The tide has turned

According to Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, one of the UK’s most senior police officers.

But he stressed there was no room for complacency, with the police now “very focused on the weekend" with “many potential events still being advertised and circulated online”.

He then goes on to talk about the 6000 standing army of police, intelligence, Swift justice and the fact that the level of involved citizens who turned out in such force of numbers that it was impossible for the thugs to get to their targets.

People power!

I’m sure many of us felt something had happened on Wednesday evening when the country made it clear that they will not stand for such thuggery directed towards innocent people and so it has proved.

Of course it is early days and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper asked if she believed Wednesday night marked an end to the violence she told said that the government was “not going to take its foot off the pedal on this”.

“The police and the criminal justice system all have our strong support to keep going and keep making sure criminals pay the price for the kind of violent disorder, the thuggery, the extremism and the intimidation we have seen in communities. We will not stand for this violence,” she said.

I think we can begin to breath

Allegations of assault against women, he resigned from Save the Children I think it was and the foundation, 'he was sorry for any mistakes'. They didnt proceed with the charges
Or do you mean why am I wary of the 'good guys' because I dont know if I have the energy for that! My house looks like tip, how do people get anything done when they are sucked into GN shock

Hasn’t he recently remarried a woman who is involved with violence against women?

If he was guilty of being a sex pest - that was 7 years ago - he has served his “sentence”I would have thought. Although I would like to have seen the evidence as “stitch up” comes to mind.

Never the less there is such a thing as redemption and forgiveness.

Galaxy Fri 09-Aug-24 13:01:46

Actually after all this I am pretty sure he didnt set it up, I think hope not hate benefitted from Jo Cox foundation money, but I dont think Brendan Cox set it up. So they will be relieved to hear I dont have to boycott them. I can imagine their relief.

Galaxy Fri 09-Aug-24 13:05:38

His sentence from me is that I laugh every time he moralises. And no I dont think when women make allegations against nice men that it's a stitch up. I honestly dont know what to say to that.

Babs03 Fri 09-Aug-24 13:08:02

May be a bit late to the party with this remark. I think someone has said or alluded to the assertion that nobody calls the opposite side ‘the far left.’
Well, they actually do, and not infrequently. During Corbyn’s stint especially, ‘the far left or hard left’ were bandied around. And many in the Tory party refer regularly to ‘the far left’. Also the term ‘loony lefties’ or ‘WOKE lefties’ etc., are derogatory terms used fairly frequently.

JaneJudge Fri 09-Aug-24 13:10:25

far left and far right meet in the middle of the threshold of hell

Two Asian men just been sentenced for aggravated after they attacked a group of white men who were in an anti immigrant demo in Leeds. Hopefully demonstrating violent behaviour from whoever is not tolerated.

welbeck Fri 09-Aug-24 13:10:58

you are right Galaxy, on both points, re BC, and that he did not set up Hope Not Hate.
it is much older.
i remember reporting something to them in the early noughties.

Hope not Hate
Hope not Hate is an advocacy group based in the United Kingdom which campaigns against racism and fascism. It has also mounted campaigns against Islamic extremism and antisemitism. It is self-described as a "non-partisan, non-sectarian organisation." Wikipedia
Founded: 2004

from mr google:

Hope not Hate was founded in 2004 by Nick Lowles, former editor of the anti-fascist Searchlight magazine. Having experienced street racism as a child, Lowles got involved with the anti-fascist movement as a student volunteer at Sheffield University.

There was talk of a 'riot' happening in Glasgow. Glasgow is multi cultural with many different nationalities and races coexisting fairly happily. Last year there was a stand off between locals and immigration officers who tried to take folk away. They didn't succeed. I don't think the so called rioters thought that one through! I really hope the message has got through that if you break the law, you will be dealt with.

I would think stopping immigration officers from carrying out their lawfully duties was breaking the law. There is a reason people are to be deported, so your Glaswegians took the law into their own hands. Any punishmwnts, no guess not. How many lawbreakers did they allow to remain in the UK.

Grandmabatty Fri 09-Aug-24 15:40:47

Don't know Freya, don't care. The point I was attempting to make, was that the EDL seriously misjudged the racism of Glaswegians. Our marches tend to focus on religious bigotry which is a whole different story. Id like the tide to turn on that too

Grandmabatty Fri 09-Aug-24 15:44:24

That should say, most Scots. Yes, there will be racism, but we don't have an appetite for mindless rioting over race

From Greater Manchester Police. Today they have released 5 photographs of people they wish to identify for an "outbreak of disorder" following the protest at Rochdale police station. Previously, it was stated that the protest had "finished safely and without incident". This, 15 days later. A cynic might wonder whether this is purely a response to the recent criticism of two tier policing.

Hardly, more that subsequent detailed analysis of CCTV at the time has turned up shots of individuals who are “of interest” or perhaps incidents which are significant in the wider scheme of things.
You say a cynic might wonder - you are presumably that cynic.

Thanks RosiesMaw and JaneJudge. These cynics look for any thing they can find with which to criticise the police/starmer/CJS - all too often the conspiracy/two tier policing etc they allege is shown to be nonsense.

I saw that. It’s a relief to know that racism is acknowledged as a two way thing now.

Back in Liverpool in the 70-80s it was seen as a one way thing. Complaining about abuse was only acknowledged one way.

Yes. I saw that in the news. I think it puts paid to the talk of there being a two tier system. Thankfully.

It doesn’t at all. That’s just the tip of a huge iceberg.

Are you Farage’s mouth piece?

This is just a conspiracy theory and needs knocking on the head.

It is wrong

Not true

A lie

Incites discontent

Thankfully we are not in the 1970's.

Ordinary people, the government, the police, mosques, churches and so on are tying themselves in knots trying to be fair minded and decent, but no. We now have talk of an iceberg.
More dissent and unpleasantness.

Doodledog Fri 09-Aug-24 19:39:53

The good news is that if the arrests are the tip of an iceberg, we have a new government in power, and its leader has promised to do something about the delays in the legal system, as well as so many other things that have been allowed to slide.

I'm inclined to believe that he will keep his promises much more than the string ofTory leaders he's replaced. I very much hope so.
