Starmer's No 10 speech in full

I was moved by Starmer's speech this morning. Like many, I thought he maybe didn't have much depth, but have completely changed my mind. He is a principled man, started his speech with acknowledging, kindly, his predecessor. Compare and contrast to that lying buffoon Johnson. I feel cheered, and hopeful.

HPQ, that really really hurt my feelings:

I'm a lifelong Labour Party member and was active through the tough times until we've managed to turn things round. I was active in the discussion in GN and really supportive of Keir taking time with his family when missiles were lobbed against that.

So my comment on a man I respect deeply was a wry recognition that he might not manage family time just today - no more, no less.

On a more positive note I was very impressed with the hand over of power today- Sunak was gracious and decent in defeat and the way he spoke about Starmer revealed a very different side I hadn't seen before.

Decency is not a word we have been associating with politics for some time, and I for one welcome its return, as well as this idea of service instead of gain.

Let's hope it can be sustained.

I was very moved by Starmer's speech today.. He was respectful and compassionate towards Sunak and it seems towards our country.. I have high hopes that this integrity and care will continue and that all the pledges will indeed be achievable.

I'm also impressed at the number of women he has appointed to his cabinet

I thought both Starmer and Sunak behaved with utter respect and dignity and I liked both their speeches.

Now, let’s give Starmer a chance and see what happens. We’ve given lots of Tory PM’s lots of chances across the last 14 years!

I was particularly pleased Sunak didn’t lose his seat and even more pleased that Rees-Mogg did!

Listening to Sky News tonight I realised that many in the cabinet ( I keep going to describe them as shadow cabinet; can’t get used to it) had been in that position in the shadow cabinet. So, unlike the last few years of Conservative government during which cabinet posts became like a form of musical chairs, the new cabinet is actually staring it’s work up and running and full formed. There has been an organised, dare I say almost clinical approach to this transition which I’m very impressed with. I think the country could do with a few years of organised and clinical especially as it’s going to be combined with compassion.

I also noticed that heading through the crowd to the stage, people not only shook his hand and patted his back,they actually pulled him to them and kissed him.
The men as well as the women.

They said some of them were friends going back many years including ( I think) one of the people he was in a band with. There was a genuine two way warmth and affection amongst everyone. He is held in high esteem by so many people.

I agree that both the outgoing Prime Minister and the incoming Prime Minister made excellent respectful speeches.
I was impressed by Jacob Rees Mogg ( who brings me out in a rash every time he speaks, normally) being gracious in defeat.

He was at the time. But I believe that later on he started saying the defeat was caused because they threw out Johnson. Our outgoing Conservative MP sarcastically said to her constituents ‘good luck: you’re going to need it’. How rude of her.
