We will lose the benefit and that is fine by us. I think older people, especially those like us who are comfortably off, should be expected to make a contribution to sorting out the country's economic situation.

So what should they do - where should they get the money from to fill the black holes?

Where's MaizieD?

In a hospital bed, having had a hip replacement op this morning 😆

But you know very well what I'd say about that 'black hole', don't you...

Hope you're soon mobile again, MaizieD.

I can sympathise (mine's a new knee!).

Rachel Reeves may have shot herself in the foot when all those pensioners who can but don't claim pension credit start to claim. There was a slight upsurge of claims when the free TV licence was scrapped.
If all those who are entitled now claim then get the WFA the expected income from taking WFA from those not on pension credit will be reduced.

Hope to see MaisieD back soon with her sensible and informative posts.

I have just read that Unite the Union is meeting with the government over the loss of the WFS and are strongly against this exploitation of pensioners . They are starting a campaign to have this decision repealed. Watch this space!

Doodledog Fri 02-Aug-24 16:54:37

I agree that it was a bad move, but I don’t see how pensioners are being exploited by it.

Rachel Reeves has been waiting for years to be "tougher than the Tories on benefits". She likes to look tough, although I don't think looking tough on pensioners and small children in large families is admirable.

No but they’re an easy target.

Labour challenged the Tories not to cut the WFA many times. They are hypocrites and liars.

I just find it incredible.

Does she think she's targeting wealthy pensioners, those Baby Boomers that younger generations like her supposedly dislike and resent?
Does she think this will make her popular with younger generations?

I think she's missed the mark with this.

As for refusing to lift the two child benefit cap for families with small children!
She told the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg: “It costs more than £3bn a year.

This well-heeled couple have no idea how many people live in this country. That sounds like the kind of remark one might make about a Tory.
I expected better of her.

ronib Sat 03-Aug-24 09:09:32

Is Rachael Reeves trying to stamp her authority over us in some bizarre way? What is planned for her October statement?
I imagine that WFA savings will be swallowed up by increased riot policing costs. Politics is after all the art of the unexpected.

MaizieD Sat 03-Aug-24 09:14:51

I expected better of her.

I'm sad to have to say that I hoped for better from her, Callistemon, but my expectations were not high.

This is just the moment at which Labour could have been economically bolder...

Wait until the budget and spending review.

Then opinions will carry more weight.

The statement by Reeeves was addressing the current year

Best wishes to Maisie and Callistemon for speedy healing .

Esmay Sat 03-Aug-24 10:02:43

There are people who don't need the supplement and many who do .
I hope that we aren't going to get leaflets or TV slots on how to keep warm without adequate heating-wearing hats and scarves and drinking lots of tea and soup .
Perhaps , Rachel Reeves would like to spend a winter of having no heat

Esmay Sat 03-Aug-24 10:07:50

Grrr sent without finishing .

no heating .
I have for about a decade .
Your entire body seizes up and it's hard to sleep .

Ilovecheese Sat 03-Aug-24 10:20:21

I expected her to do exactly as she has done. It has been obvious for years.
