Newsnight last night a focus group bod “more in common” said that the word most used when asked to describe the U.K. it was

BROKEN

What is yours?

Mine would be broken.

The UK may still be a good place to live, grandMattie.. but it's not the happiest!
Not according to the 2024 William Russell happiness report. This considers lots of evidence such as perceptions of the environment, friendliness, safety, and inclusion.

Here's the list of the top 20 in order:

Finland
Denmark
Iceland
Sweden
Israel
Netherlands
Norway
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Australia
New Zealand
Costa Rica
Kuwait
Austria
Canada
Belgium
Ireland
Czechia
Lithuania
United Kingdom

I believe this load of twaddle report is produced by
"a partnership of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the WHR’s Editorial Board. The report is produced under the editorial control of the WHR Editorial Board"

William Russell (an insurance company) purely quoted it.

I’ll second that one GG!

I’m on my way home to lovely 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 from a week in Morocco and as much as I love visiting other countries and experiencing different cultures and climates, trust me that we have so much to be thankful for in Britain.

I would say, whilst most people I know are cheerful, they are also very

Annoyed by our politicians

I understood that lots of people who voted to stay part of the union (in the referendum) did so because of the promise that this was the way to stay in Europe. I did think that was a betrayal Grandmabatty.

I second that. Living in the Netherlands was wonderful. The Dutch seem to have got their work/life balance much better than over here and they are intensely patriotic - they never run their country down as we do. I often wish I had been born Dutch.

I never run it down, nor do I have any desire to wave a flag and big it up.

Its slightly embarassing the way we've ended up.

Certainly divided would be my choice. It will take many more years to undo the damage of the decisions made by the Tory party in the effort to ward off the competition from UKIP/Reform. Fruitless efforts at that.
Like Grandmabatty I have not felt that I am part of the UK since the last referendum.

Wonderful!

Never forget that for all its faults, the UK is so much better than most other countries despite all its problems and difficulties.

👏👏👏👏👏 Absolutely.

TerriBull Wed 03-Jul-24 08:31:24

Teetering! That's how I perceive much of the democratic world, I reserve judgement as to how the country will fare under a new government, I'm not overly optimistic as I was when Labour swept to power in 1997, this feels more of a change by default.
