So where will they go?

We already have a housing shortage, people sleeping on the streets, people living in substandard accommodation and the eternal issue of housing asylum seekers.
Now they are going to release large numbers of prisoners early to ease the shortage of prison spaces.
On the news just now, prisoners were saying that sometimes, the only option to living on the street is to get back inside and probation officers were expressing the same concern, in addition to the fact that some landlords won’t let to ex prisoners.
It looks like an insurmountable problem.
What do GNs suggest.

I think there’s a strong chance that released prisoners will go back into prison if their release has not been carefully arranged.

ronib Mon 09-Sept-24 14:24:49

Ps of all people Sir Keir Starmer with his legal background will know this.

MissAdventure Mon 09-Sept-24 14:27:26

Hopefully support services will be put into place, and existing ones altered so that they prevent reoffending.

That was one of the concerns raised by a probation officer on the item.

Mollygo so what is Keir going to do about it?

ronib Mon 09-Sept-24 14:55:53

Ps given that the Uk has run out of prison spaces … I meant to add.

Usually there are three months to prepare for a prisoners release, not a few weeks. One mum in despair as her 14 year old sons, Gordon Gault, murderer is being let out early. How is what Starmer is doing is right, just because a few hurty words were said, a murderer is being let loose. Bloody disgusting.
More crimes I'm sure will be committed, as if no one has a roof over their head, no money, no food. Perhaps they should say a few stupid words or wave a Union flag, they'll be back in prison before you know it.
Silly, maybe in a Labour fans eyes, but that is the way many are seeing it.

ronib Mon 09-Sept-24 14:57:22

Is anyone else getting the impression of a leader who can’t think through on consequences?

MissAdventure Mon 09-Sept-24 15:05:42

I've just been reading about Gordon's attackers, and I totally agree that it's an insult to his memory.

biglouis Mon 09-Sept-24 15:16:31

I dont think Two Tier Kier has thought of that one yet!

AGAA4 Mon 09-Sept-24 15:36:19

It's stepping over a line letting murderers out early. Those who are non-violent maybe.

Babs03 Mon 09-Sept-24 15:45:55

Tbh if we don’t want overcrowded prisons we need to do something about mental health care in thus country. A large percentage of men and women in our prisons have mental health problems/addictions which lead to them committing crimes. Is a direct correlation imho between swingeing cuts in funding for mental health care/care in the community/adult social care and overcrowded prisons.
And if prisoners with mental health probs are being released due to overcrowding they will just end up on our streets sleeping rough or overcrowding our hospitals.
Time for someone to join the dots here.

eggplant Mon 09-Sept-24 15:47:42

Can you put in prison for waving a flag? That seems a waste of rescources.

Ilovecheese Mon 09-Sept-24 15:51:27

Compulsory purchase of unoccupied blocks of flats bought as investment and never let out. Several major city centres.

ferry23 Mon 09-Sept-24 15:55:10

Well if this new government's current trend is to continue, they'll probably house released offenders in the spare room of a pensioner.

🤣🤣🤣

No! Not all pensioners will be reduced to that according to GN.

Perhaps someone on here has a sensible suggestion.

I believe the murderer of Gordon Gault only got a couple of years, for his sentence, how can that be, the assailant may well have been charged with manslaughter, but he went out with a friggin' great knife, so there was clearly a murderous intention there. I understand that Keir Starmer thought it necessary to make an example of the rioters, but at the expense of violent criminals being released shock I've read that there are women living in fear of violent partners being released. I just hope more lives aren't lost as a result.

I accept that prisons are over crowded with people who shouldn't be there, mental health problems being one factor. Thieving could be dealt with in other ways, community service. Violent criminals who are a danger to society, such as Gordon Gault's murderer. Remember this from a couple of years ago. Joseph McCann, serial rapist who carried out 11 attacks after major failings by an unstable probation team with failures to recall him to prison despite him being a major risk. Yes he's got a life sentence now but not before he went on to abduct, rape and assault 11 women and children between the ages of 11 and 71 in a 15 day rampage. Why was that even allowed to happen shock

J52 Mon 09-Sept-24 16:10:25

As I understand it they will be those serving the larger length shorter sentences for low level crimes.
Perhaps they have families to return to.

ronib Mon 09-Sept-24 16:14:31

Maybe King Charles will convert some of his spare properties into rehabilitation centres?

BlueBelle Mon 09-Sept-24 16:31:28

NO I think Starmer is a very clear thinker Most of these prisoners will be short term offences or time nearly spent
Many will have families and homes waiting for them it’s very
‘hands up in the air’ to imagine thousands will be on the streets
Why shouldn’t they have their own homes to go back to

Mollygo Mon 09-Sept-24 16:46:33

Mollygo so what is Keir going to do about it?

No idea. We’ll have to wait and see.
It would be good if that sort of thing was announced at the same time as the decision to release prisoners.

To be fair, I don’t know what to do about it either, but I’m not being paid two salaries to solve the problem.

ronib Mon 09-Sept-24 16:49:02

I think some newspapers are suggesting that 50 per cent of all early releases will be bounced back into prison. That’s sad.

MissAdventure Mon 09-Sept-24 17:59:43

For some people,it's the nearest semblance of an orderly, structured life that they've ever had.

It's a huge problem that we have so many people like that in our society.
