In the UK there are 12 million who receive state pension, most who can afford to do without the heating allowance. For those on the margins, of course, more should get WFA, but this is just a plucked out the air figure propaganda for a typical "shock horror O/P.
So I ask again, where is the reference for this figure of 10 million out of a total of 12 million?
I believe that it’s true that a fair number of pensioners have very adequate monthly incomes. I also believe that a significant number of pensioners will struggle without improved access to pension credit. I had hoped that any responsible government could provide better for this particular in between group. But so far there appears to be very little understanding. Time for change.
Yes, I was wondering this too. I am just over the threshold for pension credit but have no intention of freezing to death during this or any winter. I am looking forward to an increase in my state pension though, which makes much more sense.

There will not be 10 million fozen pensioners. Those on pension credit will still receive the WFA.
In 2023 the median income for pensioner households (the value where half of all pensioners had an income less than that figure and half more was nearly £28,000. ifs.org.uk/publications/how-have-pensioner-incomes-and-poverty-changed-recent-years Suggests that at least half of pensioner households will manage very well without the WFA and probable any pensioner household with an income abov £25,000 will also manage.
So I quite agree there will be several million pensioners struggling with fuel bills this winter, and this must be a concern, but a significant number, 5 million plus, will not.
Unless the threshold is lifted for PC significantly then lots of pensioners will be worried about energy bills and not wanting to have heating on for long. Why oh why have Labour dug themselves into this hole?!
I'm not claiming that I won't notice the loss of WFA because I'd budgeted to receive it, so am having to make changes elsewhere. However, I am just above the level for receiving Pension Credit (after housing costs) and I most certainly won't be freezing. As ever, I'll have to be frugal, but I'll manage. IMO the idea that 10 million will be freezing is a gross exaggeration.
Well we know it’s not to save much money because much money will not be saved. No other group has been singled out to contribute towards filling the black hole. Why have pensioners been singled out? Because traditionally pensioners vote Conservative. Punishment. For keeping the Conservatives in and Labour out for so many years. There can be no other explanation for hitting such a soft target.
growstuff Sorry to hear you’ll be struggling. Are you not able to claim your teacher’s pension in addition to your state pension? Maybe you’re not old enough yet to claim both.
Yes maddyfour I claim Teachers Pension plus state pension, but I also have to pay £850 a month rent. I am £13 a week over the threshold for Pension Credit.

I thought that some pensions, such as for teachers could be drawn down early?
Many people I know donated their WFA to charity. My neighbour gave hers to RNLI. They will be £200 down this year from just one person. Many charities are already struggling. They will miss this income.
As I have just posted on another thread, most single female pensioners are not well off, although above Pension Credit level. The Government website shows that single female pensioners' average weekly income last year was £267, equal to under £14,000 per year. We will not freeze, but many of us will dip into savings or cut other things to keep moderately warm.

Exactly! However, the WFA is only a fraction of total income. It won't make the difference between having adequate heating and freezing.
