Don’t mess with the tolerant people in Brighton.

So, the fascists turned up outside of the targeted building, and as far as I can see the road is full of the tolerant folk who are as someone said are really tolerant of tolerance, and very intolerant of intolerance.

I've no idea if it's true, but the word here in Brighton is that the fascists were met off the trains by drag queens and a samba band.

You don't have to be an idiot to bring white supremacy to the most welcoming and inclusive city in the country, but it sure helps

What kind of bikes are asylum seekers given?

Same as the various other groups of people who have come to the UK, settled and assimilated over time - cycles of prejudice and discrimination.

For goodness sake, wake up! Look at the rise of rape and knife crime - bit of a non sequitur I feel.

Kudos to the GNs brave enough to go onto the streets.

Quokka Sat 10-Aug-24 22:55:17

Another one here who stood with anti-racists today. All ages, all creeds. The far right were scheduled to appear; half a dozen turned up then scuttled off to cries of derision from us Grans in the crowd.

Callistemon213 Sat 10-Aug-24 21:51:59

Farzanah sorry!

Callistemon213 Sat 10-Aug-24 21:46:04

You're very brave Farzansh, well done.

Well said Farzanah- and so good to hear news of the event that you joined today.
Let's infuriate Elon Musk !

I went with trepidation to a Stand up against racism, today in my county town. It was so encouraging to see a huge turnout of peaceful supporters in the town square. This demonstration was approved by the police who were there in numbers, but thankfully there were just a small group opposing the demonstration and there was no trouble.

I found it uplifting to see so many in my fairly rural and conservative county coming out to show that they do not agree with the racist narrative pushed by the violent demonstrators last week.

I understand that many feel left behind economically, but it is easy to scapegoat refugees and asylum seekers for all the country’s ills. I think that the blame lies solely with the government of the last 14 years who have practised cruel austerity, with those who are poorest faring the worst.
I believe the media, press and some MPs have also been complicit in demonising refugees, and setting the scene for some of the hate demonstrated recently.

Yes, it was such a relief, WWM2, to see on the news, that response to the hate marchers in Brighton. Astonishing also, the speed at which the criminals are being identified, rounded up, charged and kept on remand. Yes, GNs, that Labour Councillor was also arrested and charged. Interesting that online offenders are being included in the round up. I wonder how far up the food chain the prosecutors will get with this?
Thanks WWM2, a great thread.

That is an interesting point about how far up the food chain.

I understand that the legal ability to go after on-line influencers is to be amended to include words that say something like.

“Legal but dangerous” or something along those lines. How on earth that will work remains to be seen.

Musk is trolling the U.K. government - I suppose the way to stop him is to - cut iff his income, which seems to be happening as I wouldn’t want my firm associated with Musk.

Others will be more easy to identify and brought to justice.

I think that Starmer has shown true and strong leadership

No wonder top-tier Kier has been trending since yesterday.

Do these legitimate concerns, echoed I know by many others make me ‘intolerant’ and ‘far right’?

I'm afraid they do when the problems you list are blamed on asylum seekers and refugees instead of incompetent and corrupt governments over the past 14 years.

Amalegra Sat 10-Aug-24 17:56:27

I am extremely glad that the rioters disturbing the peace of this country are facing their just punishment. True British values do of course include tolerance for one’s fellow citizens whatever their ethnicity etc etc. Unfortunately many of our fellow citizens are not so tolerant considering that huge anti semitic sentiment has reared its ugly head among many groups and has not been dealt with as severely as it should. The BLM riots of 2011 in which 27 police officers were injured also illustrates some parts of society that are far less tolerant. And Ricky Jones’ rant calling for members of that mysterious ‘far right’ to have their throats cut, accompanied by clapping and cheering is also evidence of different factions clashing in this country today. I would add that concerns about the continuing huge rise in immigration does not make someone racist or fascist. This name calling is just the knee jerk reaction of those who refuse to engage in reasoned debate which is the hallmark of a civilised democracy. They are legitimate concerns considering the appalling state of our public services, especially housing and the faltering economy. Where on earth can these ‘refugees’ go (many of whom are economic migrants) and who is going to pay for it all? Do these legitimate concerns, echoed I know by many others make me ‘intolerant’ and ‘far right’?

The racists are so thick, they think the Brighton Pavilion is a mosque!
Walthamstow did a great turn-out too. Fabulous.

🤣🤣🤣

I remember it from when I was a child.
It has got Islamic elements, it's a very beautiful building and always fascinated me

Perhaps she is on holiday? It does happen.😃

As far as I remember there was only one attack on that thread (by an occasional, not regular, poster and the post could have been deleted.

Even posters who disagreed with GSM politically were saying it was unfair.

Oreo Sat 10-Aug-24 16:26:41

It couldn’t be said any plainer.

Oreo Sat 10-Aug-24 16:25:36

I’m not getting at anything or anyone, I was explaining what I was told by GN to pascal30 on the rules discussing missing posters. That they can be talked of as long as it’s in the spirit of Gransnet and aren’t personally attacked.

After reading all the comments here about missing posters I contacted GN to ask about rules as members are unsure about if they can say anything. The message back is that yes you can talk about them as long as all in the spirit of GN and there are no personal attacks on them.
So there you have it.😃

I don't recall GSM making personal attacks.. ever

It isn’t about what the missing poster did or didn’t do, it’s about present members not making personal attacks about the missing poster.

What are you getting at (or, should it be 'who' are you getting at?)

The system seems very unfair to me Oreo...
