Appaling.
I sincerely hope they are getting the best care.
Nothing more to say 😔

these events are rarely random.
sometimes, of course, but mostly not.
i don't think London is anymore dangerous than any time i remember.

Well we never had security guards in tea rooms, even in London. Obviously they felt it was necessary and it seems it was.

We can speculate all we like in our heads, but not here. The truth will out quite soon. I'm just amazed they have plastered the guy and his comments all over the media. Even where he works. Aren't we told not to do that because it might compromise the Police investigation?

Yes Chestnut but SM (some platforms more than others) just ignores that. It’s not regulated … because of ‘free speech’ apparently🤷‍♀️

The BBC are reporting about the security guard, and what he said.

Babs03 Mon 12-Aug-24 17:34:54

Our mental health care system has to reviewed pronto, and those thought to be possibly dangerous should be sectioned until correct medication improves their mental health, then there need to be proactive follow up teams in the community monitoring their progress, whether or not they are taking their meds etc?
Not enough funding in mental health care has contributed to this imho.

It's very worrying that SM spreads information like wildfire. I posted on another thread about how dangerous TikTok is (programme on BBC iPlayer). It spreads things 1,000 times faster than the other SM platforms and has been responsible for people investigating crimes, scaring people, and accusing the innocent. Really dangerous. Once it's out there you can't take it back. The BBC and others cannot fight it I suppose.

I have just seen his in SKY News, apparently the injuries are not life threatening.

The little girl is 11 yrs old.

As a Gran who is taking two GC up to London next week, this has given me goosebumps. I am now reconsidering.

My DD is going up to London tomorrow with the GCs and it would not cross mine or her mind to cancel.

You should not let these awful people make you alter your plans. The chances of anything like this happening to you and the GCs is practically nil. Don't worry, just go and I hope you have a really great time

tickingbird Mon 12-Aug-24 18:23:51

Apparently the young girl is seriously injured and not minor as earlier reported.

Just horrific and regardless of physical injuries she (and her mother) will have such psychological trauma.

It’s difficult to comprehend the fear when some random person starts attacking your child.

I hope they get the help they will need going forward.

Babs it is so easy to say they shouldn’t be on the streets but do you realise there are very few beds now after the Tories wanted everyone in their own homes many hospitals or wards for mental health were closed down

A mental health worker can spend all day ringing around the country to find a bed for an acute case if they find one it can be at the opposite end of the country to where the patient lives Precious time that should be spent with the patient

Good points and there are some people who should be institutionalised as in the ‘bad’ old days as their mental health causes them to be so dangerous, that care in the community is of no use.

Fleurpepper Mon 12-Aug-24 19:27:56

What is the nationality and ethnic origin of this attacker?

We know that the guy who saved both of them by immobilising the attacker and kicking the knife away, don't we?

Farzanah Mon 12-Aug-24 19:42:17

Fleurpepper Why?
Is it important?
Well done to the man who intervened very bravely when the attacker was wielding a knife.

Fleurpepper Mon 12-Aug-24 19:44:09

It is - because of past history here on GN and in the popular Press.

Farzanah Mon 12-Aug-24 19:57:34

Ah do you mean false rumours Fleurpepper?

Fleurpepper Mon 12-Aug-24 20:00:26

False rumours, but also very different reactions depending on colour of skin and religion, assumed or not.

White, British = mental health issue.

Brown, black, arab looking = islamic jihader.

Farzanah Mon 12-Aug-24 20:12:23

Yes I agree. It’s started already! People like a familiar narrative - even if it’s wrong.

Wyllow3 Mon 12-Aug-24 20:18:35

I don't.

On the morning when this horrendous story broke I was working with the sister of the victim: the killer was the victims husband. He was a paranoid schizophrenic.
My next door neighbour was a psychiatric district nurse. The killer was a patient he visited to administer his medication.
A while before this tragedy happened that service was discontinued so lots of seriously mentally ill people were left to their own devices.

Report on the incident:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckg5xx0gly8o

Hats off to the rescuer who held down the attacker:

*Abdullah, 29, who works at TWG tea in Leicester Square, said he intervened to stop the attacker who had blood on his face and chest.
"I heard a scream and I just went outside and saw one guy had a knife," he explained.

"The moment I saw it I just jumped on that guy and grabbed his hand... and put him down on the floor and kicked the knife away from him."
He said a couple of other men also came over to help and held the man down for "four to five" minutes, adding he decided to take action because "I had no time, I just didn't think*

Yes, many people ran away so well done to Abdullah and others who did not run but held down the attacker with the help of others until the police arrived.

What a shocking thing to happen yet again.

maddyone Mon 12-Aug-24 23:56:28

Well done Abdullah. A fantastic achievement and now the person is in police custody.
I hope the little girl and the woman (her mother? grandmother?) make good recoveries.
I would worry for their mental health though.

hallgreenmiss Tue 13-Aug-24 00:12:01

Stabbed by a white man and an Asian intervened. Tommy Robinson and his mob have gone quiet.

grumppa Tue 13-Aug-24 00:25:02

hallgreenmiss, you took the words out of my mouth.

Allsorts Tue 13-Aug-24 07:03:35

Don't know how care in the community was ever considered a good idea, who in the community are caring? It would not surprise me if the person that carried out these awful stabbings have mental health issues not being treated. I have heard just on the radio, that people with the most serious issues are refusing the medication that controls their symptoms, so they are not safe in the community..

karmalady Tue 13-Aug-24 07:47:33

He has been officially named as Ioan Pintaru

I think it will be another mental health case

maddyone Tue 13-Aug-24 11:59:40

It’s just been announced a Romanian citizen has been detained in connection with a knife attack in Leicester Square yesterday.
