Wes Streeting Declares CQC "Not Fit For Purpose"

So, the watchdog meant to oversee health services, hospitals and care homes (and guard the users against poor quality treatment and deliberate abuses) is rated as useless by the Health Secretary.

No surprises there then.

In particular, the care home sector is now notorious for slipshod practices. And the CQC?

You may as well complain to a brick wall.......I know from frustrating experience.

I have read the manifesto ronib, but if you have, you’ve read something into it that isn’t there. Nowhere does it say that there will be no building programme to upgrade and replace general hospitals.

CasdonWell Labour wouldn’t say that would it? This hospital rebuilding program has been kicking around for years and years. How can Labour pause it ? It’s so badly needed. Hospital rebuilding should take priority over net zero imo.

I’m glad I don’t live on the same planet as you ronib.

Casdon likewise. But can’t you answer the question of why net zero is taking all the budget?

For pausing read kicked down the road.

I'm not sure how you can pause something which isn't happening.

Yes, I could immediately dispute that incorrect statement too. However, I’ve recognised that I’m wasting my breath. I don’t speak Zog.

Growstuff oh for pity’s sake- the land has been cleared and foundations going down at my local hospital rebuild - set in place 20 years ago. The rebuild was happening only to be paused again. Who put these clowns in charge?

ronib Wed 31-Jul-24 10:17:31

Casdon I am the one not speaking Zog.

Casdon Wed 31-Jul-24 10:23:46

Okay I’ll take that at face value ronib. You produce conclusive evidence that ‘net zero is taking all the budget’ and I’ll concede. I’m out now for the day, so by the time I get back about 5 would be good. Look forward to seeing it, from a trusted source of course.

I was very annoyed with the CQC’s staff at my mother’s care home. She had advanced dementia (all the residents had dementia). My DM was well past being able to participate in, let alone enjoy, any activities - she could not longer even make any sort of conversation or understand/reply to questions.

Yet the CH staff told me apologetically that they’d taken her to some activity she couldn’t possibly benefit from, since the CQC lot were there, and ‘anyone ‘just sitting’ means a black mark.’

This, in a care home specifically for dementia! - and incidentally very good.
I told them that if it ever happened again, they should leave her in peace and refer the CQC staff to me.

It was all too apparent that they were clueless about advanced dementia. And very likely about dementia, full stop.

I should add that the CH did always have plenty of activities for those residents who were still able to enjoy them.

Don't "for pity's sake" me! I've known land to be cleared and foundations to be built and then have projects stalled for years as a result of funding problems.

Are you claiming that funding was in place for all of the promised 40 hospitals? The projects have been "paused" - maybe to give the accountants a chance to look at the books and see what really is possible and not a figment of Johnson's imagination.

ronib Wed 31-Jul-24 10:52:54

growstuff yes funding had been secured for my local hospital. Why on earth does this hospital not get rebuilt after such an incredibly long wait? I don’t understand why the other 39 hospitals need to be considered when this hospital is fully funded. Since you are so knowledgeable please explain.

I’m getting fed up of saying this. The 40 hospitals schemes have been postponed, not shelved. There is concern about whether funding had in fact been allocated by the Tory government.

Johnson claimed to be building 40 new hospitals. In fact many were renovations of wings of existing hospitals. There were very few new ones.
