Drownings in Channel this year

8 people drowned last night making 45 people now drowned this year.

No signs of the boats stopping and no people smuggling gangs smashed as promised.

Not going well for Keir is it? He still hasn’t appointed a Border Security Chief either.

Mollygo Sun 15-Sept-24 09:19:32

I’m using the current mantra
Give him a chance. He’s only been in charge for __ weeks. The previous government was in for 14 years.

As the weather gets colder, the wind gets stronger and the sea gets rougher, the problem might solve itself.

He might have a plan in place by next spring.

Mollygo Sun 15-Sept-24 09:20:43

That’s still too many drownings. They may be doing something wrong, but they don’t deserve to die.

Casdon Sun 15-Sept-24 09:21:41

A truth piece is required.

Is it reasonable to expect Labour to have solved this issue in just two months do you think Lisaangel10?

Fartooold Sun 15-Sept-24 09:29:58

Totally agree with Mollygo. Surely it will take new government a while to sort this out after 14 years! Just hope he sorts it out humanely, no one should be allowed to die trying to find peace.

If your post wasn’t so unbelievably naive it would be laughable.
Perhaps that was what you were aiming for 🤷‍♀️

Good article, Casdon

RIP for those who died.

BevSec Sun 15-Sept-24 10:04:54

Lisaangel10, please take no notice of petra’s post, your post was not unbelievably naive. You are allowed to post what you want to, and there is no need for nasty replies.

It’s an ongoing problem. We aren’t the only country that migrants die at sea trying to get to, and no government as yet has been able to stop it.The migrants are determined to try it and so it goes on.

Wyllow3 Sun 15-Sept-24 11:39:08

By comparison, huge numbers try to cross the Mediterranean.
(Greece, Italy, Spain)

From Italy alone, according to Statistica, "From January to December 2023, around 157,000 migrants arrived in Italy by sea"
Compares with the UK " In 2023 as a whole, 29,437 people came to the UK in small boats.

Thanks BevSec I read her post and thought it was nasty but thought maybe that’s the type of forum this is.

What I posted were facts. They’re allowed I assume?

eazybee Sun 15-Sept-24 12:24:37

The difference being that once migrants arrive in the UK they tend to stay put. Italy is a staging post for other countries.

Wyllow3 Sun 15-Sept-24 12:29:06

When you're looking at an O/P, the question always is, "whats the real point of the post".
In this case, it seems to be to demand why in 8/9 weeks Starmer hasn't made a difference to this internationally very intractable problem.

Is alluding to the tragic deaths in this context a humanitarian one, or used to make a political score? We probably all "read" this differently.

For some, yes, but

"Italy - Figures presented during the recent launch of the new “Statistical Dossier on Immigration” by the Italian National Office Against Racial Discrimination (UNAR) and the IDOS Study and Research Centre show

there are more than five million migrants currently residing in Italy

Germany is apparently saying no more after the recent stabbing in Solingen.

Petra is very rude and patronising to Lisangel10. Is this allowed? It would make me feel very uncomfortable as Lisangell0 states in my post about dealing with rude people.

Perhaps you should have explained what you meant by your last sentence Lisaangel10, because when you post sneery comments people are bound to respond in kind, and that is how that sentence came across.

BevSec Sun 15-Sept-24 13:42:28

I do not think the post was sneery, just an opinion about Starmer.

Allsorts Sun 15-Sept-24 13:46:59

Why don't the police stick a knife in the boats, rendering them unable to set off or perhaps thats too simple. Why doesn't everyone here carry an id card? If they don't want to carry one, no job, schooling or housing as they do not exist. We could help them with their air fare to their country of choice. It could be sorted very quickly.

Wyllow3 Sun 15-Sept-24 14:02:15

The number of people drowned is a fact.

The sentence about Starmer is an opinion. Now, if you agree with the O/P then you'll not find a problem with the words, or the tone of that opinion.

But if you don't agree then you'll contest the opinion and the tone of it, and I found the tone as pretty strong mocking of someone I respect.

But we do have a choice how we express our POV, and there is always the report button if you feel you have been personally attacked.

Not right to use people dying in the channel for political point scoring. Imo. Not good.

Wyllow3 Sun 15-Sept-24 14:15:56

I felt uncomfortable about that too, but thought I must be the only one.

BevSec Sun 15-Sept-24 14:51:32

Wyllow3, .i respected Boris Johnson but had to read such deeply offensive posts about him which I didnt agree with. You cannot stop people posting whatever they wish.

I went to a local market to do some shopping this morning and, to be honest it was on my mind the whole time niggling away at me sad.

That’s not the point though, Lisaangel10 posted an opinion, which of course she is entitled to do, but then passed it off as a fact. That’s what people are querying.
