It would appear from the video that this officer lost control.
It would be interesting to see what led up to this as we've only seen the part which some want us to see and that includes the media.

I'm presuming this officer let his anger at what had happened to his colleagues over-ride his professional training.

GMP has only just come out of special measures. They had been failing at almost every level.

This will be a set back.

My daughter walks the streets in anger because young men from particular communities treat women like scum. The police are attempting to address this but will no doubt be accused of racism.

Whilst the officer concerned clearly did lose control in a moment of madness and has been suspended, I don’t think the men have been charged with anything. This seems strange when 3 officers were badly assaulted.

We cannot allow a situation to develop where certain communities cannot be subject to the same treatment and laws as the rest the population.

They are trained in the way you describe Callistemon. It’s possible these armed officers feared losing their weapons, also possible they get less experience at calming potentially violent incidents. My experience over many years was that police officers were highly skilled at calming difficult situations.

The female officers in particular are better at calming but all she got was a broken nose, I’m not condoning the officer but understanding why he lost control.

In a situation where a suspect has to be wrestled to the ground, others in the group may well try to take a gun from him, very dangerous.

Where is the evidence that this particular young man had treated any woman like scum? If there isn't any, the police officer was taking out his feelings towards other young Pakistani men - that is racism.

As others have written, I would rather wait to find out what really happened. On the face of it, there was no need to kick and stamp on a man who was already on the ground and had been tasered.

How do you know these three aren't being treated the same as anybody else would have been? Maybe they didn't do anything to be charged.

Now there’s mobs congregating outside a police station issuing demands. I dare say if it wasn’t for such intimidation they would have been charged.

Supposition again. Four have been arrested and evidence against each one has to be assessed.
At the same time there is great pressure to get the overall story of the sequence of events clear.

There have been a few comments on the fear by the police of their ams taken by those perpetrators and presumably using them, causing the police to react more violently.

I think that this a good argument for unarmed police where there are no arms being used.

There are always armed police on duty in airports. The threat of terror attacks remains high and airports are possible targets in that regard. I prefer to be safe when I go to an airport.
In other situations , where terrorism is not considered so much a threat, police are not armed.
I think the overall rating for a terror attack in this country officially remains at high.

We don’t know who the 4 men arrested are. There seems to have been an altercation after the mother of the 2 brothers complained to them about the behaviour of some on the plane. No doubt GMP will be piecing together info from cctv cameras that show the build up to police involvement.

My point was that in any situation there is less tension and violence when there are no arms, which as far as I am concerned vindicates a non-armed police force.

Police are armed at airports for counter terrorism purposes. In a terrorism incident they need to be armed for the safety of others.

I think that the wishes of the family involved to keep politics out of it and due process take place should be respected by some of those demonstrating, certainly until we have the relevant reports.
However kicking in the head wasn't acceptable. Neither were the actions of those arrested if charged.

I'm not being silly. I've watched various videos of the incident and know just as much as you do, which is not the whole story.

If it was obvious that there were reasons for charging, I have no doubt that it would have been done. I really don't think that the police are so wimpish that mobs would deter them from doing their duty.

Now maybe you'd care to stop gaslighting me because if I were a wimp, I'd find it intimidating.

I think thats inevitable sadly in a major airport.

What I would like to know is how did the men contact their lawyer so quickly? Was he on speed dial? And now the lawyer is saying that it was an "attempted assassination". If that's not inflammatory talk, I don't know what is !

tickingbird generally in GN there has been an increase of words/phrases like "you're silly/pathetic" - personally demeaning terms/labels

that just aren't necessary.

There are other ways of strongly disagreeing with a poster, as in "personally I found it obvious that" and giving reasons why.
