The bravery of Gisele Pelicot.

I have struggled to read this dreadful story.
I really do not know how Gisele Pelicot has got through each day in court.

Her bravery and that of her children is quite incredible.
Her waiving her anonymity was her way of reversing the shame.

We have to come to terms with the fact that supposedly normal upstanding people can be such animals.

I recently went to the ladies loos in a big supermarket, there was a man in there urinating with the door half open.

I challenged him as did another lady, my husband said, I’m sure it was innocent, I was furious with him, you know when there are no urinals you have walked into the wrong one!

This man clearly got his kicks from invading a female space and to a degree exposing himself.
This may seem petty, but these men often do go on to commit further sexual crimes.

Gisele Pelicot thought for months her husbands only crime was “upskirting” in a supermarket.
Her shock at hearing the truth she said was like being hit by a tsunami.

I pray she recovers from her ordeal and has a happier life ahead of her.

Dominique Pelicot sentenced to 20 years in prison.

It's a niche kink - sleeping or unconscious people.

Galaxy Thu 19-Dec-24 09:30:34

Indeed niche porn. We should shame those who have those tendencies. Same with choking and all the other porn stuff that gets women assaulted and killed.

So far all but one have been found guilty of rape. and sentences being handed down. The French are getting on with it in one hearing by the look of it. Much fairer on Gisele Pelicot. If anyone has suffered enough, she has.

Only 20 years?

Only 20 years?

It is the maximum sentence that can be given for rape in France Aveline...

Aveline Thu 19-Dec-24 09:44:43

That says something about France...

I started this thread over a 100 days ago.
I cannot imagine the torment and anguish this family have been through in this time.
The thousands of people that have been there outside court each day to support the family must have been a terrific comfort.
I hope they can have some peace and happiness this Christmas.

I suspect that if he has to share a cell, he won't dare go to sleep.

WestEnd Girl, you are right to widen the discussion.

"And now the dreadful story of Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei , who has died from burns caused by her boyfriend, who poured fuel over her which he then lit.
Appalling cruelty again by a man ."

What is happening when one human being used as a mere object by another human being

The ex husband will now probs die in jail and all the others who raped Giselle have received sentences. But this won’t stop the pain this brave woman must feel every day after suffering such unspeakable crimes at the hands of a man whom she loved and trusted and whom she assumed loved her.
Now it emerges the daughter also suffered at the hands of her father.
My thoughts are with the family, let’s hope they are now left alone to try to recover and heal.

Pelicot has 10 days to appeal the length of his sentence and his lawyer says he's considering it.
It's been known from the start that he'd drugged/photographed his daughter, but he denies raping her though she thinks he did. He also secretly filmed his daughter in law naked in the bathroom. He's linked to at least one rape/murder though not proved.

It's suggested the other rapists got lower sentences than those asked for by the prosecution to dissuade them from possibly appealing. It isn't entirely over for Gisele.

I don't think it will ever be 'over' for her, life can never be the same again. The man she loved and trusted has betrayed her in the worst way imagineable.

But I hope she can find some peace, and perhaps some pride in knowing that her bravery brought these ugly men who used and abused her into the spotlight. Maybe there will be a movement to change the law on rape because of her, and she will realise that through her courage, men will think twice before casually using women as objects for their miserable gratification.

I’ve commented on the other thread that this case raises the eternal question. Why do so many men view women with disdain. As objects to be sexually assaulted.

I be have always said that in order to reduce sexual assault and rape cases, don’t look at extra more sensitive policing, longer sentences - though both are necessary , or encouraging women to be safe on our streets.
Go to the source. Let’s start looking at ‘men’, the actual perpetrators. And begin to dismantle a society that serves as apologists for men’s bad behaviour and build a new one that starts treating boys exactly the same as girls from day one. No ‘boys will be boys’. It can be done, many young men now no longer subscribe to the old tacit rules passed down by the old guard.

Its porn.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 20-Dec-24 15:00:31

I was a little surprised (!) to see a clip of one of the men being hugged by his wife/ partner as he entered court yesterday for sentencing. I would not want to hug any man who was happy to rape a drugged woman...how on earth can this woman live with this knowledge about her husband?
I do want to offer a cheer for an unsung hero in this case, namely the supermarket security guard who called the police on M. Pelicot when he caught him " upskirting".
This caused the phone footage to be reviewed, opening not merely a can of worms, but a canning factory load of worms.
A remarkably good days work for that man, I'd say.

I was surprised by that as well, but no doubt these men have given a different story to their wives and they probably haven't seen the videos..

I also think the security guard is an unsung hero.. a good man

Aveline Fri 20-Dec-24 15:55:47

Yes. Well done that security guard.

Galaxy Fri 20-Dec-24 16:48:48

Those 'lower level' offences are in my view always red flags for more serious offences.

Always Galaxy. Years ago indecent exposure was called flashing and I remember comments on gransnet suggesting ‘flashers’ were pathetic and harmless. It’s a gateway crime.

I worry that violent obscene porn is so readily available to fuel dangerous fantasies and escalate behaviour
