I didn’t see it - but just heard a bit on the car radio. An American onlooker said ‘it’s a choice between an old man or a mad man’. Just about sums it up.

Trump and Biden head to head
(201 Posts)A well conducted interview with these two candidates for President. Much, much better than any interviews our mob put on here. The future of America is in one of their hands. God help them. Both slagging each other off on a personal level, one of them lost the plot half way in and both lying through their teeth. Starmer and Sunak are a couple of pleasant, courteous gentlemen compared with them.

I only saw the highlights but Biden seemed to be confused and drifted off at one point. It was said he had a cold as he was croaky but really is he fit to be POTUS for another four years? Worryingly the felon Trump is still very much on the ball .
Apparently the Democrats made a quick exit afterwards.
Trump’s answers were full of lies and misleading comments . He rarely answered the questions asked. Trump was not on the ball at all . He just repeated nonsense. NYT has fact checked this debate and Trumps comments were for the most part falsehoods. Biden, for the most part, stayed on topic and answered the questions asked of him. I watched the whole debate.
Yes I quite see what you are saying, but the tiny bit I saw (and perhaps I should watch it all, but it was too excruciating ) seemed to show a man who has aged tremendously and really for the sake of the USA and the world perhaps the democrats should seriously consider fielding another candidate.

I wish you would rather comment on how Trump was a dithering liar who thought golf was an important topic in a presidential debate . Biden did a good job of sticking to the topic questioned . I find he was harshly critiqued compared to Trump . Biden is experienced and has been doing a great job . I have more confidence in him and none for a convicted felon .

What Whitewavemark2 says is actually the sensible option if the Democrats want to win the election. We all know what Trump is, a narcissistic liar but a visibly aged and frail man who forgets what he’s saying mid sentence isn’t going to win another term, and tbh shouldn’t.If they don’t think it’s too late then he should be replaced.
In USA the mics are cut so no chance of shouting over each other .
The worst part was seeing Biden's wife congratulating him about how well he'd managed to answer every question. She sounded as if she was talking to a 5 year old.
It's possible to not support Trump and also not support what is happening with Biden, which in my view is abusive.

Did you even watch the debate ?
Yes.
There are already potential replacements being mentioned, all of whom are vowing their support for Biden. If Biden is determined to carry on it’s very difficult to remove him apparently, if he chooses to resign it will be a free for all and an abbreviated nomination campaign.
I would back the latter, soon

Yes absolutely, but as things stand the lying rapist may get the presidency.
I would if I was an American citizen support Biden but I would wish that another candidate was possible

Don’t be fooled by the loud obnoxious Trump supporters. Biden supporters are quiet in their support but determined.Biden is doing a good job as President and that is what counts. He is not dangerous and has a good reliable cabinet. The USA does not need a malevolent liar that would be dangerous to the USA and the world.
I thought GN's might like to glance over this Guardian Article which lists 6 possible Biden replacements and background. a couple there look good - sadly I really do think Biden should step down now - but I don't know the system.
someone above said Kamala Harris isnt popular as candidate, wondered why.

I don’t listen to the Trump supporting media but I do look at the polls, I have no doubt that Biden’s record is good - especially his economics which I’m hoping a new government in the U.K. will echo - although we don’t have access to the funds that Biden has -
But the polls I’m finding so very worrying.
What would happen if Biden were to step down and another candidate were nominated. Syracute?.
I understand that there is no official nomination confirmed until the Democratic Convention in August.
I mean, what would happen in terms of voter support?
A country with a population of 300 million plus and the contest is between two elderly men: one feeble and exhibiting mental confusion and the other a dangerously delusional madman.
Beggars belief.
SyracuteI would vote for Biden too but he does seem to be getting more frail. I wouldn't want the obnoxious Trump back as president either.
Trump does seem to appeal to far too many people. Why would anyone vote for such a reprehensible man?
The same sort of people that are willing to vote for Farage.

That depends who is nominated but would likely benefit the Democrat vote.
The continual attack by Trumps seemed to disorientate Biden which then made him hesitant, it was embarrassing. Attacking in that way may prove to be a mistake by Trump if a nominee with wide appeal replaces Biden.

Agree [Georgesgran]... my American family members have stated that they wouldn't vote for either...and I only caught a clip of some of the debate and Oh Dear, you want to give them both a sleeping pill IMO ....but here in UK, am still uncertain who to vote for😈
Having only seen a brief snippet ( edited highlights?!) of the debate, Biden is worse than I thought.
There has been talk for a year or two about his declining cognitive ability, but he looked and sounded like a man with fairly advanced dementia.
There must have been a massive cover up of just how bad things are.
Who is running America, because it certainly isn’t Sleepy Joe.
Biden has been a better Potus than Trump was. The radio 4 analysis of the debate concluded Biden’s responses were more focussed on the issue than Trump, who as always rambled on full of his own importance.
But - Biden looked and sounded exhausted, frail and unfit for the job. Trump has huge support despite being a lying narcissist who poses a threat to world stability.
Surely the Democrats have to field an alternative candidate
Why can’t somebody like Anthony Blinken be the Democrat candidate? Biden makes great speeches, I’m sure he doesn’t use autocue, either. Far more eloquent than Trump has ever been capable of. He also used to suffer from a stammer, something that perhaps is still a problem. They did say that his sons trial broke him. There should have been a fact check during that debate. Trump was lying throughout. Eg he lied about offering Nancy Pelosi protection.

Even Trump had the sense to not want Farage working with him. Farage is only in this country because America didn’t want him. His tour was, I believe, cancelled because no one wanted to hear him.
