Starmer’s Speech 01/08/24

For reference, and to avoid misinformation being given out.

“This week – we are a nation in shock.

A country coming to terms with an attack so inexplicably vile…

That fear is an understandable reaction.

Our first thoughts of course are with the families at the heart of this…

Their pain is unimaginable.

And so I call on everyone to give them and indeed the wider community at Southport…

The space to grieve.

And time for the authorities in Merseyside…

To do their job.

There will be a time for questions.

And we will make sure that the victims and families in Southport…

Are at the heart of that process…

That’s the very least that we owe these families.

But we also owe them justice.

So while there’s a prosecution that must not be prejudiced…

For them to receive the justice that they deserve…

The time for answering those questions is not now.

And I remind everyone that the price for a trial that is prejudiced…

Is ultimately paid by the victims and their families.

Who are deprived of the justice that they deserve.

Let me turn now to the actions of a tiny, mindless minority in our society.

Because in the aftermath of this attack

The community of Southport had to suffer twice.

A gang of thugs, got on trains and busses…

Went to a community that is not their own…

A community grieving the most horrific tragedy…

And then proceeded to throw bricks at police officers.

Police officers who just 24 hours earlier…

Had been having to deal with an attack on children in their community.

Their community.

And make no mistake…

Whether it’s in Southport, London – or Hartlepool…

These people are showing our country exactly who they are.

Mosques targeted because they are Mosques.

Flares thrown at the statue of Winston Churchill.

A Nazi salute at the Cenotaph.

And so I’ve just held a meeting with senior police and law enforcement leaders…

Where we’ve resolved to show who we are.

A country – that will not allow understandable fear…

To curdle into division and hate in our communities.

And that will not permit, under any circumstances…

A breakdown in law and order on our streets.

Because let’s be very clear about this.

It’s not protest.

It’s not legitimate.

It’s crime…

Violent disorder.

An assault on the rule of law and the execution of justice.

And so on behalf of the British people…

Who expect their values and their security to be upheld…

We will put a stop to it.

I want to thank all of the police officers, across the country…

Who have already, as they so often do…

Stood up to intimidation and violence in the past few days…

And indeed, throughout the summer.

And let me be clear – the meeting this afternoon was not about pointing the finger of blame…

That is not how this Government of Service conducts its business…

Because it doesn’t work.

Rather – this was a meeting to pull together our response…

A response both to the immediate challenge…

Which is clearly driven by far-right hatred.

But also - all violent disorder that flares up.

Whatever the apparent cause or motivation – we make no distinction…

Crime is crime.

And so - to that end…

I can announce today, that following this meeting…

we will establish a national capability, across police forces…

To tackle violent disorder.

These thugs are mobile…

They move from community to community…

And we must have a policing response that can do the same.

Shared intelligence…

Wider deployment of facial recognition technology…

And preventive action – criminal behaviour orders…

To restrict their movements…

Before they can even board a train…

In just the same way we do with football hooligans.

And let me also say to large social media companies and those who run them…

Violent disorder clearly whipped up online…

That is also a crime.

It’s happening on your premises.

And the law must be upheld everywhere.

That is the single most important duty of Government…

Service rests on security.

And we will take all necessary action…

To keep our streets safe”

And many more decent ordinary people recognise the vast contribution that immigration gives to our economy.

HousePlantQueen Mon 05-Aug-24 19:29:22

While we are in the mood of applauding the decent and forthright speech made by Starmer, irrespective of our political allegiaance, it is worth being reminded of the decent, fairminded Tories who were the victim of Johnson's time in office. I always admired Dominic Grieve for one, and this post on Twitter confirmed it for me:

^It's impossible to view the postings of Farage, without utter revulsion&.
He masquerades as a " reasoned commentator" on what he claims to be a national crisis linked to immigrants while claiming he deplores any lawlessness. Then he hints at more lawlessness if his warnings are not heeded.
The reality is that his entire political future is dependent on fomenting confrontation and division. It is by creating a climate of crisis that he has got where he has.
And some of my former Conservative colleagues have argued the Conservatives should be linking up with Reform! Perhaps this shameful episode will open their eyes to his malevolence.

