Perhaps you should consider this perspective biglouis and fancythat.

Also bear in mind this is not a big elephant in the room (135,000 since 2018), it’s a baby elephant compared with the million times larger elephant of controlled migration, if you are concerned about the population growth.

Wyllow3 Thu 05-Sept-24 14:39:43

I was interested Casdon in what was meant by this in the article (in practical terms)

"Darmanin called, as he has done many times, for a new migrant treaty between Britain and the European Union."

Casdon Thu 05-Sept-24 14:44:38

I think he’s saying that the UK should fully finance the fight in France to prevent migration to the UK Wyllow3, as it’s costing the French authorities so much.

Thank you, Casdon

And yes, Rory's hedgehog speech can be found on YouTube, Maybee70.
I'm a lover of hedgehogs we've had 3 living in our garden for a good few years now. Lovely little creatures.

Goodness, deleted posts always get me so curious!

Don't believe all at the BBC say. They have an agenda re immigration, it's all good.
At least with legal migration, too much of that also, you know who, where from, and why they are coming into the country, wouldn't you say. For how long they are legally able to stay.
We give enough money to France as it is.
The open borders across Europe are the problem
Perhaps they should employ fitter younger Gendarmes to patrol those beaches, the ones ambling after the migrants yesterday were pathetic, I could run faster, and that's saying a lot!!!!

Wyllow3 Thu 05-Sept-24 15:07:17

The BBC don't have an "its all good" brief on immigration at all. They report the numbers and facts. I'd like to see any BBC article that reports "its all good" if you can produce one?

Casdon Thu 05-Sept-24 15:11:34

Yes, that must be it Freya5, they are all lying. Not. Good grief.

rosie1959 Thu 05-Sept-24 15:45:15

Well who ever is elected hope this helps poor Keir Starmer he still refers to Rishi Sunak as PM. He did seem a little confused at yesterday PMQs

Wyllow3 Thu 05-Sept-24 15:55:39

I thought it was just amusing and he made a joke of it
www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/ckkgrw3lwp1o

but of course much is being made of it patronisingly.

Rekarie Thu 05-Sept-24 16:01:07

He did say it 5 times!

And he certainly didn't correct himself after each occasion

Wyllow3 Thu 05-Sept-24 16:12:40

Personally I think the topic under discussion - The damning Grenfell Towers report - much more newsworthy than this amusing blip.

Casdon Thu 05-Sept-24 16:12:44

It’s a temporary issue, does anybody know the last time the former PM became the leader of the opposition after an election? I do feel for Rishi Sunak, it must be very hard to be in that position.

Well maybe best not to comment on it!

Of course it matters not compared with the subject of this thread

It is not people that are needed for their skills, or if say people marry others from abroad that concern me.
Nor students if they are not abusing the system.

As I always say, immigration worked perfectly fine up until about 1994, when it was changed for some reason.

fancythat Thu 05-Sept-24 16:16:20

Where do you get the figure of 135,000 from Casdon?

I havent posted on this subject for a while. And dont go on N&P as often nowadays, but I dont feel able to totally ignore what is going on, and the impact it has in certain regions.

fancythat Thu 05-Sept-24 16:19:26

Or any bias, or skewed figures. or wool being pulled by people, or truths being hidden, or clever words or manipulation that seems to be going on by a surprising number of people

whether online or in real life, or by politicians or higher ups or whoever.

It seems to be being done by clever people to those who may struggle in society at the best of times.

fancythat Thu 05-Sept-24 16:20:59

Ooh, I have my first ever deletion.
No idea what I said that was wrong.

Yes what exactly is far right

It appears to be very popular and is being thrown about far too often.

Simple explanation from Huffington Post.

It’s easy to relate the guiding principles to the current parties.

That is certainly a good link.
I need to have a good read sometime, and think about it all.

Rory Stewart might have been a better option.
Too late.

I really liked Rory Stewart

I'm partly responsible, but I hope this isn't going to turn into yet another immigration thread.

Not that one isn't relevant if people want it, but that the O/P has opened a topic that matters a great deal in the long run. What kind of Conservative Party we get in parliament.

Oreo Thu 05-Sept-24 19:00:24

Wyllow3

We need a healthy opposition party in a democracy and predictions of "we're doomed" imo come from those not interested in the important discussion of how to get one, who is most likely to provide it, the alternative policies etc. Just turns off more and more voters as in "no point in being involved".

And I wish Keir Starmer would stop leading the doom and gloom brigade. What he needs to promote is an aura of confidence and hope in the same way Kamala Harris is doing in the US.We need to feel that things will get better not worse!

Oreo Thu 05-Sept-24 19:05:14

I don’t have any idea who the Conservatives will choose but think it will either be Jenrick or Tugandhat probably.

Yes, you did start it.

I may start a thread on the topic at some point.
But need to read up.
And read up other threads, if there are some, on the matter.

To my mind, assuming Farage stays the course, if the tories do nothing about Reform, they will be squeezed until they barely matter.
And yes, because of the immigration topic.
