Hezbollah Exploding Pagers!

9 dead (so far) up to 3,000 Hezbollah operatives injured across Lebanon and Syria.

Apparently the pagers were manufactured in TaiWan and packed with explosives. The Taiwanese producers are vehemently denying this.

Israeli Government is being rather quiet, no statement so far. Hezbollah have said that there will be serious repercussions

It is like a plot from a Johnny English film…

In my first paragraph I should have added "every act that is blatantly unfair to a section of the population" to the causes of resentments that give rise to retaliations that cause yet more resentment.

Elegran Fri 20-Sept-24 13:52:40

Every act of terrorism, and every act of retaliation, cause new resentments which themselves are causes for yet more retaliation for the retaliation. Memories are long.

To succeed, ceasefires negotiations and agreements have to wipe out the past and move forward with compromises. Both sides have to give something so as to receive something. I can see no hope currently of that happening, only the prospect of mutual destruction of the properties and the populations of both Palestine and Israel. The minds of those who survive in both communities will be further poisoned against one another into future generations.

The killing might stop, but would it stop the expansion of Israel into Gaza and the West Bank as permanent occupied territories? Which has been a major trigger point since 1967?

Long, complicated and very sad history, because of course Jewish people deserve a homeland/State and were granted one by the Brits in 1948, but the Palestinians were left stateless

If someone said that they wanted to annihilate you Monica what might be a possible strategy for negotiation?

Both sides in the Israel/Palestine conflict want to to eliminate the other. That sounds like a basis for equal negotiation.

Where have you seen that Israel wants to kill all Palestinians, that’s a lie.
Israelis want to live without to be attacked by terrorists, if the attacks on Israel stop the killing would stop.

There have always been Zionists who have promoted the same phrase in one way or another "from the river to the sea", it long pre-dates last October.

The founding charter of Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party includes "Between the sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty.”

History of this in wiki
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_the_river_to_the_sea#:~:text=An%20early%20Zionist%20slogan%20envisaged,been%20used%20by%20Israeli%20politicians.

Although the phrase is linked to Palestine demands in terms of slogans, but there are current Israeli politicians like Bezalel Smotrich who want Israeli control of the whole area.

I do emphasis - certain politicians only as I don't conflate them with what the people of Israel themselves want.

Oreo Fri 20-Sept-24 12:15:33

I can’t let that pass Elegran as it may be the position now but wasn’t before the massacre of Jews last October by hamas.Israel was keeping an eye on the situation in Gaza but let them be and certainly didn’t want to eliminate them all.
It isn’t equal now, as Israel have the upper hand there.

Terrorism breeds terrorism. The Hamas and Hezbollah have used terrorism and this is Israel using terrorism. The Israel Arab problem will never be solved by killing people. Their escalation of terrorism puts us all in more danger. We need to speak out against terrorism no matter which side is using it.

Wyllow3 Fri 20-Sept-24 10:47:14

A problem with applauding this new tactic - personal exploding devices - it that (given some time) could be used by terrorists to target general populations - as retaliatory.

As I said that 'empathy' will get us all killed.

Escalating war and terrorism will get us all killed in the end.

No, the winners will be those with the most bombs and bullets, terrorism will only succeed where the population don’t fight back and protect themselves.

There will be no winners.

Hamas hasn't benefitted Palestinians. I never said it did. Yes, Hamas is now a dictatorship, but I have seen no evidence that were there another free election the results would be any different.

I do not favour either side, nor do I consider either side more sinned against than sinning. If they wanted a solution, they could sit down and negotiate and could have done that decades ago, but both sides are equally intransigent and equally determined to be top dog and do not care a toss how many people on the other side, - and their own die in the process..

As I say frequently ' A plague on both their houses'

There will be no free elections until Hamas leave Gaza, if they are allowed to win the whole of the Middle East will become Islamic States in the style of Iran.

This war is not about Gaza it’s about extremism if Hamas win neighbouring states will fall one by one.

Both sides in this conflict have democratically elected governments. The inhabotants of Gaza voted for Hamas. israeli's for Netanyahu and other right wing parties. Obviously there were people who disagreed with their respective governments.

But you cannot talk of 'innocent' civilians on either side while they continue to vote for political groups who act in ways that feed and practice violence.

Come on Monica that’s a gross distortion

Hamas did win one election promising a better Gaza, then set about murdering the opposition, Gaza is now a dictatorship, nobody dare speak out against Hamas.

Maybe you can explain how Hamas has benefited Palestinians.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 19-Sept-24 21:37:58

Last night, Israel’s defence minister, Yoav Gallant, announced the opening of “a new phase in the war” and hinted that resources and forces would be diverted from Gaza towards a new “centre of gravity” in the north.

Lebanon, scarred by decades of turbulence and whose people love and loathe Hezbollah with equal intensity, is bracing itself for the worst.

Terrorism will continue to spread until there is a just settlement surely? But not in our lifetime?

There is no such thing as a “just” settlement only one that is respected by the majority, minorities will always have grievances.

Petra, Netanyahu doesn’t want to talk. He’s an evil despot with not an ounce of compassion. And if you have to use the word heathen (who are you to decide which God is the right one,) at least spell it correctly.
paddyann54, agree entirely with your considered and factual post. I read the same thing about Balfour yesterday.

If Netanyahu doesn’t want to talk how did Israel negotiate the release of 112 prisoners 🤷‍♀️

GrannyGravy13 Thu 19-Sept-24 13:40:08

Grantanow Thu 19-Sept-24 13:39:27

Although there have been some civilian deaths (which Hezbollah are quick to publicise) almost all of those attacked by pager and walkie talkie explosions were supporters or terrorists with whom I have no sympathy given the massacre last October.
