A number of hospitals have set up a successful model to begin to clear the backlog, and Streeting has been involved with them for months.

The NHS have been working to clear the backlog for the last couple of years. This is nothing new.

I have had appointments with consultants on Saturdays, and 2 friends have had major surgery on Sundays. I had a booked scan at 7.30pm one evening.

I would now like a commitment to scrap the use of secondary legislation - except in some limited and circumscribed situations - to avoid proper parliamentary scrutiny.

The use of secondary legislation - statutory instruments - is necessary. There are huge numbers of them, a great many dealing with trivia, but necessary trivia. It would be completely impossible for the vast majority of them to be considered by parliament. Their use is authorised by primary legislation, which is scrutinised.

Yes, this is nothing new and Labour can’t claim credit for it. Much more progress would have been made had it not been for the numerous strikes.

Wes Streeting is going to be meeting with Junior doctors next week. I really hope he can sort this one out and then people can stop blaming the strikes.

I found it refreshing that he said he wasn't going to play the blame game but just get on with what needs to be done.

Prisons

Starmer was asked about the existential crises in our prison system and how he was going to deal with a system that is completely broken.

First he has appointed a man John Timpson that many in the legal world are describing as ground breaking.

Apparently the previous government failed to spend half the budget set aside for new prisons, and this will be dealt with immediately, but meanwhile our prisons cannot hold a single other prisoner. The last government tried to deal with the issue early by release and asking policemen to stop arresting people. At the moment early release will continue because there is no other choice, but there will be a profound sea-change on how we deal with crime and offenders.

This is an immediate issue and being dealt with accordingly.

A number of prisons are in the process of being built but have been delayed by planning issues. Starmer should be well aware of that and I’m sure he is, but would prefer people to think that nothing has been done.

Having worked in benefits advice and still engaged in voluntary work with disability benefit claimants, I’m a little concerned about the lack of information around how Labour plan to reform benefits like PIP and ESA. So far they’ve been tight lipped except to say that all disability support will ensure that those disabled people who can work will be supported to do so.

Benefits like PIP are not dependent on claimants being in work and the only information available is that Labour will be looking at the consultation launched by the Tories on its’ reform, and taking things from there. The Tories plans for PIP claimants were complicated and unworkable in my view and didn’t address the real problem, which was the assessment system itself. One can only hope that Labour will apply the common sense and compassion so lacking in the Tories approach to disability benefits.

I fear that, for the next 5 years, whatever the Labour government does to improve this country (which I believe will be considerable) all we’ll hear is a stream of negativity, from some quarters. The country might become a shining Utopia but, for some, even that won’t be good enough🤷‍♀️

A pity you didn’t listen to the speech. Starmer in fact did recognise this and said that indeed half the money had been spent.

He is all about transparency.

You must remember that there has been a complete re-set in the way government behaves. I know it must be difficult to understand after what we have witnessed over the past years, but this government is about truthfulness and standards.

They have been tight lipped about everything Pammiel. We are in for some unpleasant surprises.

Yes family members have had scans and appointments at the weekend.

I had a cataract done in a private clinic. It was on the NHS and done four weeks after referral.

But don’t you understand that the willingness to tackle was not in existence.

Yes indeed two hospitals in particular had developed this model, independently with NO input from the previous government, and indeed the ONLY member of parliament who worked with them, encouraged by the results were Streeting. The previous government had every opportunity to develop this model and could have done so over 2 YEARS ago. But chose not to do so.

The government gives untold millions each year to the NHS and I don’t understand why they need to be told how to manage their finances or clinical operations. A lot of hospitals have been seeing patients and carrying out surgery in the evenings and at weekends for a long time. What are the highly paid managers there for if not to manage?

I’ve just seen that one of the plans is to bring back Alan Milburn in a non- political role to support driving down the waiting lists. I was in the NHS when he was health secretary before, and he was very effective, so I’d support that move - having somebody who understands how things work is a big advantage.

How is that staffed? Are staff being paid overtime or being taken off weekday shifts or are agency staff being brought in?
