Don’t mess with the tolerant people in Brighton.

So, the fascists turned up outside of the targeted building, and as far as I can see the road is full of the tolerant folk who are as someone said are really tolerant of tolerance, and very intolerant of intolerance.

I've no idea if it's true, but the word here in Brighton is that the fascists were met off the trains by drag queens and a samba band.

You don't have to be an idiot to bring white supremacy to the most welcoming and inclusive city in the country, but it sure helps

Kandinsky

I didn’t think much would happen last night. They’ve had almost a week of rioting so they’re done.
Unfortunately though, I don’t think a few drag queens sprinkling glitter is enough to save this severely divided, utterly f**ked up country.

😘😘😘😘

Never mind kandinsky

Peace and harmony to you

Come on in the water is lovely!

She is being a realist, sorry but she is.

I think they’re done too now.
I hope that both sides are done tbh and the streets go back to normal.
I further hope that Keir Starmer will make immigration the top of his agenda, assessing numbers that we need, via legal migration to fill jobs and getting a handle on the illegal migration.

Absolutely a realist, a few marches with rainbows and glitter doesn’t put this country back together again when there are so many things to put right.

Last night we saw the true face of the U.K.

Thousands upon thousands of peaceful individuals standing against hate and division.

We now know that they far, far outnumber the people of violence and division trying to destroy our way of life.

Well it will never happen because slowly and quietly the people are winning the argument not by hate but by love for their fellow man and woman.

That was what was in show yesterday.

👏👏👏

Heartening to read and watch the turnaround of the hatred and violence that has stained our values and communities over the last fews days. People power at its best.

“The poor fighting the poor only the rich win”was a poster that shone out for me.

Galaxy Thu 08-Aug-24 08:38:23

If it makes you feel better crack on.
However 'you' (not you personally) were amazed at Brexit, horrified that Trump won, didnt foresee the issues floating about in Europe with right wing parties so I probably will view predictions such as this with a bit of caution.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 08-Aug-24 08:38:56

“Have a little chuckle snd move right along”

Good advise from another GN poster about the posters who give out vibes of misery and division.

Galaxy Thu 08-Aug-24 08:43:20

Disagreeing with you is not misery.

But you see sowing seeds of community, togetherness and shared values has to start sometime.

Yes we’ve seen dreadful division and hate, but we have to start somewhere, somehow to climb out the morass we have found ourselves in.

No one is saying that there isn’t a mind blowing amount of work to achieve this, but standing by on the sidelines shouting boohoo is definitely not going to achieve anything is it?

Galaxy Thu 08-Aug-24 08:45:36

We disagree with you how to achieve it that's all.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 08-Aug-24 08:48:21

Well I suppose there is a choice.

Optimism, joy and hope, patience, hard work and understanding

Or the alternative

Which is what?

MaizieD Thu 08-Aug-24 08:50:32

I hope that Starmer will not make immigration the top of his agenda. It was the tory/right wing negative focus on it that has caused the situation we found ourselves in last week and this.

I hope that Labour continues to competently sort out the immigration mess that the tories have left, while not turning it into a culture war issue, and turns its focus to measures to improve the lives of those whose disaffection stems from poverty and feelings of helplessness. Which would cover so many more areas than immigration.

Gandhi managed it.. and Mandela.. we need to stand firm

Many of us have been waving red flags for years, those of us who talked about middle class beliefs, left behind towns, (23% of the working population of hartlepool are on out of work benefits) a complete divide between politics/media and many ordinary people, I dont know what else to do to be honest, it will all carry on, and then in a couple of years time, possibly via the ballot box will explode again. I can confidently predict that drag queens will have no influence on this.

My heart swells to see all the peaceful, pro immigrant counter protestors all around the country. We can be an inclusive, caring society and not allow this social breakdown..

Me too! It’s these people who make proud to be a Brit!

Oreo Thu 08-Aug-24 08:59:01

What do you mean exactly Whitewavemark2?
Euphoria in Brighton doesn’t fix anything. There really is a mountain to climb and tho I hope Labour will make a start on it, beginning with cutting the fuel allowance to pensioners wasn’t a good sign.I want Starmer to realise that immigration needs addressing pdq and not falling into the trap of thinking it’s only the far right who are worried about it.

Casdon Thu 08-Aug-24 09:07:17

I don’t think Starmer thinks that for a minute Oreo, or indeed that anybody else does. Knowing the reality shouldn’t detract from people’s pleasure at the response from communities where people care though.

ronib Thu 08-Aug-24 09:12:52

Oreo well pensioners are not going to take to the streets to demonstrate or bend their knees in true left wing solidarity are they? I just wonder what the government will do when thousands start to die from hypothermia? Brush it under the carpet in its pursuit of net zero?

Oreo Thu 08-Aug-24 09:17:53

We don’t know what he thinks Casdon so he needs to come out and say it and more importantly do it.

JaneJudge Thu 08-Aug-24 09:27:57

We were asked to stay home, I thought it was the most sensible thing to do - mainly because we have seen what violence had occurred the previous week. The community where our March was to take place peacefully sat around chatting until the sun went down. If the edl did show up they didn’t make themselves known. I would rather see the scenes of yesterday than the scenes of the previous week. I feel less worried

Casdon Thu 08-Aug-24 09:28:10

We know what he has said though Oreo. He will be given the chance to elaborate on what he’s said so far, and to deliver, which is all we can expect five weeks in. Personally I’d prefer less words and some proof of action - evaluation after the first 100 days plan will be fair way to assess performance.

Kandinsky Thu 08-Aug-24 09:29:42

It’s interesting, because Muslims, on the whole, are extremely conservative, some may even call them right wing.

Was the Muslim community actively involved &’supporting Brighton Pride? Or any other gay pride event?

Oh well. In 50 years we’ll have the country we deserve.

LizzieDrip Thu 08-Aug-24 09:37:12

Good morning everyone🥰

Lovely night last night😘

Have a happy, peaceful day all of you😍
