

Callistemon213 I’m not only thinking about Australia & New Zealand, although I think many of the emigrants 😉 there may be ‘typical, older’ right wing voters. I’m also thinking about the thousands (possibility hundreds of thousands) of UK emigrants who have lived in Spain for many years.

The betting stuff has been going on for years, One of my DC works in political circles and has to follow betting odds to write up some of his reports. He says bets are going on all the time - next pm, next cabinet minster to resign, next Home secretary etc etc. Many of the bets are by insider knowledge - one example - in the time of Johnson, the husband of a cabinet minister bet on next cabinet minster to resign the day before his wife resigned! The company accepted the bet, the story was never leaked as it would look bad for the company and the ministers husband. But it wasn’t illegal and he made a few ££s. So this latest story is nothing new. It’s sleazy and not a good look in an election campaign.

That doesn't make them more honest and trustworthy. It would appear it gives them over inflated egos and a massive sense of entitlement.

Does it mean they are exceptionally intelligent? Probably not.

You are also getting confused between career civil servants and SPADS, political party officials and MPs/candidates.

Nanna8. Some time back, I had a discussion with someone who still holds a British passport, but took their family to Australia over 30 years ago. I can't see them living in the UK again as there are now a total of 4 generations living in there. They thought Brexit was a good idea. But it didn't affect them and look how that turned out!

While people are entitled to their opinion, acting on them to vote in a place where it will not impact them personally, is a totally selfish and vexatious idea.

Farage is a case in point. He needs to feel relevant and will say whatever it takes to keep himself in the spotlight. It boosts his ego as he is a grifter like Trump. If you and others think he and his Reform company will be good for the country, you are sadly mistaken.

The Bill was presented to Parliament and the House of Lords and was passed, becoming the Elections Act 2022.

Whatever the result of the voting in the GE it's those of us who live in this country who must abide by that result.
Those who live abroad should not be voting as they don't have to live with the consequences. Totally wrong.

I agree that the MPs and their staff, who used their insider information to scam the Bookies are immoral. But I also think they are thick as 3 short planks in being unable to think up a way of doing this without being found out. I am sure that if they set their mind to it the average Gransnetter could, within 5 minutes, come up with a cunning plan, (probably involving a friend, neighbour or relative placing the bets and sharing the ill-gotten gains).

I expect thats been happening too.....

The UK allowed overseas citizens to vote in elections, but only if they had left the UK 15 years or fewer before. After 15 years, no vote.

I bet that the Elections Act 2022 has the voter ID requirement in it, too. Tories trying to fiddle the vote in their favour. Which Rees Mogg actually admitted later 😁

It’s not just immoral but illegal to use insider knowledge to place bets, including in the way you suggest.
