It’s good to know some background history but in the end we are where we are, and governments back in the day could only go on what information they had at the time, hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Just to add, it was really the ultra religious clerics and their supporters who instigated an uprising against the Shah, it was a great time especially for women then in Iran who could wear Western style clothes and make up and could go about freely.

Contrast the lives of the female population of ancient Iran and modern Persia with that of present-day Iran and tell me that is an improvement as far as half the population is concerned.

with the latest news today I would say that there is no chance of Netanyahu doing anything to de-escalate a war.. and that the chances are very high of this becoming a much more widespread war involving other countries.. He certainly isn't listening to advise from the USA.. and I hope UK about trying to find a peace agreement..

After watching the BBC 2 documentary last night about the Hamas slaughter of innocent young people at a Music Festival I fail to see how anyone can not be horrified. Young people hunted down and shot like animals, with the terrorists clearly enjoying what they were doing. One young woman was seen in the back of a pick up truck , naked held down by 4 or 5 men while others spat on her, it's not hard to imagine what fate awaited her. Where were all the anti Hamas protests after this unprovoked attack. This is not war it is mass murder carried out by uncivilised maniacs.

I’m more concerned about Ukraine with a maniac like Putin in Russia, that is more likely to affect us. I am worried about NATO getting involved directly or a nuclear escalation. Ukraine has a small population and will run out of manpower in a long protracted conflict, Russia will not. If NATO is seen to attack directly a great deal of damage to our infrastructure is easy for Russia to do.

If Iran gets involved directly the Gulf will close to shipping, cutting off oil supplies but that will hurt Iran itself badly, so I don’t think they will get involved, they are happy at the level of chaos they are causing now from a distance. The US will do what is needed to prevent Israel being overrun, then it will all calm down until the next time, but no solution for Palestinians.

I know that’s a very cynical view, it’s what happened in the past and will happen again.

The entire time I have been alive the Middle Eastern countries have fought. They always have done, they always will do. Their hostilities are unsolvable while there is so much hatred between them.

The best thing the West can do is not get involved apart from the diplomatic efforts.

I am genuinely baffled how certain sections of society has evolved into supporting terrorists.

These groups hate Jews and israel. Totally. The children are taught this when still in school.

They also hate the West. So I'd be more concerned about this. So many horrendous terrorist attacks in the West. I've yet to read about an attack carried out by Jewish terrorists. No such thing.

On October 7th, Hamas did what it did. Would we be OK if terrorists attacked and killed 300 youngsters at Glastonbury? Pretty sure we wouldn't and would expect our government to defend us.

Hezbollah are heavily implicated in so many atrocities.

I watched a video that hasn't made msm and who's surprised. It concerns Alya , a 20 year old Syrian who was taken as a sex slave by Hezbollah. Harrowing stuff.

I have no time for Netanyahu but Israel must survive and that means Hamas and Hezbollah must be destroyed because their goal is the destruction of Israel. Iran is a problem for the world: a fanatic religious state cannot be permitted nuclear weapons.

I watched this documentary too nellflanders and it was absolutely horrifying (it actually deserves a thread of it’s own, I may start one) and I’m afraid this terrible attack is pushed to one side all too often. Hamas and Hezbollah are the aggressors in my opinion.

I agree with David1949 and Cabowich although DH said very many years ago that area could be the catalyst for WW3.
The Midde East has always been a tinder box.

However, many people seem to have forgotten what happened after WW2 in Europe.

Why is now the time to draw the line? Israel wasn't prepared to draw the line in the 1940s and say "let's just carry on as we are." Great to draw the line when you have got the line just where it suits you. Funnily enough where the line is now doesn't suit the Palestinians and is Israel prepared to draw the line now and stop Palestinians losing their homes on the West Bank?

Replying to Lizziedrip: Should Israel not be able to defend herself then? All I see on the news is Israeli bombings - never the effects of the hundreds of rockets fired by Hezbollah into Israel. Western media is so anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic it is beyond unreal. The planting of explosives in pagers and mobiles was a master stroke by Israel - why should Hezbollah (under the direction of Iran) just be allowed to continue to bomb and kill Israelis? Have you no compassion for the victims of the aggression of Hamas and Hezbollah? Why is it always the fault of Israel?

The key to peace in the Middle East is Iran, they fund and indoctrinate all the terrorist organizations, the only way we are going to have peace is regime came in Iran, that is not likely.

Their aim is Islamic fundamentalist rule of the whole region, expanding into Africa and anywhere else they can, they don’t want or need a major war the extremist groups will do the fighting for them. Deaths don’t matter to them, they are all martyrs to the cause, that have been indoctrinated they will enter paradise.

Currently they are supplying weapons to Russia to use in Ukraine, I worry about the technology Iran is getting in return.

Yes I agree David the key is Iran.. whilst they continue to back Hezbollah we will have 5 million Lebanese and 1.5 Syrian refugees with no way of escape except by sea and which country will take them in.. nowhere I suspect... another tragedy waiting to happen..

Everything is in the hands of Hamas they could admit defeat today, their only weapon is propaganda and they don’t care how many civilians suffer and die.

We are already over involved in foreign wars with bloody Ukraine and their whinging for more and more weapons. We need to keep well out of this and let the various parties fight it out. We are no longer a colonial power.

If international efforts fail to stop the slaughter and more and more people flee the region biglouis where do you think they are going to go? Like it or not, we are all affected by what happens in the wider world and have to take part in it.