Jcar Mon 05-Aug-24 19:17:21

Of course there is two tier policing. Whilst the actions of rent a mob cannot be condoned many ordinary decent people have had enough of the detrimental effect mass immigration has had on the fabric of this country. Something has to give.

Grantanow Mon 05-Aug-24 18:21:51

I agree that better education and more, accurate information would reduce the tendency to street violence of the kind we are seeing but I also think there is a low lying stratum of society that will never be sufficiently educated to resist being manipulated by the worst type of politician or influencer.

All leave will be cancelled and forces combine in troubled areas.

I wish more people would understand the sacrifices the police make to keep us safe.
My DH has been involved in policing riots over the years. I remember his exhaustion as no rest days at those times. Also the children hardly saw him. I did feel like a single parent sometimes.

My ex DH was in the Met for years so I know all about cancelled leave. Including high days and holidays as you know.
CID isn’t for the faint hearted, including the wives.

Doodledog Mon 05-Aug-24 17:15:56

He is your PM, Nannashirlz, like it or not.

Some of us have had fourteen long years of not having our views represented, and yes, we've criticised policies and personalities at times, but we recognised that the Tories were the government, and didn't tell lies about what they were and weren't doing.

We've seen, and are still seeing where disinformation leads. I wish GN would delete it from on here.

I thought Keir Starmer gave a good, sincere and forthright speech. I judge him to be a credible and honest politician, an intelligent man. A sincere family man.
If this next five years pans out the way he clearly hopes then he may get my vote.
His cabinet though have to prove themselves before I switch allegiance for the first time in my life.
The hatred leading to this thuggery can only be stamped out with education, education, education. The media, politicians and public have a huge role to play in using appropriate language, only giving proven facts and showing, what I hope still exists, our traditional tolerance and compassion to others.

Absolute agreement from me

Wyllow3 Mon 05-Aug-24 15:13:56

Allsorts

I don't think much of his speach. He is papering over cracks. He is not listening. There are thugs and yes they need dealing with, they are at the front throwing bricks and setting fires scaring everyone and hurting the peacemakers. Look beyond those people to the masses who feel threatened and ignored, and voices not listened too, the peaceful ones, he doesn't address them or care.

That speech was specifically to address the riot at Southport and further riots in terms of policing and containment.
I'm sure Starmer does listen, only too well aware in fact, and would want to do more, but his ability to immediately address the problems of those who feel disenfranchised or worried limited.

And - gosh, the strangest of days - I'm agreeing with Pritti Patel...

I was astounded to find that I did, too. She was so unpleasant as Home Secretary.

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 05-Aug-24 15:08:00

Allsorts, I repeat what I have said on other threads. We have had an election, at which every adult citizen had the right to vote.
The majority did not vote for the rhetoric of Reform.
Those who disagree with the outcome of the election declare themselves " threatened and ignored ".
Shall we ignore the will of the people and hand over all decisions to those who complain that they are " not listened to"?

I have much more confidence in Starmer after his speech. I hope he will be good for this country. We are desperate for a someone who will actually lead. We've been missing an effective leader for too long.

I agree

Well done Priti! Never thought I’d say that … but credit where it’s due.

^Of course it will, and the police will accept their cancelled family plans and wasted expenses as they always do. Let's hope their efforts get some wider appreciation rather than the blanket condemnation some are quick to give^

Rosie51 well said.

And hopefully no more of the ridiculous ‘two tier policing’ trope!

Even Priti Patel has said that the 'two tier placing' thing is not correct.

I do wish people would stop to think before trotting out cliches. It's so harmful.

What a good and welcome post.

I also think it is beholden on every citizen to watch every word we say in this febrile atmosphere.

I hope (believe) the Labour cabinet will prove themselves enough to win your vote next time roundsmile

I particularly agree with your final paragraph. Thank you.

Starmer's speech was excellent. Measured but forceful, I hope he can get a grip on this situation. I also hope the judges will give out more than slapped wrists when offenders are brought to court.
