Is this country morally bankrupt?

James Cleverley was asked last night if he would say that orphaned children in Gaza with relatives in the UK would be permitted to come here. He couldn't say "Yes". He ranted on about International agreements and our allies. What sort of a country have we become that we can't even offer a home to orphans and unite families?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 27-Jun-24 12:55:50

I hope some posters can understand your very clear explanation GG. Frankly it should be obvious why we can’t act, but evidently not to everyone.

Wyllow3 Thu 27-Jun-24 12:53:07

Currently there is no clarity about who will maintain control of Gaza until we hear what plans Israel have for the "End Game" as Hamas no longer control most of Palestine.
People are fed by international organisations and much of the infrastructure is in ruins including water and waste management.
Its all up to decisions yet to be made as to "who is in charge".

Callistemon213 Thu 27-Jun-24 12:47:15

I do understand what you meant, GrannyGravy and it's too easy for some to start accusing others without due consideration.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Jun-24 12:43:55

For LizzieDrip , Nandalot and any others who do not understand my apples and pears comment.

The U.K. is on speaking terms with the Ukrainian government and its President, they are a friendly European Country being attacked by an enemy of the West.

The U.K. is not on speaking terms with the government of Gaza, namely Hamas. Hamas is a terrorist organisation which hides amongst the innocent civilians of Palestine. We do not have a dialogue with them.

It is for those who are desperately trying to negotiate with the heinous terrorist organisation to try and get the children out of Gaza, it will be down to them to decide where these innocents can be relocated.

Whatever James Cleverly said or not said would be held against him, and Conan it be acted on seven days before a GE.

Are you a new poster, Feverjo?

Hello 👋

Callistemon213 Thu 27-Jun-24 12:33:02

How can he state anything when Parliament is dissolved at the moment and he will, in all probability, be in Opposition very shortly?

Had he said yes, of course, it would have been a meaningless statement and morally wrong.

LizzieDrip Thu 27-Jun-24 12:18:56

Crossed posts!

Grantanow Thu 27-Jun-24 12:18:48

No, the UK isn't but the Tories are.

LizzieDrip Thu 27-Jun-24 12:18:19

I don’t understand the ‘apples and pears’ comment either.

GrannyGravy perhaps you could explain your comment in more detail, for those of us struggling with it?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Jun-24 12:15:13

Nandalot

I don’t understand the apples and pears comment in relation to these children. Surely chilldren orphaned by conflicts of whatever nature deserve our compassion, it doesn’t alter whether that happened in Ukraine or Gaza.

The apples and pears comment was regarding the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, not the children 🤦‍♀️

Oh I’m sorry didn’t realize I needed a defender or mouthpiece. I’m sure there are much more welcoming recipients than myself, thanks.

Don’t be too hard on Feverjo.

The blanket some posters accusation is unacceptable, but at least when she says

We find all kinds of excuses to view some children as less worthy of our love and compassion
she includes herself.

Feverjo Thu 27-Jun-24 11:54:29

If you don’t feel accused I see no point in the exchange. I can make a statement and choose not to engage you on it. Free speech and all.

maddyone Thu 27-Jun-24 11:48:53

I have never found GrannyGravy to be racist and I don’t believe that her comment on this thread was racist.
Glorianny you should withdraw that disgraceful accusation.

Do you feel accused? If it’s not true of you then move along. And don’t assume it’s someone on gransnet specifically Im posting about. I made a statement relevant to the topic at hand.

I do not feel accused.

I asked you a question relevant to your post.

Please do not tell me to move along

Let’s face it, some people’s compassion dims dramatically for non-white, non-Christians. We find all kinds of excuses to view some children as less worthy of our love and compassion.

Who are the some people you are accusing on GN

Mollygo Thu 27-Jun-24 11:42:41

It’s too complex to do off the cuff, no matter how much we care.

Define children.
Where would the age cut off point be for acceptance as a “child”?
The age at which they can vote?
The age at which they have the right to take drugs?

Define ‘join with their families’.
Which families?
Would these families have to agree to take responsibility for the children until they’re old enough to leave home?

What about those children who do not have families over here, or do not have families willing to take them in, or whose families over here are already suffering from child poverty and would find it difficult to add to their already stretched circumstances.

What would you do with them?

How does shouting that these are children, or implying that only you care doesn’t help.
Maybe you are genuinely volunteering to take in these orphans yourself.

Glorianny please an you explain your comment

I’m afraid all I can see is probably one of the most racist comments I have ever seen on GN

Please explain why pointing out that Gaza and Ukraine are as different as apples and pears is racist?

If you do not I am reporting you for calling my post racist and therefore calling me a racist which I am definitely not.

You post comes after a comment about the differences between the attitude taken to Ukranian children (who had no family here) and that taken to Gazan children who have family here.
You said it was
"comparing apples with pears"
Which means you see Ukranian children as apples and Gaza's children as pears. In what way isn't that racist?

Ukraine and Gaza are not comparable

Saying that is not racist.

Cossy

These are CHILDREN! Where has your compassion gone?

It shouldn’t matter about the politics or nationality, if they have family legally settled here, of course they should be allowed to come.

How would you feel if these children were your grandchildren or nieces/nephews?

Cossy, you are giving an emotional response to a very complex situation. It cannot be compared with, for instance, Ukraine. The children are citizens of another nation in whose affairs we interfere at our peril.

Thank goodness for emotional responses. Another view of that is a humanitarian response. or A caring response.or even A moral response.

The families of these children are in the UK. They may well be UK citizens of Palestinian origin.
How far would you take this? What other countries do you consider are too dangerous for British families to claim children from?

I have compassion for all mankind.

I do not want our MP’s to make off the cuff remarks which can be misinterpreted and held against the Government of the day.
