SKY and ITV are both reporting that Germany is looking into sending asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Apparently the facilities are ready and waiting 🤐

(sorry Jane I hadn't seen your post so duplicating information on German ideas)

Make no mistake, Johnson, Sunak and the Tories were useless. But compared to Starmer, they look like geniuses.

FriedGreenToms2 - I was thinking that maybe Sunak and Hunt could be special advisors to the new government. I have felt for a very long time that the current parliamentary system is not working. We need collaboration not hostility. This country faces particular problems and it’s not coming up with solutions. The political parties need to work together.

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 11:11:51

I'm all for working together when possible.

Westminster doesn't work well, for a number of reasons set out, for example, in recent books by Rory Stewart, Ian Dunt, SamFreedman and Chris Bryant, to name but a few. But I don't think it should be judged solely on the performative aspects of Parliament, such as PMQs.

It is worth looking at the work of the Select Committees, which have cross party membership and chairmanship. Their reports do present a consensus and show parliamentarians working together. Of course, their reports may well be ignored by government, but at least they demonstrate collaboration and objectivity rather than 'party lines'.

Contract for Bibby Stockholm runs out in Jan 2025 and will not be renewed.

Also:
see fullfact.org/online/asylum-seeker-free-iphone/

No free mobiles unless it provided by a charity:
If meals are provided then asylum seekers get £8.86 a week

Sky news provided details of what some in Germany are considering (this includes Parsley post from above)
news.sky.com/story/germany-considers-sending-migrants-to-rwanda-after-uk-ditches-same-idea-13210359

But its speculation based on an X post.

You are correct in saying contract for Bibby Stockholme ends beginning of next year so assume they will be going back into hotels up Country as they are not expected to stay in Dorset. They definitely get a free phone each whether it be provided by a Charity or Gov. When you have everything provided then £8 odd pocket money doesn't seem too bad. People on Portland have difficulty getting a decent bus service yet immigrants get an hourly free coach, can't be right surely!

Wyllow3 Fri 06-Sept-24 12:30:43

That must be very frustrating for locals, I agree. Bibby Stockholm has been controversial all the way through for many reasons (remember Legionella and fire risk assessments -fire assessments including it as as 'Grenfell waiting to happen'). At any rate, barges will not be used again, they were supposed to be cheaper but ended up far from.

In your opinion, I beg to differ!

Well we'll see won't we.
A done deal with duplicitous Macron and his new PM Barnier, neither of whom are friends to this country.
Yes we will see.

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 15:29:45

We will indeed see Freya5. It’s in the interests of the French to reduce migration to there, and across the channel, don’t forget. Politically the French are much more aligned to UK Labour, and there’s a lot more chance of co-operation to the benefit of both than there was before the election.

So far, the much anticipated boom in boat migrants since the election hasn’t materialised, much to Nicenanny3’s disappointment I’m sure (where is she these days, another mystery disappearance?).

Do you mean having comprehensively ballsed it up while the Tories were in power, they should advise Labour on how to do the same thing? Not one of your better ideas ronib. I suspect the intelligence about what needs to be done to mitigate lies within the civil service and with European nations, that’s where the government are rightly focussing their efforts.

MayBee70 Fri 06-Sept-24 15:56:13

Rwanda is going to become mythologicised ( is that a proper word) politically in that people are now going to be saying forever what a great idea it was and how, given time, it would have worked. It might even create a new term, being Rwanda’d.

Oreo Fri 06-Sept-24 18:14:17

Unless Maybee70 the Germans make the Rwanda experiment work!

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 18:28:59

It’s not at all the same thing as the UK system was proposed to be though, see the post from Parsley3 above.

ronib Fri 06-Sept-24 18:32:43

Casdon your post 15:43 did you mean

mitigate lies as in untruths? Or did you mean lies eg rests within the civil service ?

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 18:37:25

No ronib, Parsley3’s post, which explains what Germany are suggesting they might use Rwanda to achieve.

Parsley3 Fri 06-Sept-24 19:06:52

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. I believe the German Ambassador.

petra Fri 06-Sept-24 19:09:49

Why did the International Organisation for Migration help to sent 40 Afghan schoolgirls to Rwanda in 2023 if it’s so awful.
Taking into account these are vulnerable young girls.
And, they are doing very well.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 06-Sept-24 19:12:41

Miguel Berger
@GermanAmbUK

Let’s be clear, there is no plan of the German Government to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. The discussion is about processing asylum applications in third countries under international humanitarian law and with support of the United Nations.

Oreo Fri 06-Sept-24 19:14:59

The asylum seekers will have to actually be in Rwanda for their claims to be processed so that’s disingenuous of Miguel Berger.

Oreo Fri 06-Sept-24 19:15:56

If anyone can make the Rwanda experiment work it’s Germany.

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 19:45:46

I think you misunderstand Oreo, he is meaning that asylum seekers will go to Rwanda from their home countries for the applications to be processed, it will be a receiving centre rather than a place they are sent from Germany.

ronib Fri 06-Sept-24 20:09:02

Casdon really stupid question but how are asylum seekers meant to find their own way to Rwanda if they’re nowhere near it? And when they do eventually find their way there, do asylum seekers claim asylum from a selection of countries? Or just Germany? But why not Rwanda? Bit confused about this approach.

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 20:18:30

Rwanda is in central Africa isn’t it? I’d guess for most asylum seekers it will be no harder than getting to Europe. I think processing asylum applications in Africa is a sensible plan.

ronib Fri 06-Sept-24 20:30:32

Best avoid Burundi Rwanda border then? Still not sure this is a workable solution Casdon

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 20:39:44

I’m not proposing it though ronib, it’s the brainchild of Germany and we have no detail at all on how it might work. Can you not see the merit of asylum claims being processed in Africa, or in or near to peoples home countries?

eggplant Fri 06-Sept-24 20:40:01

Oreo

If anyone can make the Rwanda experiment work it’s Germany.

How so?
