I was very annoyed with the CQC’s staff at my mother’s care home. She had advanced dementia (all the residents had dementia). My DM was well past being able to participate in, let alone enjoy, any activities - she could not longer even make any sort of conversation or understand/reply to questions.
Yet the CH staff told me apologetically that they’d taken her to some activity she couldn’t possibly benefit from, since the CQC lot were there, and ‘anyone ‘just sitting’ means a black mark.’
This, in a care home specifically for dementia! - and incidentally very good.
I told them that if it ever happened again, they should leave her in peace and refer the CQC staff to me.
It was all too apparent that they were clueless about advanced dementia. And very likely about dementia, full stop.
I should add that the CH did always have plenty of activities for those residents who were still able to enjoy them.
